St Brendan's AC win ‘Athletics for All' shield at third annual juvenile triangular match
The Tri 'Athletics For All' Shield was won by host club St Brendan's AC for the second year in a row, but only after a monumental battle with Iveragh AC (who won the shield in 2023) who were close runners-up, and Tralee Harriers close behind in third.
Organiser David Butler of St Brendan's said the turn-out and the success of the project would greatly benefit the young athletes in the busy track and field season ahead and thanked the officials from the three clubs who had made the event a big hit with the juvenile athletes.
The triangular match has revived the old tradition of athletics matches that were popular in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s.
Streets of Killarney 5 Mile Run
The Killarney Valley AC-promoted Streets of Killarney 5-Mile Run was a massive success on Good Friday evening, despite the downpour in advance. There were 690 finishers and the men's winner was Paul Moloney of Mallow AC in a time of 24:59, with Kenneth Rogers of St John's AC in 2nd and Gavin Sweeney of Togher AC in 3rd.
Leading the Kerry runners home was the promoting club's Conor Kissane in 25:29.
The women's winner was Amy Pollman-Daamen of Ríocht AC in a time of 29:19, with last year's winner Carol Finn of Leevale AC in 2nd and the ever-improving Lily Riordan of Star of the Laune in 3rd. Niamh O'Sullivan (Ríocht AC) won the F60 in 32:33.
Athletics Ireland Congress
The Athletics Ireland national congress will be held in the Tullamore Court Hotel on this Saturday, April 26, from 10.30am. Kerry Athletics will be represented by Brendan Cullen (county treasurer) and Orla Fitzgerald (county admin secretary).
