Dermot Mulroney knows ‘The Hunting Wives' isn't his usual role: ‘Love affairs and naughty sex'

He's got his cowboy hat on. Dermot Mulroney may be best known for 'The Wedding Date' and 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' but his new Netflix show 'The Hunting Wives' is like 'the anti rom-com' — according to the actor. 'They don't have any romance, and they don't have any comedy….except love affairs and naughty sex,' Mulroney, 61, exclusively told The Post. Netflix Advertisement '[It] takes itself just seriously enough that you can find all sorts of ways to look at it,' he explained. 'You can see it as a serious drama, or you can take it a little lighter, or at least a little bit over-the-top right in their styles in their choices.' The soapy drama is based on the 2021 novel and follows Sophie (Brittany Snow), who moves with her husband, (Evan Jonigkeit), from Massachusetts to Texas. Sophie soon ends up entangled in the web of her new friend Margo Banks (Malin Akerman), the Queen Bee leader of the local community. Margo presides over a clique of moms and socialites who like shooting guns and dancing with men half their age. 5 Dermot Mulroney appears on 'The Jennifer Hudson Show' in Burbank, California, on April 1, 2025. Although Margo is having affairs with younger men and women alike – and Jed is also seeing other women – the couple knows about each other's activities, and neither of them has a problem with it. 'I'm running for governor of Texas, so we don't take that lightly, but I've got somebody who's kind of running me, and her name is Margo Banks,' the 'Scream VI' actor told The Post. 'We are definitely a power couple in the upper social echelon down there in the oil country in Texas.' 5 Malin Akerman and Britatny Snow in 'The Hunting Wives.' Netflix Advertisement 'The Wedding Date' actor called the novel a 'page turner.' 'I think they expanded Jed's role somewhat in the television series. Really, Jed is a man who makes his own decisions, but he is very much and perhaps toxically tied to his wife,' he explained. 'They share goals. So, they have that in common.' The 'Chicago Fire' actor quipped that although Jed and Margo's relationship isn't a typical romance, 'When you're lying to the police about what your wife is doing…that can be considered love.' 'The Hunting Wives' also stars Jaime Ray Newman, Katie Lowes, George Ferrier and Chrissy Metz. All eight episodes are available to stream.

Emma Watson banned from driving after being caught speeding

Actor Emma Watson, best known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, has received a six-month driving ban after she was caught speeding. Watson was caught driving 38 mph (61 km/h) in a 30 mph (48 km/h) zone in Oxford, England, on July 31 last year. She already had nine points on her licence at the time of the incident; 12 points warrants a ban. The 35-year-old, currently a student at the University of Oxford, was fined £1,044 ($1,918) at a hearing at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. She was not in attendance, according to the BBC. Mark Haslam, Watson's lawyer, told the court that she is a student and 'in a position to pay the fine,' the British outlet said. Watson has been studying for her master's degree in creative writing since 2023. After the last film came out in 2011, she went on to star in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring and Beauty and the Beast. Her last film role was in Greta Gerwig's 2019 version of Little Women, as Meg March, with Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern and Meryl Streep also starring. Watson and her brother Alex launched a sustainable gin brand called Renais in 2023. In a bizarre coincidence, Zoe Wannamaker, 76, who played Madame Hooch in the Harry Potter series, was also banned from driving this week in the same court and on the same day as Watson after she was caught speeding on a motorway in southern England in August last year. ‘Slow Horses' EP Doug Urbanski on the secret to the show's success: ‘We try to make the perfect martini' and what's next in Season 5: ‘it's the most fun and most silly'

