Tirupati MLA lauds services of Reach Global Foundation

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Global Reach Foundation, Tirupati MLA Arani Srinivasulu lauded the humanitarian services of the NGO to the victims of the recent cyclone in Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. He praised its founder-chairman Ramesh Nath Lingutla for undertaking the service programmes. Film lyricist Suddala Ashok Teja, District Collector S. Venkateswar, TTD member Bhanu Prakash Reddy, TUDA chairman C. Divakar Reddy and other dignitaries also participated in the anniversary celebrations in Tirupati on Sunday. They lauded Dr. Ramesh Nath, who left his comfortable life in London and returned to his homeland to do his bit for the people. Appealing to everyone to help the poor under the P4 (Public, Private, People Partnership) programme, Dr. S. Venkateswar announced that he has adopted five families from Nakkala Colony. He urged the rich to adopt a family or a village here. He said that SST (Srinivasan Services Trust), the social arm of TVS Motor Company, has adopted 60 villages in the district. 'Our district is fortunate to have 131 mega industries. The industrialists were also been requested to do so. They are adopting some of the communities in their surrounding villages. Everyone should help the poor through the P4 programme. There are over 83,000 Bangaru Kutumbalu (golden families) in our district. So far, we have been able to tag only 5,000 people.'

Uncertainty dogs mango business in erstwhile Chittoor district of A.P.

Notwithstanding the support price of ₹4 a kg, announced by the State government for the Totapuri mango growers, the situation in the mango-rich combined Chittoor district has not witnessed much improvement. While many of the fruit pulp units still remain closed due to lack of encouraging response in the international market, those that opened their gates to the fruit vendors are also worried about the consequences of accepting more stock than needed, fearing if they would be biting more than their ability to chew. The district bifurcation of 2022 has left Tirupati with fewer fruit processing units, with a chunk of them having gone to Chittoor district. As a result, the Tirupati mango growers are also going towards Gangadhara Nellore and Puthalapattu in the neighbouring district. Meanwhile, several farmers who resorted to panic harvesting, much against the government's advice to wait, have dumped their yield in the vicinity of fruit pulp units or near the mandis due to lack of remunerative price. In view of the spurt in supply and the resultant fall in price, and factories expressing reluctance to procure the fruits led to increased waiting time for the trucks and tractors, which means an additional rent burden for the farmers. When the procurement price hovers between ₹3 and ₹4 a kg and not the ₹8 promised by the government, the farmers are forced to dump the yield to at least avoid incurring additional expenditure. Minister for Agriculture K. Atchannaidu visited the Damalacheruvu market in Pakala mandal recently to infuse confidence among the farmers, but to no avail. Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateswar and Joint Collector Shubham Bansal, with the horticultural officials in tow, have been visiting the factories, mandis and the ramps, the three major procurement points, to ensure that the farmers are not taken for a ride. Hover, the price has not seen an encouraging rise. With the change in season likely to bring in gusty winds in a fortnight, the farmers who are yet to harvest Totapuri by paying heed to the government's advice, are worried over the possibility of the fruit withering.

Totapuri mango farmers fear produce will wither soon if not procured

The woes of mango farmers especially the Totapuri variety keep increasing with no solution in sight. The fruits are ripe and ready for harvest, but with scores of fruit pulp making units across Tirupati and Chittoor districts reluctant for procurement, owing to stock piled up over the last two years, the fruit is likely to wither any moment. Totapuri (locally called 'Bengalura') variety is grown on 50,000 hectares in the undivided Chittoor district and the yield is pegged at a whopping six lakh tonnes this year. At a joint meeting held with mango pulp unit representatives, farmer leaders and 'Mandi' owners recently, district Collectors Sumit Kumar (Chittoor) and S. Venkateswar (Tirupati) announced procurement of mangoes from farmers at ₹12 per kg. After the factories sounded an alarm, the government chipped in with a support price of ₹4/kg, requiring the factories to pay ₹8/kg. The farmers usually dispose the produce by directly supplying to the factories, to the nearest Mandi, at the ramps (one-stop purchase points where the produce is loaded directly into waiting trucks), and at the nearest Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), who, in turn supply to the factories. The government had deployed officials at the factories, ramps, FPOs and Mandis to take details of the farmers and the quantum of supply. Despite such foolproof measures, the factories have reportedly insisted on a quick-fix solution to the piled up pulp before throwing their gates open to the incoming produce. The agitated farmers on Wednesday (June 11) had staged a protest over the district machinery's inability to implement its orders on mango procurement at Damalacheruvu junction on Chittoor-Kurnool national highway. Meanwhile, some factories had partially opened their gates to purchase mangoes, but at a paltry ₹5 per kg and not the mandatory ₹8/kg. 'At ₹5, we will not get even the cost incurred towards harvesting and transporting the yield to the factories', rued a farmer Goduguchinta Ravindra. While there are ramps that load fruits into waiting trucks bound to northern States, there is lack of clarity on how to secure the farmer's (beneficiary) details and account for this supply. 'If we are paid for supplying to ramps, much stock will be cleared in no time', says B. Dhananjaya Naidu, a mango supplier for three decades.

'In order to sustain the annual growth rate exceeding 15% and achieving $2.4-trillion economy, as mandated under Swarna Andhra@2047, the Chief Minister has reiterated the need for establishment of at least one MSME Park in each constituency for extending infrastructural support by developing plug and play facilities, approach road and power, which would reduce the initial capital costs,' he added. Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateswar said, 'At present, the growth in Tirupati is 18% and there are more than 15,000 MSMEs in the district generating 2.5 lakh employment which is more than the large industries in the district.' S. Narendra Kumar, vice-chairman, CII Andhra Pradesh, said, 'India must create 7.85 million non-farm sector jobs annually by 2030. Microenterprises, being the engine of job growth in dynamic economies, are vital to meeting this challenge. A.P.'s focus on mass entrepreneurship is aligned with national employment goals.' CII project 'The project titled 'Abhivruddhi Patham Lo Swarna Andhra Pradesh' (A new journey towards development) is the first major step by the CII as a part of its Centre of Excellence on Employment and Livelihood (CEL). This has been officially launched with the support from the State government and Volvo Group Trust,' he informed.
