Russian strike on Ukraine's Odesa kills two, wounds 14

Kyiv: A Russian drone strike on Ukraine's southern region of Odesa killed two people and wounded 14, including children, local authorities said on Saturday. Moscow has stepped up drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. Peace talks initiated by the United States to end the three-year conflict have meanwhile stalled. "Rescuers pulled the bodies of two people from the rubble who died as a result of a hostile drone strike on a residential building," Odesa Governor Oleg Kiper said on Telegram. The night-time strike wounded 14 people, Kiper added, "three of them children." Separately, authorities of Ukraine's southern Kherson region said one person was killed and three others were wounded in Russian strikes over the past day. "Russian troops targeted critical and social infrastructure and residential areas in the region," the Kherson's governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said on Telegram early on Saturday. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in Russia's offensive, which has forced millions from their homes and devastated much of eastern Ukraine. At peace talks, Russia has demanded Ukraine cede even more land and give up Western military support as a precondition to peace -- terms Kyiv says are unacceptable. Meanwhile. former German chancellor Olaf Scholz issued a strong warning against harbouring illusions about the further plans of Russian President Vladimir Putin at a party event on Saturday. The Kremlin leader wants to hold on to his partial conquest of Ukraine and would "like it to be even bigger," said Scholz in Berlin, where he was bid farewell from office by his Social Democrats (SDP).

Taking the cue from Chiranjeevi

A diehard Chiranjeevi fan, Hemanth Kumar Sharma started donating blood after he turned 18 inspired by the actor. 'Audio cassettes featuring Chiranjeevi movies would have lines by the actor requesting people to donate blood and that is how I got started on donating blood as a small gesture to my idol,' says 33-year-old Hemanth, who was among those honoured at a World Blood Donor Day celebration in Chennai. Hemanth works as a pujari in Sullurpeta, a small town bordering Tamil Nadu, and has built an army of volunteers by conducting blood donation camps under the banner of Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust. But what is more commendable about him is that he does not hesitate to travel to Chennai every time he is presented with a request from any of the groups to donate blood. 'It was Srivatsav Vema of Platelet Club who motivated me to start donating SDP or Single Donor Platelets and until today I have volunteered more than 40 times,' says Hemanth who has given blood more than 30 times. Unlike regular blood donation, platelet donation is time-consuming.'This takes at least two hours. First they collect the sample, screen it and start the process for donation. One can donate SDP once in 15 to 30 days,' he says. At his home town, Hemanth conducts SDP camps four times a year and he donates the collected SDPs to the Indian Red Cross Society. Blood donors honoured at an event organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare More than 100 volunteers from across Tamil Nadu were honoured by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu at Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital, Omandurar Government Estate, to commemorate World Blood Donors Day observed on June 14. One of the eligibility criteria set by the Department was that the individual should have donated blood for a minimum of 50 times. From Chennai, 15 volunteers of the Platelet Club were honoured at the event. 'We have close to 40 people who have donated more than 50 times but we could gather only 15 of them in the short notice that we got,' says Srivatsav Vema, who runs the Platelet Club. Donating blood is an unshakeable habit for many of them in the Club. Rohith Fernandes, for example, has donated blood 221 times; Karthik Natarajan 252 times; and Poorna Chandran 200 times. There are many others in the 100s club including Kishore Gupta (182), Muthukumarasamy R. (100), Suresh Kumar (112), R. Vallinayagam (110), Naresh E. (183) and Baskaran from Villupuram (160). The blood donation camps organised by Srivatsav Vema and his team of donors are exclusively for government hospitals. A key feature of this club is they donate platelets that is used for those undergoing treatment for cancer, dengue and for transplantation surgery.

SD Guthrie, Sime Darby Property to develop industrial and logistics hub on Carey Island