You practically need to keep a portable defibrillator next to your remote when you stream Slow Horses. The Apple TV+ series, has more twists, near deaths (and sometimes, actual deaths), and other heart-stopping moments within a single episode than other series do over the span of an entire season. But it's the everyday travails of its characters that keep them close to the audiences' heart, says star Gary Oldman. 'The appeal of the show is that we give you the world of espionage, but these are people you can relate to more than the tuxedo-clad James Bond,' Oldman told Gold Derby at an FYC event for Slow Horses at the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Arts at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation on Saturday. More from GoldDerby Pickleball, punchlines, and personal growth: 'Hacks' stars Megan Stalter and Paul W. Downs on their bond and what's next 'That feeling of having a first crush': How Zach Cherry and Merritt Wever made their 'Severance' marriage feel real Joy and visibility take center stage at Critics Choice LGBTQ+ Cinema & TV celebration 'They've got their marriage problems, kid problems, they have to pay their mortgages, and go to the laundromat,' Oldman added. 'We see them do things that spies aren't normally seen doing.' Based on the Slough House novels by Mick Herron, the series, which is headed into its fifth season later this year, tells the stories of a group of disgraced British agents who try to bring down terrorists and other evil-doers under the supervision of Jackson Lamb, played by Oldman, who was joined at the event by the show's executive producer, Doug Urbanski, and cast members Rosalind Eleazar (Louisa Guy), Jonathan Pryce (David Cartwright), and Saskia Reeves (Catherine Standish). Speaking to the show's success, Goldman, a 2024 Primetime Emmy nominee Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for his role, said, 'There's two criteria — the scripts, which are based on Mick Herron's novels, and the gang — the cast and the crew. To work with this group of people has been a highlight, really, of my career.' Some of those everyday-people quirks on display include Lamb's notorious bodily functions like passing gas. 'Lamb uses the flatulence, the drinking, the smoking, the sort of gruffness, the sarcasm, the insults, the bullying — all of that — as somewhat spycraft,' Oldman said. 'He has gathered this persona to keep people at a distance. 'You're not going to get close to me. You're not going to second guess me.' But, because he really has no filter and doesn't abide to social norms, he doesn't care.' Despite the life and death situations and the high stakes in the espionage world, Slow Horses manages to work in some comedic moments into the lives of the agents. In Season 4, we saw Louisa fall under the mistaken impression that River had romantic feelings for her. In reality, he was just trying to find a way to talk to her about his ailing grandfather, David. 'Every time I watch that scene, I'm like 'Oh, my God, Louisa! Look at you trying to think that!'' Eleazar said with a laugh. 'But I love their dynamic. Afterwards I thought, 'Huh. Is there something between them?' Maybe it's explored in later seasons? I don't know.' An example of how the show keeps viewers guessing was in the first episode of Season 4, titled 'Identity Theft.' David shot an intruder whom the audience believed was his grandson. For most of the episode, nearly everyone believed that River was indeed dead only for it to be revealed that he was alive. David had shot a look-alike intruder, Bertrand Harkness (Jack Lowden), River's half-brother, who had murder on his mind. 'We try and have a cliffhanger, and two stories going on,' Urbanski said. 'We try to make the perfect martini and keep the formula going.' 'River's' death serves as a reminder that Slow Horses viewers should never believe anything until they see it with their own eyes. While Marcus (Kadiff Kirwan) died in the Season 4 finale, we didn't actually see his corpse on-screen, did we? Yes, the character dies in one of Herron's novels — but does that mean he's gone from the series? 'I don't believe we did see it,' Urbanski says about Marcus's corpse appearing on screen. 'That's a good question. No one comes back from the dead like a zombie [on Slow Horses], but I think one would be wise to question anything that is purported to be a death on the show. Sure.' Urbanski calls Season 5 'the most fun and the most silly season' that's been done to date. 'We called Season 1 The Bourne Identity season,' Urbanski says. 'It had that sort of energy. Season 2 was more like [the movie] Tinker Tailor Solider Spy [which Urbanski executive produced]. That was about bad guy Russians trying to kill Papa Cartwright and Jackson. Season 3 was the sort of the 'Hitchcock' and 'MacGuffin' season. They were all looking for the file. Then, in Season 4, the bad guys wanted to kill Papa Cartwright and Lamb again. 'Season 5,' Urbanski continues, 'is centered around [Roddy] Ho [played by Christopher Chung], who is sort of our least serious character.' (Watch for Ho to get a girlfriend.) 'You're going to find a shifting of gears in terms of tone for the first two or three episodes, and then, the last three episodes are actually quite cinematic,' Urbanski adds. 'You have quite a bit of fun with the chase that ensues.' The Handmaid's Tale's Ann Dowd, EPs on a Shaken Aunt Lydia as the Series Ends and Sequel The Testaments Begins: ‘She's Lost Her Way'

We've come a long way from the cattle prod. The most recent Handmaid's Tale episode found Aunt Lydia, the violent and staunch Gilead apologist played by Ann Dowd, sobbing on the floor as she beseeched God for help. What sent one of the series' scariest characters to her knees, you might wonder? A conversation with June that forced the older woman to come to terms with the reality of her role as a fixer for religious rape. (Read a full episode recap here.) More from TVLine Grey's Anatomy's Hot New Doc: Did Your First Impression Leave You Wanting Seconds? TVLine Asks: Would The Handmaid's Tale Weaponized Wedding Cake Have Worked on You? Say It Ain't So, Jo: Grey's Anatomy Wouldn't Really Make Link's Bride a Widow... Would It? The scene (which earned Dowd a Performer of the Week spot) was the season's most stark — though certainly not the first — reminder that Aunt Lydia has changed drastically over the course of the series. During a SAG-AFTRA Foundation panel I moderated earlier this year, Dowd offered some insight into her character's gradual change of heart. 'I think she's aging,' she said, noting that Lydia's day-to-day experience in Gilead and her relationship with the handmaids 'over time, it affects her. It changes her. It changes her health, her mental health, her physical health. It begins to show up.' Elisabeth Moss, series star/executive producer, chimed in. 'The vulnerability that I think Ann brings to this season, it's always been there, which is what has made Lydia so interesting and so complicated. But I do think… that there are not many actresses willing to go to the vulnerable, open place, the complicated place that she goes to this season, and I don't know of anyone else who could do it the way that she did it.' (Press PLAY on the video above to watch the complete conversation. The Aunt Lydia part starts around the 10:33 mark.) Hulu currently is in production on The Testaments, a Handmaid's sequel series based on Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel. The show will follow Lydia (played by Dowd, reprising her Handmaid's role), as well as two young women (played by Presumed Innocent's Chase Infiniti and newcomer Lucy Halliday) with complicated, intertwining stories. The Testaments: Everything We Know About The Handmaid's Tale Sequel Series View List 'A lot of the stuff that happens in Season 6 [of Handmaid's] is lighting a fuse for Lydia in The Testaments, who eventually comes to the idea that maybe the whole Gilead experiment needs to be washed out of the sheets,' says Bruce Miller, an executive producer on both series. As such, he adds, the events of Episode 6 are part of 'the radicalization of Lydia — but I don't think June's telling her anything she doesn't already know.' EP Warren Littlefield notes that 'Lydia has absolutely lost her way. We've [previously] seen her learn that Gilead is an imperfect place, but she's never rejected it.' He points out that Lydia's finding Janine working at Jezebel's earlier in the season was 'an awakening, for her, of how truly flawed it is.' He ends with a tease about the series' ending. 'The Lydia we're left with says things that we never would have heard from — you'll see in the final two episodes — words that Lydia never would have spoken. That's incredibly powerful, and it's part of how we end our journey.' streams new episodes Tuesdays on Hulu. The series finale is set for Tuesday, May 27.
