Kerry school says goodbye to 112 years of experience

Deputy Principal Anne Lucey, Assistant Principal Judy O'Mahony and Assistant Principal Lucy O'Mahony said their final goodbyes to the Kerry school where they have much of their careers. The three teachers have in fact a combined service of 112 years to the school marking a significant contribution to the education of pupils in Killarney. The whole school community gathered to welcome the guests of honour, Anne, Judy and Lucy, along with members of their families, retired colleagues, and members of the school's parents' association. The sun shone out for the joyous celebration where a sea of red and grey flags, bunting, balloons and children's artwork greeted the guests. Children from Junior Infants to 6th Class sang out in harmony a personalised rendition of 'Congratulations and Celebrations' detailing special moments and highlights of the three teachers' careers who have undoubtedly left a lasting legacy in the school. Principal Alice Davern welcomed the large gathering in attendance and commended all three teachers who have taught the children of Killarney for more than 100 years. Addressing the three teachers she said they helped shape the minds of the pupils of Kerry. 'It was obvious to everyone that your care for the children meant that you appreciated their unique personalities, their talents, their personal history and any challenges that they may have faced. This enabled you to encourage and guide every child to flourish and reach their full potential in your different roles in mainstream and special education. "In shaping young minds while also inspiring and supporting colleagues along the way, we know that upholding the dignity of every child and adult in the school has been the guiding principle of your work.' She said it was fitting that the three colleagues and friends who shared many of life's milestones in parallel and began their careers side by side would complete their teaching days together in Holy Cross Mercy. During the day's celebrations members of the school's Student Council, under the leadership of Frances Arthur, performed a dramatic comedic sketch based on the school lives of Anne, Judy and Lucy and had the children and adults present laughing out loud. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more They paid tribute through their performance to Anne's role as Deputy Principal and Maths Coordinator in the school. They showcased Judy's role as Science Coordinator, Health & Safety Officer and SPHE Coordinator. The children relayed Lucy's role of school Music coordinator and choir director as well as her passion for our Green school. A heart-warming poem composed for the ceremony which was written in tribute to the popular trio by colleague Mairéad Kennedy and read by Edel Cronin. Pupils of the school who Anne, Judy and Lucy worked closely with presented them with books filled with the children's artwork and letterboxes filled with hundreds of handmade cards from all of the children in the school while members of the Parents Association presented the retiring teachers with beautiful flowers and tokens of their gratitude for their many years of service in the school. Principal Alice Davern finished, 'We know that you leave behind more than memories. Because today, we celebrate not just three remarkable teaching careers but the legacy of those who quietly transformed lives every single day. You leave behind a legacy that will be characterised by hope, humanity, and humour, which have been the hallmarks of your service and will leave an indelible mark. 'To Anne, Judy, and Lucy, —from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. May your days ahead be as rich and rewarding as the years that you have so generously given to others.'

Children's Ombudsman received 371 complaints last year as part of 'campaign' against SPHE syllabus

