DGR, UK Embassy to explore partnerships in various fields
The meeting was led by Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Government Relations, and Edward Hobart, British Ambassador to the UAE. They were joined by H.E. During discussions, Sharjah outlined its planned government, community, and cultural initiatives for the next year, and dialogue also centered on identifying collaboration opportunities in shared priority areas, as well as facilitating information exchange regarding the UK's 2025 programmes . Strategic partnerships in intellectual and cultural exchange In his comments on the meeting, Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi emphasised that the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, is founded on the belief that culture and knowledge are among the most vital pillars for shaping strong international relations that can truly impact the course of human development. He stated that Sharjah views cultural and academic cooperation as a sustainable path for building bridges of understanding between nations . He added: 'Our meeting with the British Embassy delegation is an extension of this vision and a reflection of a deep-rooted belief that knowledge-based partnerships are the foundation of such engagement. Supporting higher education and academic exchange The delegates also explored collaboration prospects in higher education through the development of joint academic programmes between British universities and their counterparts in Sharjah. These programmes would focus on fields such as media, engineering, and the humanities, reinforcing Sharjah's position as a regional hub for knowledge and higher education . Development of creative industries and cultural events Additionally, the dialogue addressed support for the creative industries through partnerships encompassing arts, design, digital media, and content creation, and potential collaboration with the Sharjah Creative Quarter (SCQ) was also a key focus. Established in January 2025, the SCQ aims to enhance the emirate's creative economy by organizing joint cultural initiatives, facilitating expertise exchange, and empowering cultural entrepreneurs . Following an Emiri Decree issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the establishment of Sharjah Design Centre has been formalized, marking a significant step in the emirate's commitment to supporting design and production industries. A leading hub for sustainable creativity SDC will be housed within the Sharjah Creative Quarter (SCQ), a visionary project led by Honorary President Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed bin Sultan AlQasimi, chaired by Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi and managed by BEEAH Group. The SDC will house cutting-edge facilities and specialised labs, including the Glass Lab, Ceramic Lab, Textile Lab, Prototyping Lab, Wood Lab, Metal Lab, and Jewellery Lab. These state-of-the-art spaces will empower professionals, artisans, and innovators by providing the tools and resources needed to experiment, prototype, and produce environmentally sustainable and ethically crafted designs. His Highness has appointed Sheikha Hind bint Majid Al Qasimi as the Centre's Director. Sheikha Hind has been instrumental in developing a framework to enhance Sharjah's design and production industries, integrating prototyping as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainable innovation. The ground-breaking project will serve as a distinguished destination for artistes, creatives and intellectuals from both within and outside the country, offering them a platform to showcase their talents and exchange knowledge and experiences with others. Strategically positioned in Sharjah's epicentre for educational prominence and innovation, adjacent to landmark developments such as the House of Wisdom, the American University of Sharjah, and the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park, the Sharjah Creative Quarter will foster a vibrant community for innovators and creative minds. Earlier, His Highness Dr. SheikhSultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, issued an Emiri Decree establishing the Sharjah Creative Quarter project and appointed Sheikha Hoor Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Art Foundation, as its head. Key components of the Sharjah Creative Quarter will include: • Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi Collection, a museum showcasing a captivating selection of art and historical artefacts from the personal collection of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Supreme Council of Family Affairs (SCFA) • Qasimi Archives, honouring the legacy of Sheikh Khalid Al Qasimi, founder and designer of the London-based QASIMI fashion label, and cultivating next-generation fashion designers to use clothing as a medium for cultural dialogue and exchange. • Sharjah Fashion Lab offers world-class expertise empowering local designers by providing access to specialised services, advanced machinery, and technological innovation to develop fashion prototypes, create digital patterns, and produce prototypes that meet global manufacturing standards. • Irthi Museum, an initiative of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council dedicated to promoting and contemporising Emirati and regional crafts by empowering traditional craftswomen. • Sharjah Design Centre, a newly established initiative pioneering facilities for prototyping and design fabrication through woodwork, ceramics, metalwork, textile, jewellery designing, and additional facilities for design mastery through conversation and experimentation, including fine jewellery and other artistic elements, fostering design mastery through collaboration, experimentation, and a vibrant creative exchange. The programme offers a dynamic platform for artists, creatives, and intellectuals from the UAE and beyond to showcase their talents and exchange ideas. Buildings intersect with each other to create a spatial experience that is fundamental to the project. "Patios and plazas connect interiors with exteriors and the treatment of light brings focus on contemplation and creativity as well as the integral connection between the different components and their inhabitants, spaces that encourage interaction between design, art and craftsmanship and are open to creative freedom. A proposal that retains the intangible experience, where atmosphere, time and memory can awaken collective creativity.' 'We selected Taller de Arquitectura by Mauricio Rocha, in collaboration with Daniel Rosselló, as the architects for the Sharjah Creative Quarter. Their expertise in museum and public infrastructure design, along with their design philosophy, is aligned with our vision to create an epicentre of creativity, conversation and collaboration," Sheikha Hoor added. The Role of BEEAH BEEAH, a leader in sustainable solutions in the Middle East, has been appointed as the strategic lead and project manager for the SCQ. "We are broadening our horizons into various sectors, including real estate, aiming to embed creativity and innovation into our operations as we work to shape a sustainable future," stressed Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and vice chairman of BEEAH. "Our aim is not merely to construct a space but to create a vibrant hub that elevates Sharjah's status as a distinctive centre of culture and creativity," he added.
