Battle for docs' lobbies at BHU trauma centre
Varanasi: Two FIRs lodged against BHU's trauma centre in-charge, Prof Saurabh Singh and two other doctors in a week have exposed the infighting at this prestigious centre. While Dr Manjari Mishra lodged an FIR against Prof Singh and two bouncers (security personnel) of the trauma centre on June 12, Lanka police had already lodged an FIR against her husband, Prof Shashi Prakash Mishra, and another, Dr Vishwambhar Singh, on charges of assault, criminal intimidation and sections of the SC-ST Act on the order of the court. Lanka inspector Shivakant Mishra said on Monday that investigations into both cases were in progress, and action would be taken based on the outcomes. The internal politics of BHU started taking an ugly shape in May last year when Kamlesh Kumar Gond, a waiter at BHU trauma centre's patient kitchen, made a complaint to the Lanka police station against Shashi Prakash Mishra from the general surgery department and Vishwambhar Singh from the ENT department of SSL Hospital BHU. Kamlesh alleged that on May 24, Shashi Prakash Mishra, while passing through the patient kitchen, addressed him in a derogatory manner. When Kamlesh objected to the insulting behaviour, Mishra responded with caste-based slurs and behaved indecently. Kamlesh added that on May 26, Mishra again kicked a chair and once more used caste-based slurs against him. Kamlesh demanded the lodging of a case on charges including insulting behaviour and violations under the SC-ST Act. Kamlesh's advocate, Anupam Dwivedi said that when no case was registered despite reporting the matter to Lanka police, he sought the court's intervention. Even after the court's order issued on June 9, no FIR was lodged against the duo until a contempt petition was filed, said Dwivedi. After this, Lanka police registered Kamlesh's FIR on June 12. By late night, Lanka police lodged a case against the trauma centre in-charge and two bouncers on charges of sexual harassment, misconduct and intimidation. Moreover, many former student leaders could be found jumping into this tug-of-war between the lobbies of doctors and BHU officials. They claimed continuing the stir against corruption and other issues. However, after FIRs from both sides, all protests were calmed.
