(Photo by Mayumi Tsumita) SHOTARO TANI TOKYO -- Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba vowed to stay on as the country's leader, even as his ruling coalition looked set to suffer a significant loss of seats in Sunday's upper house election. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito are poised to end up with far fewer seats than the 141 they held in the chamber, even after including the 75 seats that were not up for re-election.

TotalEnergies to start production at Asia-serving Mozambique LNG in 2029

(Photo by Yuki Kohara) SHOTARO TANI TOKYO -- The CEO of French oil major TotalEnergies said production of liquefied natural gas at its $20 billion dollar Mozambique LNG project will begin in 2029, given the improving security situation and the release of key financing from the U.S. Patrick Pouyanne told Nikkei Asia that the company is looking to relaunch the project this summer, after years of suspended activities due to violence from Islamic insurgents. That will put the huge natural gas project, key to Asia's energy security, in line to start operations before the end of the decade, he said.

The U.S. struck three nuclear sites in Iran, each vital to Tehran's nuclear program, using so-called bunker busters to target underground facilities. President Donald Trump has claimed the attacks "obliterated" the sites, but the exact damage is still being analyzed by experts.

Oil plunges, Asian stocks up on Trump ceasefire claim

The price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, opened Asian trading down more than 3% to trade below $70 per barrel. The drop came on top of a 7% drop in Monday trading, its biggest fall since March 2022.

Nippon Steel set to complete $14bn acquisition of U.S. Steel next week
SHOTARO TANI and NAOKI MATSUDA TOKYO -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday cancelled the decision by former President Joe Biden to block Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel, paving the way for the Japanese company to finalize its takeover of its American counterpart. Nippon Steel is expected to complete the acquisition on Wednesday U.S. time, buying all U.S. Steel shares for $14.1 billion.
