51 Dead In 11 Days As Himachal Bears Brunt Of Monsoon Fury; Power & Water Supply Hit
Last Updated: Heavy monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh have caused 51 deaths in 11 days, says SDMA. Infrastructure losses exceed Rs 356 crore, disrupting power and water supplies. Heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread destruction across Himachal Pradesh, leaving 51 people dead in just 11 days and six people still missing, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). The relentless downpour has thrown normal life out of gear due significant loss to life, infrastructure, and livelihoods across multiple districts in the hill state. As per SDMA data, a total of 13 houses — 9 pucca (permanent) and 4 kutcha (temporary) — completely collapsed due to torrential rain, while another 35 kutcha houses were partially damaged. Additionally, rain-induced landslides and flash floods destroyed as many an nine shops and 41 cattle sheds. Himachal Rain Fury: Damages Worth Crores It is estimated that the Public Works and Jal Shakti departments have suffered combined damages exceeding Rs 356 crore. As rain pounded the hill state, road connectivity was majorly affected with 406 major and minor roads being closed for traffic. With the road closure, links with several remote regions have been cut off which has further complicated relief and rescue operations. Himachal Rain: Power, Water Supply Affected The downpour has rendered many areas without electricity as 1,515 transformers remain non-functional. Furthermore, 171 water supply projects have been affected, posing a risk to public health and sanitation amid ongoing rescue efforts. Earlier, the IMD had predicted the rainfall intensity would decrease slightly starting July 1. However, it said, intermittent light to moderate showers would continue across the plains and mid-hill districts of the state until July 6. Ship accidents: SDMA launches Web Application
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 19 (UNI) The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has developed a web application to collect information about objects washing ashore or floating in the sea in connection with recent ship accidents off the Kerala coast. The app collects details such as the name and mobile number of the person reporting the object, a description of the item, its live location or nearest landmark, and images. So far, 65 containers linked to the ship accident have been recovered along the coast and relocated to various ports. In Thiruvananthapuram district, 21 barrels found near Vizhinjam and Kovalam have been moved to secure locations at the Vizhinjam port. Two barrels suspected to be related to the accident washed ashore in Alappad (Kollam district) and Kumbla Koyippadi (Kasaragod district). The vessel involved in the incident, Van Hai 503, has now been moved 57 nautical miles away from the Kerala coast. Efforts are ongoing to tow it further out to sea. Reports indicate that the ship is still emitting smoke and fire. According to information from the Coast Guard, there is a possibility that containers that fell from the ship may wash ashore along the southern part of Ernakulam district and the coastal areas of Alappuzha and Kollam districts. In this context, the SDMA emphasized that no one should touch or approach any suspicious object found along the shore. Singapore-flagged container ship catches fire near Kerala coast; rescue work underway
A Singapore-flagged container ship on its way to Navi Mumbai has caught fire off the Kerala coast, a defence spokesperson said in Kochi on Monday. The defence spokesperson said in a statement that the vessel, identified as M V Wan Hai 503, departed Colombo on June 7 and was slated to reach NPC Mumbai on June 10. Around 10.30 am on Monday, the Navy got formation about the underdeck fire on board the ship. 'INS Surat, scheduled to enter Kochi for IST, has been diverted by WNC at 11 am t provide assistance to the distressed vessel. Additionally, In-dornier sortie is being planned from Garuda,' said the Navy spokesperson. Official sources at Kerala's State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said the incident took place 78 nautical miles away from the Beypore coast in Kozhikode district. 'Twenty containers have fallen into the sea and there were multiple blasts at the ship. The ship had 22 crew members and 18 of them jumped into the sea with a rescue boat. The ship has not so far sunk,'' said an official. The SDMA said that if the injured crew members were being brought to Kerala, the district collectors of Kozhikode and Ernakulam would be asked to ensure treatment for the injured. WAN HAI 503 had been sailing at a speed of 14.4 knots and was expected to arrive in Mumbai on June 10. The vessel (IMO 9294862, MMSI 563812000) is a container ship built in 2005 and sailing under the flag of Singapore. The defence spokesperson said that out of the 22 crew members, 18 had left the ship on a boat. The crew members are being rescued by the Coast Guard and Indian Navy ships and aircraft. The vessel is on fire and adrift.

CS tells officials to gear up for monsoon eventualities
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Secretary K Vijayanand instructed officials to ensure comprehensive preparedness for the southwest monsoon season, emphasising proactive measures to mitigate disasters like cyclones and floods. During a video conference held at the State Secretariat on Thursday, he engaged with various State departments, alongside representatives from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), and other Central government bodies, to review monsoon readiness. He stressed the need for advanced action plans to address potential heavy rains or cyclones. He urged the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and other departments to anticipate risks such as overflowing rivers, streams, and canals, and to collaborate with Vassar Labs for effective planning. He directed the SDMA and Real-Time Governance Society (RTGS) to coordinate with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for enhanced disaster management. He emphasised minimising loss of life and property during calamities, calling for the timely restoration of normalcy through department-specific action plans. The Water Resources Department was instructed to strengthen flood embankments, stockpile sandbags, and intensify floodplain patrolling. The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department was tasked with keeping JCBs, cranes, and power shovels ready to clear fallen trees and restore traffic on major roads. The Panchayat Raj & Rural Development (PR&RD) Department was directed to ensure standby generators for water supply schemes and leak-free pipelines, while the Municipal Administration Department was asked to complete desilting of urban drains and canals. The Energy Department was told to stock standby generators, tree cutters, and electricity poles, and the Medical and Health Department was to ensure adequate medicine supplies and raise public awareness about preventing infectious diseases in flood-prone areas. The Civil Supplies Department was instructed to maintain sufficient stocks of essential commodities at MLS points. He directed Revenue Principal Secretary G Jayalakshmi to circulate GO No. 1 and GO No. 13, which outline increased compensation for disaster victims, to all departments. He recommended biweekly departmental reviews to ensure effective disaster preparedness.
