Ireland U21 goalkeeper Killian Cahill joins Leyton Orient
FORMER SHAMROCK ROVERS goalkeeper Killian Cahill has joined Leyton Orient. The 21-year-old has signed a two-year deal following the expiration of his contract at Brighton & Hove Albion. Advertisement The Meath native joined Brighton from Rovers in 2022 and made three appearances for the U21 side in the EFL Trophy last season. At international level, Cahill has been capped twice for the Republic of Ireland U21s. 'I can't wait to get going and I'm really excited to join Leyton Orient,' Cahill said. 'I spoke to Josh (Keeley, Ireland U21 international) a lot last season, so feel like I know quite a bit about the club already. 'His journey here last season is a real inspiration; coming in as a young goalkeeper to fight for his place and taking his chance when it came. If I get an opportunity to play then I want to take it and help the club to have another good season.' Orient manager Richie Wellens added: 'Killian comes with a great reputation from Brighton and we're excited to have him with us at Leyton Orient. We needed to add a couple of goalkeepers to our squad with Josh Keeley and Sam Howes departing, and Killian will add real competition to that department. 'Killian is a long-term investment for the football club, and we are continuing with our recruitment process with the start of pre-season approaching us.'

'I am sad to see him leave... He's a good manager and a good person'
SHAMROCK ROVERS manager Stephen Bradley paid tribute to Damien Duff after it was confirmed on Sunday that the former Chelsea star had stepped down as Shelbourne manager. The pair had been at odds this season, with Duff earlier this month accusing Bradley and Shamrock Rovers of showing a lack of class. But Bradley put those issues behind him as he accentuated the positive aspects of his rival's impact since becoming a League of Ireland manager in 2021. 'First of all, I am sad to see him leave Shelbourne and the league as a whole,' Bradley said after Rovers' 2-0 loss to Bohemians last night. 'He's obviously a good manager and coach, he's a good person, and he is and was very, very good for the league. Sad to see him go, and hopefully he comes back in the league at some point. 'I'm sure he has his reasons for making the decision. 'If he's made that decision, he obviously feels strong about it, so you've got to respect that.' Advertisement Bradley said he had not spoken to Duff since Sunday's shock announcement. Asked whether they would talk in time to try resolve their differences, the Hoops manager added: 'That's between me and Damien, when we're in it, and we were in it, he will do everything to win for his team, and I will do everything to win for my team. And that will never change. 'There was lots in [the rift], but that's not for me to talk about right now.' Duff also fell out with Alan Reynolds during their time as opposing managers, but the Bohemians boss was similarly magnanimous in his praise for the ex-Ireland international. 'I don't know the ins and outs of it, but I'm disappointed,' Reynolds said. 'He's been fantastic for the league, to go win a title after only a few years as a new manager [is impressive]. 'I don't think people realise the pressure of managing. It's 24/7. You go away from the ground losing a game, and there's no feeling like it. 'You try to describe to people how you've put in so much, it's 24/7 all of the time, and it has an effect. 'We have had our different views and not a great relationship. We don't know each other, but I'd still admire him from a distance.' On the game itself, Reynolds lavished praise on his side after a deserved 2-0 victory against the league leaders. 'I was just talking to [former Bohs player and coach] Derek Pender. He said he hasn't seen such a good 45 and he's been here such a long time. I thought it was the best I've seen us without the ball, but I'm not surprised. With the ball, there were transitions when they lost the ball from us winning it back, we pressed and tried to score. 'Stevie O'Donnell [and the other coaching staff] are outstanding at what they do, and the information, we're all on the same page about what we're passing on. And that's key.' Reynolds also addressed the criticism he received from the club's supporters after some disappointing results earlier in the season. 'I know our relationship [with the fans] has been fractured at times, but we're in a good place now. 'I think the dressing room is really good, and I don't have any doubts that the dressing room's been behind me, even last year, when the results weren't going well.' Bradley, meanwhile, admitted his side had not been up to the standard required for a big Dublin derby, as they suffered a fifth defeat in six matches against Bohemians. 'First half we were miles off the game, a million miles off what's required in any game but especially in this type of game, so as a result they were two up and could have been three or four to be honest, we were that far off the level, but that's football. 'There are loads of factors that we have to try and understand why we were so far off it in that first half. You've got to credit Bohs, they were good but we were a million miles off it in every aspect, in every way, and you don't win games of football in this league if you're that far off the levels.'

