One dead after crash on State Highway three in Te Kūiti

Police confirmed one person had died and a boat had been involved. New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), said the road had been closed at 12.45pm on Friday between Te Kūiti and SH4. "Delay your journey and expect long delays," it said. The road was re-opened on Friday evening. A police spokesperson said the Serious Crash Unit attended and completed a scene examination. SH3 reopens following Taranaki flooding

Photo: 123rf SH3 north of Taranaki has reopened between Mōkau and Piopio. The route has been closed following heavy rain in the region that caused widespread flooding and slips. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said a single lane opened from Sunday under traffic management, which will be in place over the coming week to allow for clean up. Further south, on SH3 at Mount Messenger, the southbound lane remains closed following a slip under the road. While the other main route north out of Taranaki, SH43 - The Forgotten Highway - is closed between Whangamomona and Tamarunui due to a slip. NZTA said geotechnical experts are expected on site in the next couple of days. SH3 still closed at Awakino after mudslide

Photo: NZTA State Highway 3 remains closed south of Awakau Road at Awakino, in Taranaki on Friday morning after a large mudslide came down yesterday afternoon. The Transport Agency said contractors are assessing the situation and beginning the clean-up job. UPDATE 9:40AM The closure area has been extended, with SH3 now being CLOSED between Awakino Gorge and Mokau. The road is likely to remain closed for several hours for slip assessment and ongoing debris clearing. ^JP They are also clearing a number of smaller slips on the same highway, between Tongapōrutu and Piopio, caused by wet weather overnight. Motorists need to use State Highway 1 instead. A further update is expected this afternoon. Large mudslide blocks State Highway 3 in Taranaki

The slip happened at Awakino and the highway south of Awakau Road will be closed overnight, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA)said. Contractors at Awakino and Piopio are turning back traffic and motorists are being asked to avoid the area. NZTA said the alternative route is State Highway 1, but it is longer.
