SK Telecom drops sharply in brand value in Q2 after USIM hacking

SK Telecom Co., South Korea's largest mobile carrier, lost its top spot in local brand value rankings following a data breach that affected its entire 25 million user base, a local brand valuation firm said Monday. SK Telecom earned 850.1 points on the BrandStock Top Index for the second quarter, dropping sharply to 40th place from 11th in the previous quarter, when it ranked the highest among local mobile carriers with 890.1 points, according to Brandstock. In contrast, rival KT Corp. rose to become the highest-valued telecom brand, climbing to 27th place with 872.9 points in the second quarter, up from 41st place three months earlier. LG Uplus Corp. came in 46th, narrowing the gap with former telecom leader SK Telecom. The brand reshuffling came after SK Telecom suffered a data breach in April, in which sensitive universal subscriber identity module data was potentially leaked during an unidentified cyberattack on the company's servers. "Brand value has recently become more volatile, as it is increasingly influenced by various external issues," Brandstock said. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy smartphone brand retained the No. 1 spot on the BSTI, followed by the messaging app KakaoTalk and KB Kookmin Bank. (Yonhap)

SK Telecom to resume new subscriptions after completion of USIM replacement

Seoul : The Ministry of Science and ICT here said on Monday it will lift a ban on new subscription sales by SK Telecom Co., following the mobile carrier's completion of universal subscriber identity module (USIM) replacements for its entire user base of 25 million. SK Telecom is allowed to resume new subscription services starting Tuesday, the ministry added, reports Yonhap news agency. The move comes about two months after the government suspended new subscriptions due to a data breach , in which sensitive USIM data may have been leaked during an unidentified cyberattack on the company's servers. The suspension remained in place while SK Telecom carried out a large-scale USIM replacement effort. "SK Telecom has secured a sufficient supply of USIM chips, and its USIM booking system is operating smoothly," the ministry said. "We lifted the ban as the goal of our administrative guidance has been achieved." However, the ministry instructed SK Telecom to continue prioritizing USIM replacement requests from users. SK Telecom said new subscriptions will be available at its 2,600 T World retail stores starting Tuesday. "We will provide services to new subscribers without interruption in close collaboration with our nationwide distribution network," the company said in a statement. "We will also continue supporting customers who wish to replace their USIM cards due to the security breach." SK Telecom began offering free USIM card replacements in late April to all of its subscribers, including 2 million budget phone users, to prevent potential identity theft or financial fraud following the data breach. The South Korean government had issued an administrative guidance demanding the company suspend new subscriptions at its retail stores nationwide until the replacement process is completed. As the replacement neared completion, SK Telecom resumed limited new subscriptions using embedded SIMs (eSIMs) last week, according to the report.

SK, AWS to build S. Korea's largest AI data center

SK Group, a South Korean chip-to-construction conglomerate, said Monday it plans to build the country's largest artificial intelligence data center in partnership with Amazon Web Services, Inc. The two companies are expected to launch the project later this month and hold a groundbreaking ceremony in August, according to industry sources. "They have been working on the project, but the exact timeline and other details have yet to be finalized," an SK Group spokesperson said. The facility will be located in the Mipo industrial complex in Ulsan, 305 kilometers southeast of Seoul. It will house 60,000 graphics processing units and have a power capacity of 100 megawatts, making it the country's first AI infrastructure of such scale, the sources said. Ryu Young-sang, chief executive officer of SK Telecom Co., had announced the company's plan to build a hyperscale AI data center equipped with 60,000 GPUs in collaboration with a global tech partner, during the Mobile World Congress 2025 held in Spain in March. SK Telecom plans to invest 3.4 trillion won ($2.49 billion) in AI infrastructure by 2028, with a significant portion expected to be allocated to the data center project. AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon, provides on-demand cloud computing platforms and application programming interfaces to individuals, businesses and governments on a pay-per-use basis. (Yonhap)

SK Telecom to resume new eSIM-based subscriptions after data breach

SK Telecom Co., South Korea's leading mobile carrier, is set to partially resume new subscription services limited to eSIM starting later this week, following a recent large-scale data breach, industry sources said on Sunday. New subscriptions, which had been suspended nationwide, will resume at its retail stores starting Monday morning, according to the sources. The breach, first detected on April 18, involved the unauthorised exposure of data linked to universal subscriber identity module (USIM) cards. In response, SK Telecom has been replacing affected customers' USIM cards free of charge to prevent potential identity theft or financial fraud, reports Yonhap news agency. Full resumption of new eSIM services is expected shortly after Friday, when the bulk of the USIM replacements are projected to be completed. The Ministry of Science and ICT previously said SK Telecom would be allowed to resume new service operations once the USIM replacements for affected customers were finalised. Industry officials noted that the decision to partially restart new subscriptions was influenced by the nearing completion of the replacement process. The breach, first detected on April 18, involved a significant leak of universal subscriber identity module (USIM) data. In response, SK Telecom has offered to replace the USIM cards of all affected subscribers free of charge, in an effort to prevent identity theft and financial fraud. Meanwhile, SK Group, South Korea's second-largest conglomerate by asset, held a strategic management meeting to review its ongoing business reorganisation and discuss future growth initiatives. SKMS, or SK Management System, is the group's core management philosophy, emphasising fundamental principles and operational efficiency. The rebalancing strategy centered on selection and concentration, organisational control and financial stability. As part of these efforts, the number of SK affiliates has decreased from 219 last year to 198 this year through the consolidation of overlapping business operations.
