Teddy bear purportedly wrapped in human skin likely a prank
Investigators in San Bernardino County responded to reports of human remains spotted outside a convenience store and found a teddy bear purportedly wrapped in human skin, though it now appears that the ordeal is likely an elaborate prank. Officials with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed that deputies arrived at an AMPM store in Victorville, located in the 1300 block of Bear Valley Road, at around 12:05 p.m. 'A coroner investigator has taken possession of the object, and the investigation is continuing,' SBCSD Public Information Officer Mara Rodriguez said. In footage of the scene obtained by KTLA, sheriff's deputies had cordoned off the store's parking lot, while the coroner's investigator inspected the teddy bear, which could be seen just outside the entrance of the AMPM. The gloved coroner was seen gently turning the object around while examining it, and then placing the teddy bear-shaped object into a pink plastic bag. It's unclear whether investigators requested footage from the store's surveillance cameras to determine how and when the item was placed or left there. In a post on a Facebook page called Dark Seed Creations, a person claimed credit for creating the teddy bear. 'You can't make this sh*t up! One of my skin teddy bears has apparently been involved in a prank that brought police attention! This is f****** wild!,' the post read. A search on the popular online marketplace Etsy shows a similar-looking bear titled 'human skin teddy bear' made with latex and sold by Dark Seed Creations for $165. 'One of the things that we're known for is that we make a lot of these props that are fake human skin,' Robert Kelly of Dark Seed Creations, who told KTLA he sold a similar teddy bear to someone in Victorville last week. 'So, those are all made out of latex. They're created from a mold. Our stuff is pretty recognizable in the industry. So, once this happened a few hours ago, my phone started blowing up, Facebook started blowing up.' It is unclear at the time of publication if this investigation is ongoing, or if there will be a separate investigation into the person who left the bear at the bus stop. What To Know The bear was discovered on July 13 and then reported to police, who cordoned off the area where it was found. DarkSeedCreations wrote on Facebook to say he had sold a bear to someone in the Victorville area last week, but "did not have any knowledge of the buyers['] intentions." His Facebook page shows a number of disturbing creations, ranging from fake skulls to large creatures covered in what appears to be fake human skin. These works also appear on his Etsy site. Comments under his posts about the prank include "The break you are waiting for" and "At least you're gonna get more business from the article lol." What People Are Saying DarkSeedCreations on Facebook: "Yes I made the bear in the news video. Yes that's my etsy shop screenshotted on [the] news articles. Yes I did ship that bear to an etsy customer in Victorville CA last week. Yes you can still order one too. No I did not have any knowledge of the buyers intentions nor was I involved in a prank on the other side of the nation from me." What Happens Next It is unclear at this time whether the investigation into the teddy bear is ongoing. More than 20 people have this type of teddy bear from DarkSeedCreation's Etsy site in their Etsy baskets.

Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr. remembered by San Bernardino County community after deadly pursuit crash
Friends and family members of Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr. gathered in Victorville on Tuesday, just hours after he died when he crashed while in pursuit of a stolen vehicle suspect. They say he wasn't even supposed to be working, but he picked up an overtime shift because he loved serving his community that much. "My brother was a good man," said Dominique Cohill. "It wasn't in vain and I know God loved him and I know he loved God and he's in an amazing place." She was one of dozens who gathered at the intersection of Seneca Road and El Evado Road at around 5 p.m. to honor Cuevas Jr.'s memory. He died early Monday while chasing a stolen car through the area. He collided with another driver at the intersection, sending his patrol car veering into a light pole. The force of the impact caused the car to split in two. Family says that he was originally supposed to be off that day, but picked up an overtime shift. "Putting on that uniform every day was just something that brightened his day," said Pedro Rivera, Cuevas Jr.'s uncle. "It was something he loved and we all supported him for that." He's also remembered as a devoted husband and father of two young children. He was raising in them in the same community where he grew up, graduating from Carter High School in Rialto. It was there that he helped coach the school's freshman football program from 2015 to 2017 before he joined law enforcement. "Rialto Unified School District offers our sincerest condolences to Deputy Cuevas' family, friends and the SBCSD, as we remember his heroic service to his community," said a statement from the Rialto Unified School District. He joined the department six years ago, briefly leaving for one year to join the Rialto Police Department before again becoming a sheriff's deputy. "I remember one thing he told me was if you really want better, you have to become better yourself," Cohill said. While they mourn their loved one, the community is also hoping that the suspect who started the pursuit, Rialto man Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., is held accountable for the tragedy he caused. Rialto Police Sergeant David Padilla said that he led them on a similar chase just last year that ended in similar circumstances. For that crash, which left an innocent civilian with injuries when they collided with a police car, Turner was sentenced to 16 months in prison. However, due to two California state laws, he was released after just eight months. "Chief Kling strongly believes that had it not been for the legislations that passed he would be in custody," Padilla said. "Mr. Turner shows very clear that he does not fear the consequences of the law. If it wasn't for .. Penal Code 1049, AB 109, Mr. Turner without a doubt would still be in state prison." He was booked and charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer causing death. He is slated to appear in court on Wednesday.
