One person travelled all the way from New Zealand to visit the shop 'DELIGHTED' Popular shop in Scots town wins BEST store name in the UK A SCOTTISH shop called Dae It Yersel has won a competition to find the best shop name in Britain. The DIY store in Dunoon in Argyll and Bute fought off competition from 2,200 other small firms across the country. 2 The Dae It Yersel shop has been revealed to have the best shop name in Britain 2 The shop is located in Dunoon, in Argyll and Bute Credit: Alamy It saw off challenges to the title and the £2,500 top prize from landscape gardening firm Back To The Fuchsia in Bromley and Balti Towers in Halesowen, West Midlands. Co-owner Helena McLay said: 'Dae it Yersel has been family-owned since my mother, father and then-20-year-old brother took over a tiny wee DIY shop in 1970. 'I've been around the shop since I was three, and used to spend my after-school hours and school holidays here. 'The name is obviously the Glaswegian/Scots version of 'Do It Yourself'. 'We couldn't be more delighted to have won." She said that loads of tourists took photos of the shop, and that one person travelled all the way from New Zealand to visit her shop. The annual competition, put on by insurance firm Simply Business, found that 51 per cent of folk in a poll of 2,000 Brits said a witty shop name attracted them to shops. Harpreet Kaur, entrepreneur and winner of BBC's The Apprentice in 2022, helped judge the competition. She said: 'It was so heartening to see the character woven into every single small business name we judged, reflecting the passion and dedication of the thousands of entrepreneurs who entered. 'Dae It Yerself should be incredibly proud to have won the public vote; it's a testament to their unique appeal and the genuine connection they've built with their local community." Unassuming corner shop was seen by millions on classic 70s sitcom - but would you recognise it? Staff at Dae it Yersel shared the exciting news with followers on social media this week. The post on Facebook read: "Thank you all so much for your votes. A privilege to serve you all". And loyal customers flocked to the comments to congratulate the team on their win. Scottish housebuilder axes more than 20 jobs as employees face ‘worry and uncertainty'

It is the second time in two years the firm has been forced to make redundancies JOBS AT RISK Scottish housebuilder axes more than 20 jobs as employees face 'worry and uncertainty' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A SCOTTISH housebuilding firm is set to axe more than 20 jobs as its employees face "worry and uncertainty". Scotia Homes, based in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, announced it will make the cuts following £2.5million in pre-tax losses. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Scotia Homes announced that it is set to axe up to 25 jobs Credit: Alamy The firm has built homes across northeast Scotland and beyond for over three decades and currently employs 168 people. This is the second time in two years Scotia Homes has been forced to make redundancies. Joint managing director Richard Begbie said the decision to downsize was in response to "current market conditions". Up to 25 jobs are under threat - the majority of which will be made at head office. Mr Begbie told The Press and Journal: "As widely reported, the housebuilding sector is currently facing significant challenges due to a range of external factors. "In response to these market conditions, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the continued strength of our business. "As part of this strategy, we are proposing changes to our workforce structure. We deeply value the contributions of our team, and this decision has not been made lightly. "Scotia Homes remains dedicated to delivering quality homes and building vibrant communities, and these changes will help position us for future growth and continued success in a rapidly evolving market. "It is anticipated that those affected by redundancy will be less than 25 employees." Gordon and Buchan Tory MP Harriet Cross said: "I'm deeply concerned by these redundancies at Scotia Homes and the impact this could have on construction across the north-east. Homebase is set to close ten of its stores, which will soon be taken over by a major supermarket chain "More immediately, this announcement will bring worry and uncertainty for the employees at Scotia whose jobs are at risk, and I hold them in my thoughts at this time. "As one of the biggest house builders in the region, this announcement underlines the significant issues facing the sector, with challenging market conditions causing financial difficulties. "Towns such as Ellon rely on the employment of companies such as Scotia and a local firm making cutbacks like this is a real blow to the area. "I will now be seeking a meeting with the company to discuss this decision and what actions can be taken to mitigate any future job losses.'

The unpopular location ranked the lowest out of 95 stations nationwide A SCOTTISH service station has been named the worst in the UK in a new study of nearly a hundred locations. The Roadchef near Glasgow has an average Google review score of just 3.6 stars out of five, struggling with customer satisfaction. Disappointed visitors mentioned overpriced options and lukewarm tea in their reviews. The service station also only had five different amenities, food and retail choices. On the other end of the spectrum, Strensham Services came out as the UK's number one service station - with a score of 80.6 out of 100. The Worcestershire Roadchef offers popular options like McDonald's, LEON and Costa, all contributing to the experience of passersby. Whilst Moto Rugby has the highest Google review score, the location has limited options available, which impacted its performance in the rankings. Head of technical services at webuyanycar, Richard Evans, said: 'While some variation in the quality of service stations is to be expected, the findings do show an inconsistency in UK service stations. "For people who travel long distances, it's important to have service stations with good facilities available to them. Warning over petrol station mistake which can cost £1,000s "Taking regular breaks on long journeys is crucial for safety and well-being purposes, helping to prevent fatigue and keep drivers focused. "Central to this safety approach is having the appropriate rest points where drivers actually want to stop and take a break.'