THE OMBUDSMAN FOR Children's Office received 371 complaints last year regarding the SPHE syllabus. The Office said the complaints were made as part of a 'campaign' regarding the SPHE syllabus. The figures are contained in the Office's annual report for 2024. The SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education) curriculum has been the target of disinformation campaigns. Last year, the Department of Education acknowledged that it was aware of a YouTube video that claimed 'disturbing' practices would be introduced to Irish classrooms as part of the SPHE syllabus. 'It is understood that a video has been circulating suggesting that teachers will be expected to introduce certain explicit and inappropriate topics and materials in the classroom,' read the Department memo last October. 'The Department of Education and DCU have confirmed this is categorically not the case.' The memo also dismissed as 'false' a suggestion in the video that teachers would be expected to teach or introduce pornography or explicit topics. It said that the curriculum 'categorically does not expose children to graphic or explicit content' and does not normalise the use of pornography among secondary school students. The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, acknowledged that there was a 'period of time in which there was a lot of misinformation in relation to the SPHE curriculum'. 'We got a series of complaints which looked for us to investigate the content of the curriculum, which is not part of our remit, so we couldn't look into it at that stage,' he told RTÉ's Morning Ireland. Meanwhile, the Office received some 1,772 contacts in relation to complaints last year, almost identical to the number of complaints received the year previous. However, the Office said that the there is an 'increase in the complexity of the complaints being made'. The Office said that 16% of complaints related to more than one agency, while 33% included multiple categories of concern. Some 33% of complaints related to education and the most complained about issue within education were special educational supports, bullying and complaints management within schools. Some 19% of complaints were also aimed at Tusla and related to children in residential and special care, access to interventions and supports, and concerns from young people about complaint handling. And while not counted as complaints to the Office, there was an 88% rise in Child Protection and Welfare concerns received in 2024 compared to the previous year, with the figure jumping to 140. Complaints resolution Elsewhere, the Office said it encourages 'local resolution of complaints' that 'usually result in quick wins'. One such 'quick win' related to a complaint from a student who had Cerebral Palsy and only had the use of her left hand. She applied to use a voice-to-text device for the Leaving Cert but was refused. Her parents wrote to the State Examinations Commission (SEC) but never got a response. The Office contacted the SEC, which then granted the use of the device and the issue was resolved days before the exam started. But some cases take longer to resolve, such as that of a six-year-old who was 'locked in a side room off the main classroom when he had become disruptive'. The student was in an autism spectrum disorder class in a mainstream school, said the Office. His mother complained to the school's Board of Management but was left 'deeply unhappy with how her complaint was responded to by the Board'. She contacted the Children's Ombudsman and when the Office became involved in the case, the school's Board of Management (BOM) acknowledged that 'their approach to managing the complaint fell below standard'. 'They confirmed that a letter of complaint was not read aloud to the BOM, and they took the word of the principal that the matters were being dealt with accordingly,' said the Office's report. 'They acknowledged they were a relatively new BOM with a new chairperson and advised that they have since made changes to their practice.' The school then provided extra supports to the student and the Office was 'assured that such seclusion practice is no longer in place'. The school also apologised to the student and his mother 'for their poor handling of the complaint and any impact that the seclusion may have had on his integration into the school community'. The Ombudsman for Children's Office was established in 2004 to protect and promote the rights of children in Ireland. The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, remarked that 'in the current climate of uncertainty and change, it is more important than ever for the State to bed down its commitment on children's rights'. 'Ireland is now at a crossroads of what can be achieved for children and this Office will continue to push for the rights of children to be the signpost that is followed at all times,' said Muldoon. Computer game to spot the signs of online grooming to be rolled out in schools next term

A new computer game designed to spot the key signs of online grooming is being developed for roll-out for in-class teaching. The game is being designed under the Grosafe project in a partnership between the ISPCC and TU (Technological University) Dublin, funded by Research Ireland. It has been trialed in a small number of schools and the current phase of development is set to be completed by September. Fiona Jennings, ISPCC Head of Policy and Public Affairs, said the project is specially focused on 'how children and young people are groomed into criminality or for sexual exploitation purposes'. She explained: 'At the moment, by the end of this phase which will be around September, we are hoping that we will have further enhancements done to the digital game which we are trying to align with the SPHE outcomes as well for post primary schools.' She said the game will be made available free to schools, enabling teachers to use it in their SPHE classes. Ms Jennings said: 'We have been part of this research project since June 2023 and what we are trying to develop out of that is an in-classroom digital game through which children and young people will be offered education in terms of how to spot red flags for grooming. 'We have done brilliant school trials and co-created it with children and young people and they have been really receptive to that in terms of sharing their thoughts and ideas with us of how to create it.' She said the game will feature a reporting and chatbot function. She added: 'We are also developing a knowledge management system which I think will be really, really crucial. "What we have found from our stake holder engagement - we interviewed people on the frontline, frontline practitioners, State organisations, academics – is that one of the recurring things that kept coming up was how people struggle to identify what grooming behaviour looks like and if they do identify it, they don't know what to do with that. "So the knowledge management system would allow for practitioners to be able to log or upload some examples to help build a national picture as to what grooming in Ireland is like.' She pointed to the DRIVE project set up through the drugs taskforces and the Health Research Board around the issue of drug-related intimidation. Ms Jennings said: 'Drug-related intimidation is also difficult to spot. It can often be the starting point for more harmful things downstream, just like grooming for sexual exploitation which can be the starting point for much worse harm later on. "Often you'll hear from the testimony of children and young people who have been groomed that they were not able to recognise the signs. When we hear those stories, there are so many missed opportunities along the way for intervention.' She said that education is an important tool in helping children and young people stay protected from grooming, adding: 'Children learn well through gaming, including really complex ideas. For years, our Stay Safe programmes in schools have all been about stranger danger whereas we know now that children and young people are more than likely to be abused by someone they know within their own community.'