Runaway leaders Shamrock Rovers inflict more damage on Cork City
SHAMROCK ROVERS 4 (Michael Noonan 6, 29, Pico Lopes 26, Rory Gaffney 49) CORK CITY 1 (Alex Nolan 69) Orange was the appropriate colour donned by Cork City as despite the sunniest day of the year they felt a relegation gale warning. Their survival prospects won't be defined by another humbling from runaway leaders but the manner of this meek surrender, a week after Bohemians schooled them at home, will cause alarm. A bright start for the visitors was soon punctuated by 16-year-old Michael Noonan being allowed to slalom into the box and fire the opener for Shamrock Rovers beneath Tein Troost. Another pair of goals were conceded to Pico Lopes and Noonan merely over two minutes apart, leaving the game effectively over as a contest by the half hour mark. Rory Gaffney completed the rout four minutes after the restart before City substitute Alex Nolan bundled home a consolation. If that coming with 21 minutes remaining might have signalled a comeback, then the respective positions at the summit and foot of the table injected reality into the assumption. Rovers, resting several mainstays including Jack Byrne, Graham Burke and Matt Healy for Monday's derby against Bohemians, were always in cruise control. There was never any inkling of the 4-4 draw at Tallaght from City's last Premier Division campaign. City sit where they never were during that relegation season of two years ago, rock bottom, and the new management of Ger Nash and David Meyler will circle back-to-back home games against Drogheda United on Monday and St Patrick's Athletic four days later as pivotal. Eight-placed Waterford extending their buffer to 13 points reduces further the hopes of avoiding the relegation playoff but the pressing challenge as the games remaining dissolve is avoiding the automatic drop. City have lost over half their 20 matches with all Nash having to show from his four games to date a draw at home to Shelbourne. Holding the champions raised talk of a revival yet it can be perceived as a false dawn, for the traditional managerial bounce hasn't materialised. His decision to cull captain Charlie Lyons from the starting line-up spoke of decisiveness from his early takeaways but the central defensive duo in his place were given the runaround by rampant Rovers. Lyons was introduced at the break, along with another experienced campaigner, Seán Murray, in a bid to stem the bleeding. Those calls followed an impromptu discussion between Nash and his recently appointed assistant after being subjected to another sobering 45 minutes. Djanairo Daniels looked to have set the tone with a shove on Danny Mandroiu within moments of kick-off followed by a shot wide but the rest of the half would be spent predominantly inside City's half. Their livewire Cathal O'Sullivan was impeded from playing out of it in the passage of play leading up the opener. Once his pass inside was nicked off the toe of Kitt Nelson, two passes later and O'Sullivan was raiding into the box. He chopped beyond both City's centre-backs, Darragh Crowley and Freddie Anderson, before tucking a soft shot beneath an unusually poor Troost. Malik Dijksteel did test Ed McGinty and Evan McLaughlin fired over but two quickfire goals made it 3-0. O'Sullivan's clumsy 26th minute tackle on Trevor Clarke incurred a booking and free-kick, which Dylan Watts curled in for Lopes to elude Crowley and power home with a thumping header. City were dissected again from the next attack, Noonan slipping in between the two defenders to stroke home his second. Further slack defending on the turnover cost the Rebels when Mandroiu sent Gaffney clear past the lost Josh Fitzpatrick. All the veteran striker had to do was roll the ball into the net. It was keep-ball for Rovers thereafter with a spate of subs from both sides. Whereas Milan Mbeng hooked a clear sight on goal wide, Nolan didn't miss with his, despite defender John O'Sullivan attempting to prevent it crossing the line. SHAMROCK ROVERS: E McGinty; D Cleary, R Lopes, C O'Sullivan; D Grant (A McEneff 73), D Watts (C Barrett 52), J O'Sullivan, T Clarke (M Kovalevskis 46); R Gaffney, D Mandroiu (G O'Neill 52); M Noonan. CORK CITY: T Tein; M Mbeng (H Nevin 61), F Anderson, D Crowley, J Fitzpatrick; E McLaughlin, G Bolger; C O'Sullivan (A Nolan 66), K Nelson (S Murray 46), M Dijksteel (C Lyons 46); D Daniels (S Maguire 61). Referee: A O'Dowd (Dublin). Attendance: 4,355.

Shamrock Rovers face potential All Ireland derby with Cliftonville in UEFA Conference League
SHAMROCK ROVERS WILL play the winner of Irish League side Cliftonville and St Joseph's of Gibraltar in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League. Stephen Bradley's side were parachuted from the first-round pots yesterday to this afternoon's draw after Drogheda United's expulsion from the competition on multi-club grounds was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday. Advertisement The League of Ireland club will play the first leg away followed by the return in Tallaght Stadium as they bid to reach the league phase of the competition for the third time under Bradley. If St Patrick's Athletic overcome Lithuanian side FC Hegelmann they will join Rovers in the second round with a tie against either Kalju of Estonia or Alabania's Partizani. Shelbourne's potential opponents in the second qualifying round of the Champions League have also been confirmed. Should Damien Duff's men come out on top in the All Ireland derby with Linfield in the first round then they will face Qarabag. The Azerbaijan outfit are seasoned European operators and have played in the group/league stage of the Europa League in nine of the past 11 seasons. They reached the Champions League in 2017/18 and Conference League in 21/22 in the other two campaigns. However, a defeat to the Irish League champions would mean Shels face either FK Žalgiris (Lithuania) or Hamrun Spartans (Malta) in the second qualifying round of the Conference League.
