S.W.A.T. Season 9: Renewal status, release date speculation and everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on July 18, 2025, 20:30 IST Last updated July 18, 2025, 20:04 IST If you're a fan of S.W.A.T., the CBS cop drama starring Shemar Moore as the tough-but-fair Sergeant Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson, you're probably wondering what's next after the wild ride of Season 8. The show's been a rollercoaster, dodging cancellations before, but the latest news has fans on edge. So, is S.W.A.T. coming back for Season 9? Here's everything we know so far. Renewal Status: Is S.W.A.T. Season 9 Happening? Right now, S.W.A.T. is not renewed for a ninth season. CBS pulled the plug in March 2025, marking the show's third cancellation since it started in 2017. Yep, third. This show's been through more breakups and makeups than a soap opera couple. Back in 2023, after Season 6, CBS canceled it, only for fans and Shemar Moore to rally hard enough to bring it back for Season 7. Then, in April 2024, CBS gave it a Season 8 greenlight, calling it the 'final season.' But when the axe fell again this year, it stung. There's still a sliver of hope, though. Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind S.W.A.T. , is actively shopping the show to other networks and streaming platforms. Shemar Moore took to Instagram in March, practically begging Netflix or someone else to pick it up, saying, 'We've got stories left to tell, and fans who deserve more.' A petition to save the show has racked up about 80,000 signatures, showing the fanbase isn't giving up. But as of now, no one's stepped up to save the day. No Netflix, no Paramount+, no anybody. Still, the fact that Sony's trying keeps the door cracked open. When Could S.W.A.T. Season 9 Come Out? Since there's no renewal, there's no official release date for Season 9. But let's play the guessing game. If, say, Netflix or another platform swoops in by late 2025, production would need time to ramp up. S.W.A.T. usually premiered in the fall—October or November—for most of its run, with Season 8 hitting screens on October 18, 2024. Filming a season typically takes 6-8 months, plus a few months for pre- and post-production. So, if a miracle happens and Season 9 gets greenlit soon, we're looking at a release in fall 2026, maybe September or October. If a streamer like Netflix picks it up, they might go for a shorter season (10-13 episodes instead of 22), which could speed things up to, say, summer 2026. But this is all just me crunching numbers based on how TV works—no promises, since nothing's confirmed. S.W.A.T. Season 9 Expected Cast If S.W.A.T. gets a ninth season, we'd expect the Season 8 crew to return, assuming they're available. That includes: Shemar Moore as Hondo Harrelson, the heart and soul of the show. as Hondo Harrelson, the heart and soul of the show. Jay Harrington as Deacon Kay, the veteran with a big heart. as Deacon Kay, the veteran with a big heart. David Lim as Victor Tan, the team's sharpshooter. as Victor Tan, the team's sharpshooter. Anna Enger Ritch as Zoe Powell, the tough-as-nails officer. as Zoe Powell, the tough-as-nails officer. Niko Pepaj as Miguel 'Miko' Alfaro, the newer recruit. as Miguel 'Miko' Alfaro, the newer recruit. Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Hicks, the boss. as Commander Hicks, the boss. Annie Ilonzeh as Devin Gamble, the team's latest addition. What Would Season 9 Be About? The Season 8 finale, 'Return to Base,' aired on May 16, 2025, and left us hanging. Without spoiling too much, the two-parter had Hondo, Victor Tan, and Zoe Powell dealing with a crew of Russian mercenaries wreaking havoc in L.A. with hidden bombs. The episode ended with a big 'uh-oh' moment—a target on our heroes' backs they don't even know about. If Season 9 happens, it'd probably kick off resolving that mess, with the 20-Squad facing new threats and personal drama. The show's always mixed gritty action with real-world issues like racism, loyalty, and family, so expect more of that. Annie Ilonzeh, who plays Devin Gamble, teased in an interview that there are 'tons of stories left to explore' for the team. Maybe we'd see Hondo grappling with leadership challenges or Tan and Powell's arcs getting deeper. The writers have never been shy about throwing curveballs, so who knows what else they'd cook up? [Kim Seong-kon] S.W.A.T.: 'South Korean Weapons and Tactics'