PETALING JAYA: SD Guthrie Bhd and Sime Darby Property Bhd (SDP) have signed a joint venture agreement to develop up to 2,000 acres of land on Carey Island, Selangor, to support sustainable economic growth and innovation. The joint venture agreement is a culmination of discussions which began in 2023, and is driven by a shared vision for long-term value creation that will be formalised through the establishment of a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The collaboration represents a unique opportunity for both companies to unlock Carey Island's full potential, transforming it into a leading industrial and logistics hub that will co-exist with the integrated and well-established palm oil business on the island and complement the existing operations at Westports and Northport in Port Klang. Both SD Guthrie and SDP are strategic investee companies of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), one of the largest fund management companies in Malaysia. PNB will nominate the chairman of the newly formed SPV. PNB president and group chief executive Datuk Abdul Rahman Ahmad said, 'We laud and greatly support this joint venture between SD Guthrie and SDP, which aligns with national aspirations and GEAR-uP initiatives by the government in catalysing domestic investments. This collaboration between PNB's two strategic companies will provide a boost towards the sustainable development of this high potential area as well as help bolster further Malaysia's economic and industrialisation growth.' The 2,000 acre site on Carey Island provides the scalability required for world-class logistics facilities, integrated supply chains and high-value industrial developments, required to attract global players and investments. The port will thus be well positioned to compete with ports in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, giving a boost to Malaysia's aspirations to become a logistics powerhouse in the region. Today, Carey Island is celebrated for its fully integrated oil palm plantation, the last one of its kind in the Greater Klang Valley. It is an important location for the Malaysian plantation industry and is used frequently to host visitors from around the world, including foreign government delegations, ambassadors, research and development (R&D) institutions and universities. SD Guthrie operates two estates and palm oil mills on the island, all of which are certified to the highest sustainability standards in the world. Also on the island are a kernel crushing plant, biodiesel plant, R&D facilities, robotics and innovation centre and nursery. Palm oil produced in Carey Island is processed in two large refineries located nearby in Langat and Port Klang, which serve customers from around the world. There are also 14 historical buildings on Carey Island that are listed as heritage sites by the National Heritage Department, a large biodiversity park and sensitive mangrove ecosystems that are maintained by SD Guthrie. Combined with the thriving plantation business, the new development on Carey Island will stimulate economic growth, generate employment opportunities and uplift the local economy while preserving the valuable heritage elements of the site. The strategic approach to foster sustainable value creation will ensure that the needs and well-being of local communities, including the indigenous Mah Meri people on the island, are prioritised. SD Guthrie owns 79% of Carey Island, or 28,646 acres. The plantation is managed sustainably to ensure environmental conservation. In 2024, SD Guthrie announced its expansion into two new business areas: industrial parks and renewable energy. In a joint statement issued by the two companies, SD Guthrie group managing director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said, 'We fully support the government's aspirations to accelerate the growth of international trade and cater to the demand for innovative industrial facilities. Carey Island has been identified by the government as the new site for a world-class port due to its suitable and strategic location near Port Klang, and proximity to Pulau Indah. 'Additionally, the island is conveniently connected to the city via the South Klang Valley Expressway which integrates with the North-South Expressway, ensuring accessibility.' SDP group managing director and CEO Datuk Seri Azmir Merican said, 'We are excited to partner with SD Guthrie on this timely opportunity to unlock value in Carey Island as a dynamic port and advance the nation's aspirations of becoming a regional logistics and economic hub. The collaboration allows us to begin master planning and designing a future-ready industrial ecosystem that will serve the needs of businesses and communities for years to come.'

Can Momentum in QNX Unit Fuel BlackBerry's Top-Line Growth?

BlackBerry Limited's BB QNX business, formed by rebranding its IoT unit, is benefiting from strength in the automotive segment, particularly strong demand for its solutions across the advanced driver assistance systems market and digital cockpit domain. Continued design win momentum is anticipated to further strengthen the QNX royalty backlog. The increasing adoption of the next-generation version of the QNX operating system, Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0 (across aerospace, medical equipment, rail and defence verticals), as well as the release of the QNX General Embedded Development Platform, are aiding it. It supports modern platforms (ARMv9, RISC-V, multicore CPUs) and development tools and includes QNX Hypervisor 2.2 for mixed-criticality virtualization. Recently, BlackBerry's QNX announced that its SDP 8.0 will serve as the base OS for the Eclipse Foundation's Safe Open Vehicle Core (S-CORE) Project, supporting faster, cost-effective development of Software Defined Vehicles and marking a key step toward a common, safety-critical automotive platform. In May 2025, BlackBerry's QNX unit launched QNX Hypervisor 8.0, a virtualization tool built on SDP 8.0 to simplify complex embedded software development. It enables multiple OSes—like Android, Linux and QNX—to run securely on a single SoC via a microkernel architecture, offering virtualized memory, CPUs, devices and system isolation. Growing momentum in QNX Cabin with multi-year deal wins from the top 10 global auto OEMs further cushions its prospects. Despite delays in automotive software development, QNX's royalty backlog grew year over year to about $865 million. This shows that QNX is adding future royalty revenue faster than it is being recognized, which BlackBerry sees as a strong sign of the business's long-term health. QNX is a leading brand in the automotive sector, and BlackBerry is increasingly leveraging its strength as a key driver for top-line growth for fiscal 2026 and beyond. For the QNX business, revenues are expected to be in the range of $51-$55 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2026. However, the company anticipates a sequential fall in the revenues from the QNX business, which totaled $65.8 million during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Volatility in the automotive sector remains concerning. Management, on the last earnings call, highlighted that due to recent tariff changes, especially on automotive goods, BlackBerry is currently unsure how this will affect its business. While it does not expect a direct impact on products and services, there may be indirect effects on its customers, such as supply chain disruptions and changes in demand. Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG Android Automotive OS (AAOS), launched in 2017, is a full-stack OS running directly on vehicle hardware, with services like Google Maps, Assistant and Play Store. It powers vehicles from Volvo, GM, Ford, Renault-Nissan, Stellantis, BMW and others. BMW adopted AAOS for OS8, and Ford plans to shift over half its fleet to it. According to S&P Global's report, AAOS will reach approximately 18% market share by 2027, while QNX falls to around 5%. Though AAOS lacks real-time and safety certifications, it excels in infotainment and app integration, often requiring a separate RTOS for critical systems. Wind River, owned by Aptiv PLC APTV, offers VxWorks (a real-time OS), Wind River Linux and Wind River Studio (cloud-based development/IoT platform). VxWorks is a mature RTOS certified for ISO 26262 ASIL-D, widely used in avionics and some automotive domains (particularly ADAS and autonomous platforms). Wind River has collaborated with Elektrobit to demo a software-defined vehicle controller. It's among the few RTOSes supporting OCI containers for edge deployments. While its automotive market share is smaller than BlackBerry QNX's, it's widely deployed in mission-critical systems. Wind River partners with AWS, NXP, Intel and Tier-1 suppliers, focusing on software-defined vehicles and IoT. Recent efforts include deeper integration with Elektrobit and AWS to advance autonomous vehicle development and edge-to-cloud solutions.
