Demand for CBI probe into 2021 self-immolation case
Sambalpur: Four years after a contractual employee of Sambalpur University set himself ablaze near the vice-chancellor's chamber, his son on Friday demanded a high-level CBI inquiry into the incident, alleging inaction and injustice despite repeated assurances. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Abhisekh Mishra, son of Dinabandhu Mishra, alleged that those responsible for his father's death were still at large. "What happened in Balasore is unfortunate, but a similar incident happened with my father four years ago. I am begging for justice. He was harassed by the then VC and three others who are still free. I request the police and state govt to form a high-level committee and initiate a CBI inquiry into the incident," he said. Dinabandhu, a technical assistant employed on a contractual basis for over two decades, immolated himself on April 20, 2021, allegedly following harassment and non-regularisation of his job despite court orders. He sustained critical burn injuries and succumbed later that night while being shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. In a letter submitted to the registrar just before the incident, Dinabandhu named then VC Sanjiv Mittal and several other staff members, holding them responsible for forcing him to take his own life. The letter also mentioned his long-standing grievance over job regularisation, for which the Orissa high court issued directions in 2017 and again in 2020. Despite four syndicate meetings since the latest order, his case was never taken up. Following his death, university staff staged a protest with hsi body, demanding justice, compensation and employment for a family member. The university eventually disbursed Rs 5.5 lakh and agreed to appoint Abhisekh as an outsourced staff member. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Later, the syndicate approved an ex gratia of Rs 8 lakh and forwarded the family's request for contractual employment to the higher education department. A case under Section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide) was also registered against Mittal based on Abhisekh's complaint. However, there has been little progress in the investigation. Abhisekh's renewed call for justice comes days after a college student in Balasore self-immolated over alleged sexual harassment, triggering state-wide protests. Drawing parallels, Abhisekh said, "Back then too, we cried for justice. No one listened. I don't want my father's case to become a forgotten tragedy." Nruparaj Sahu, registrar of Sambalpur University, said they provided financial assistance to Dinabandhu's family on compassionate grounds and an outsourced job to Abhisekh. "The case is sub judice, and we cannot comment more on the matter," he added.

Man attempts suicide over cop inaction in rescuing kidnapped daughter
Kendrapada: In yet another disturbing instance of alleged police inaction driving citizens to desperation, a 45-year-old man attempted suicide here on Wednesday evening by consuming poison — frustrated over the lack of progress in tracing his abducted daughter. The incident comes close on the heels of the Balasore case, where a 20-year-old student set herself ablaze after police allegedly failed to act on her sexual harassment complaint. The man, a farmer, drank pesticide and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack after initially being admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable. According to police sources, the minor girl was allegedly kidnapped on May 27 by a 24-year-old man from a nearby village. Despite an FIR being lodged on May 28 under BNS Section 140 (kidnapping) and relevant sections of the Pocso Act, the family claims no meaningful action followed. "The trauma of losing our daughter and the police's negligence drove my husband to take this step," said the girl's mother. Following the suicide attempt, the state home department said on X that it has directed the DGP and Kendrapada SP to act on the matter. Additional SP Debashis Dhal described it as a sensitive case under investigation and declined to share further details. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Local IIC Kishor Chandra Tarai said a special team has been formed and search operations conducted in Hyderabad and other locations to rescue the abducted girl. 3 killed, 50 injured in stampede near Gundicha temple
Puri: Atleast three persons, including two women, were killed and around 50 others injured in a stampede near Shree Gundicha temple in Puri on Sunday morning during a ceremony related to the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities. The incident took place around 4.20 am when thousands of devotees had gathered near the chariots parked in front of the temple. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, and the condition of six persons is stated to be critical. The Gundicha temple, located around 3 km from the 12th century shrine, is the aunt's house of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Subhadra and Balabhadra. During Rath Yatra, the deities visit their aunt's home, stay there for seven days and then return to their main abode — the Jagannath temple. According to police, chaos ensued after two trucks carrying materials for rituals reportedly entered the crowded spot near the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his sibling deities. The deities were seated on the chariots when the stampede took place. 'Thousands of devotees had assembled outside the temple since the early hours to catch a glimpse of the deities when the 'Pahuda' (cloth) covering the front portion of the chariots was to be removed, as part of the rituals,' the officials said. The deceased were identified as Basanti Sahu (36) from Bolagarh, and Premakant Mohanty (80) and Pravati Das (42) from Balipatna. Their bodies have been handed over to family members, and the cremation will take place at 'Swargadwar' in Puri. Majhi ordered an administrative inquiry into the incident to be carried out under the supervision of the Development Commissioner. The Odisha government will provide financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. Earlier, in a post on X, Majhi sought forgiveness from devotees of Lord Jagannath for the stampede, and tendered an apology on behalf of his government for the incident. 'Due to intense eagerness among devotees to have a glimpse of Mahaprabhu... an unfortunate incident occurred because of the resulting jostling and chaos. I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of devotees who lost their lives... pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to grant them the strength to bear this profound sorrow,' Majhi said. He also said security lapses behind the incident would be probed and those found guilty will face stringent action. State Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the situation is now normal at the Shree Gundicha temple, where devotees are offering prayers to the deities. Health department sources said among those critically injured, one has been shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, while five others are in ICU. The chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra had on Saturday reached Shree Gundicha temple, a day after the Rath Yatra began in Puri. The return car journey, known as 'Bahuda Yatra', will held on July 5.