Whenever I want to relax these days, I turn on the TV and watch a Netflix series titled "S.W.A.T." In its depiction of daily incidents in urban LA, the drama makes me brood over our turbulent past, ponder our present predicaments and reflect on the future awaiting our children's generation. The protagonist Hondo, a SWAT unit leader in LA, constantly wonders: 'Is it possible for me to bring change to the world in which I live? Can I make a better society by risking my life fighting vicious villains? Can I really change the system?' He agonizes over what kind of tactics he must adopt to make a better police department and a better world. SWAT stands for 'Special Weapons and Tactics' used to fight crime in our town, city and country. The drama "S.W.A.T." has caught my attention because each episode deals with various problems in LA, a city of the American Dream for immigrants, diverse ethnic minorities and multicultural neighborhoods. LA is also well known for its freeway, where you can enjoy 'this illusion of speed, freedom, wind in your hair, unreeling landscape,' as Thomas Pynchon described in his celebrated novel, 'The Crying of Lot 49.' In fact, Pynchon perceived that the LA freeway resembled the veins that nourish America, and if someone were to inject a hypodermic needle somewhere in them, Americans would experience hallucinations, hypnosis and paralysis. When it comes to LA, people might also think of the police brutality during the arrest of Rodney King in 1991 and the ensuing riots in 1992, which ignited racist disputes in the so-called 'City of Angels.' The Rodney King incident has consequently evoked a fundamental distrust between minorities and the LA police. In addition, LA suffers from a range of crimes, as do other big American cities. Furthermore, in the series, LA is an emblem of America and ultimately a microcosm of the contemporary world in which we now live. The first episode of the drama begins with the fatal mistake of a white SWAT unit leader. While pursuing a white male suspect, he accidentally shoots and wounds a young Black bystander. Naturally, the African American community is enraged and protests strongly against the police. As a result, the SWAT leader resigns from the police force. The authorities then decide to appoint a Black sergeant, Hondo, as the new leader of the SWAT unit in an effort to save face and pacify the anger of the African American community. In the process, they bypass Sgt. Deacon, the white officer who was initially the successor to the leader who resigned. Thus, the first episode evokes the issue of DEI. DEI, which stands for 'Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,' has become controversial in the US, where conservatives question its validity. However, Hondo exhibits strong leadership qualities, extraordinary competence and an admirable personality, apparently justifying DEI. The issues and problems that 'S.W.A.T.' is dealing with are uniquely American, but at the same time, they are universal. They include racism, prejudice, white supremacy, nationalism, drug smuggling, human trafficking and issues within LGBTQ+ communities. The TV show also highlights instances of 'Robin Hood' crime, in which people steal from the rich to give to the poor. Just as LA and America are depicted in the drama, South Korea is also now suffering from many accumulated internal problems and serious external crises. For example, putting an end to the polarity and division of our society is urgent, and so is overcoming antagonism, hate and hostility among our politicians. While investigating hate crimes against other races, SWAT officer Chris asks Hondo, 'Where do you think this comes from? All the hate?' Hondo replies, 'I don't know, Chris. For some people, it's just the easiest way to feel, and it's infectious.' Our current moment of political populism also stirs hate and impetuousness. Getting over that is therefore imperative to make our society better. Meanwhile, we must find or invent our own 'special weapons and tactics' to properly and swiftly cope with the international crises lurking in our path. One of the SWAT rules is 'Only move as fast as you can shoot and never lose your control.' We must keep this in mind when we deal with national or international emergencies. In addition, instead of short-term solutions, we must pursue and come up with long-term solutions. Indeed, as Hondo says, 'Sometimes a short-term solution just creates a long-term problem.' While watching "S.W.A.T.," it occurs to me that we, too, urgently need a quick-reacting 'South Korean Weapons and Tactics' task force to effectively deal with the problems we now face, both internal and external. We must have the best weapons and superb tactics to survive the current crises and thrive in the years to come.

