(Japanese Defense Ministry) SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- Japan detailed plans for security cooperation with Australia, India, Europe and others in its 2025 defense white paper, as Tokyo looks to like-minded countries to supplement its alliance with the U.S. in deterring China's maritime expansion. Warnings about China stand out in this year's edition of the annual document, released by the Defense Ministry on Tuesday. The report details the possibility that China could use "gray zone" incidents -- which can include military intimidation, blockades and other non-armed attacks -- to invade Taiwan while avoiding intervention by the U.S. military.

Japan joins huge US-led Resolute Force Pacific air exercise

(Photo by Konosuke Urata) SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- Japan's Air Self-Defense Force is participating in a major training exercise conducted by the U.S. Air Force around Japan, in what observers say is a show of unity intended to boost deterrence against China. Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC), running until Aug. 4, will take place in multiple locations in the Pacific including Hawaii, Guam, Japan and international airspace, according to U.S. Pacific Air Forces.

Japan teams with NATO to counter China, Russia cyber threats

(Photo by Suzu Takahashi) SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- Japan has begun sharing intelligence related to cyberattacks with NATO member countries, Nikkei has learned, exchanging information about malware used by China, North Korea, Russia and other countries with the aim of improving cyberdefense. Japan's Defense Ministry and Self-Defense Forces have joined NATO's Malware Information Sharing Platform (MISP), a framework created in 2013. South Korea also participates as a non-NATO member.

China's show of force in Pacific may be aimed at US: analyst
SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- A Chinese fighter jet's close encounter with a Japanese patrol plane over the weekend is part of a push by Beijing to show its combat capabilities in the Pacific to the U.S. and Japan, an analyst says. A Maritime Self-Defense Force P-3C plane was followed by a Chinese J-15 fighter for around 40 minutes on Saturday and 80 minutes on Sunday, the Ministry of Defense said on Thursday. The Chinese jet flew within 45 meters of the patrol plane at the same altitude, according to Tokyo.

Japan, India to set up defense consultation body for deeper cooperation
SHINNOSUKE NAGATOMI TOKYO -- Japan and India agreed Monday to form a new consultative body of defense officials, with the goal of adding another layer of security cooperation between the two countries in the face of mounting regional uncertainties. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani met for approximately an hour and a half with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.