Canceled TV shows in 2025
(NewsNation) — 2025 has been a huge year for TV, especially with hit shows like 'Severance' and 'The White Lotus' releasing new series. But some fans have faced bad news as their favorites have been canceled. Shows like 'The Sex Lives of College Girls' and 'S.W.A.T.' had their last seasons recently, as both weren't renewed this year. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said, 'We have to be fiscally responsible,' when talking about shows that have been canceled. Todd Chrisley shares first social media message since Trump pardon 'It's not easy to end shows, and we had a lot of options this year,' Reisenbach said, according to Deadline. 'The schedule is really full, and so we always have to look at all of our shows, look at the aggregate information, the creative of where they are in their life cycle, what the finances look like, what the ratings are, and then we make those tough decisions.' Here are some of the TV shows that have been canceled this year. Despite 'Suits' doing extremely well, its spin-off, 'Suits LA,' has been canceled after only one season, according to multiple sources. The NBC drama 'Found' has also been canceled after two seasons. NBC has also canceled two sitcoms: 'Lopez vs. Lopez' and 'Night Court.' CBS has canceled 'The Equalizer' after five seasons, as well as 'Poppa's House' and 'The Summit.' Amazon Prime also canceled two 'Citadel' spinoffs, after one season of each series. Instead, the storylines of each spinoff will be put into the second season of 'Citadel.' CBS also canceled several popular TV shows, including 'FBI: International' and 'FBI: Most Wanted.' Then, FX canceled 'The Old Man' after two seasons, reportedly due to a delayed production schedule. Other canceled TV shows include: 'Laid' 'The Wheel of Time' 'On Call' 'The Irrational' 'Acapulco' 'Frasier' 'The Cube' 'Wipeout' reboot Brad Pitt hasn't cut off kids, set for more attacks ahead of F1 movie: Exclusive Some shows aren't being canceled but are ending in 2025, including 'The Sandman,' 'The Summer I Turned Pretty,' 'Andor' and 'Harlem.' Create Account After S.W.A.T. ended its eight-season run last month, CBS announced it was moving forward on S.W.A.T. Exiles with Moore returning as Sgt. Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson. S.W.A.T. had one of the most devoted fanbases in all of television. CBS twice dropped the show, only to bring it back after an outcry from its devoted viewers. After it was cancelled for good back in March, Moore appealed to Netflix to give the show a new lease on life. 'Let me just remind you that in a very short period of time, once upon a time ago …it only took us about two weeks to go from number 15 … to number one,' Moore said on Instagram. 'And then we stayed in your top 10, top 15 for about six months, nine months, maybe a year. So Netflix, if you're interested in a show that is on autopilot that the world is watching, we'd love to come play. NBC, Fox, ABC, hey, you want to come flirt with me? You're invited to the barbecue. Pick your favourite restaurant. I will pay the bill.' Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. The streamer didn't bite, but CBS execs gave a green light to Exiles with Moore the only returning star. Moore, 55, celebrated the news with a lengthy Instagram video telling his followers he was 'excited and grateful' for their support. But he also rankled some fans of the show by calling himself the 'Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.' 'Y'all paid attention. Y'all tuned in. You rallied for us eight years,' he said. 'We won, and without those eight years, there is no future of S.W.A.T. , and there is a future for S.W.A.T. , and it's called S.W.A.T. Exiles . So, we start shooting this summer. I'm not saying I'm Tom Brady, but I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T. — that's not arrogant, that's not ego, it's the fact. I'm the quarterback. I'm Shemar Moore, aka Hondo.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Shemar Moore of the CBS series S.W.A.T. Photo by Smallz + Raskind / SONY He continued: 'Tom Brady might be the quarterback, but you know, people get traded. Tight ends get traded. The running back gets traded, the receivers get traded but the teams keep pushing with their quarterback and I'm that guy, so proud so grateful, not gonna apologize for nothing. Busted my ass for 31 years to do what I do, and excited for the future.' Of course, Moore's comments ruffled some feathers with his co-stars. Jay Harrington, who played Sgt. David 'Deacon' Kay on the series, said that he learned of the spinoff after getting a text from Moore. 'It was the day before. Shemar reached out to to all of us to say, 'This is what's going on…,' and, you know, there's talk that they'll reach out to us about stuff,' Harrington told TVLine this week . 'He wanted to be the one to tell us, and say 'your reps will find out shortly.' That's when I told my reps, and they had no idea.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Harrington said Moore invited him to give him a call and he told the website he sent the actor a text. 'I texted him later and said, 'I'm sure you did your best.' We've been brothers for years, so that doesn't change.' But Harrington said he has moved on and called his exclusion part of ' show business.' ' I've been in this business for a long time. You don't get 'owed' things just because you put in your time. … if there was any disappointment, it's that when they announced it, we weren't mentioned at all. That was it. And it was short-lived because I thought, 'I'm not going to let that take away from what I know in my heart is eight years of putting in some great work,'' he said. Shemar Moore and Jay Harrington in a scene from 'S.W.A.T.' Photo by CBS Fellow co-star David Lim, who played Victor Tan, also sounded off on the spinoff. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'I'd be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn't sting,' he wrote in an Instagram post. 'It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could've been a moment of reflection and recognition — for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.' Lim also said that the cast 'fought' to get S.W.A.T. renewed for ninth season saying everyone involved 'believed we still had more to give, more stories to tell.' 'We wanted it for our crew, for each other, and for the newer faces just joining us. It wasn't in the cards for all of us—and that's okay,' he wrote. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. In an interview with Variety , Sony Pictures Television president Katherine Pope said the door isn't completely closed on Moore's S.W.A.T. castmates joining him in the spinoff. 'It's a universe. There is a clear world that we're exploring here. We're a few weeks in. We're still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favourites to be a part of it in some way,' she said in an interview last month. According to Deadline, the new series will follow Hondo after he is drawn out of retirement to lead a S.W.A.T. unit made up of untested recruits. mdaniell@ Read More NHL Columnists Columnists Columnists Columnists
