FLASHBACK: Zohran Mamdani pledged to 'disband' key police unit that handles mass shootings
As New York City reels from a deadly mass shooting in midtown Manhattan that killed four, including an NYPD officer, the Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani is getting renewed attention for a recent pledge to eliminate a key police department responsible for riots, civil disorder and shootings. Mamdani, who is currently in Uganda celebrating his wedding, has previously called to defund the police, though as a mayoral candidate, he has taken a much more subdued tone regarding policing. However, while already a candidate for mayor, Mamdani pledged on X in December 2024 to "disband" the New York Police Department's Strategic Response Group (SRG). The SRG is one of the NYPD's special operations units, which, according to the force's official website, specializes in disorder response, crime suppression and crowd control and "responds to citywide mobilizations, civil disorders, and major events with highly trained personnel and specialized equipment." The website also says that SRG personnel are "also deployed to areas requiring an increased police presence due to increased crime or other conditions" and "mobilizes for shootings, bank robberies, missing persons, demonstrations, or other significant incidents." In December, Mamdani claimed that the NYPD had deployed the SRG to "harass + arrest striking @teamsters." Mamdani pledged: "As Mayor, I will disband the SRG, which has cost taxpayers millions in lawsuit settlements + brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their first amendment rights." In response to the shooting, Mamdani has said, "I'm heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts." He also noted he is "grateful for all of our first responders on the ground." On Monday, a lone gunman, later identified as Shane Tamura, walked into a midtown Manhattan office building and opened fire, killing four people before turning the gun on himself. The four people killed in the shooting were identified as NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but the gunman reportedly had a grievance with the NFL, blaming the sport of football for apparent issues with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a side effect from repeated hits to the head. In response to the tragedy, Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent, announced Tuesday that "as a mark of respect for the memory of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam who died in the line of duty and the multiple victims of the mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan at 345 Park Avenue yesterday, I've ordered all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-staff until further notice." "Officer Didarul Islam died as he lived, a hero and protector of New York City. We will never forget you," Adams wrote in another post on X. Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani's campaign for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Zohran Mamdani is planning to axe the elite NYPD taskforce that responded to NYC shooting
Socialist mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani is planning to axe an elite NYPD task force that charged into a Park Avenue building during Monday's deadly mass shooting if he takes over City Hall — despite expressing how 'grateful' he was for the first responders after the attack. The far-left Queens assemblyman, who shockingly nabbed the Democratic nomination last month, vowed to disband the police department's Strategic Response Group, SRG, on social media in December 2024. 5 Mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani vowed to disband the SRG if elected Mayor. Getty Images Advertisement 'As Mayor, I will disband the SRG, which has cost taxpayers millions in lawsuit settlements and brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their First Amendment rights,' he wrote just two months after announcing his candidacy for mayor. The SRG is a special operations division of the NYPD that responds to citywide mobilizations, civil disorders and major events. They also mobilize for emergency events like shootings and bank robberies, according to the NYPD's website. Mamdani has faced a spate of criticisms for his past smears of the NYPD, which include social posts from 2020 when he called to 'Defund the Police' in the wake of the George Floyd protests that swept the nation. Advertisement Hours after gunman Shane Tamura's horrific rampage rampage that left four dead, including an off-duty NYPD police officer – Mamdani responded that he was 'heartbroken' over the 'horrific shooting.' 'I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts,' he wrote. 'Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground.' But among those first at the scene were the members of the SRG, who then stormed into the building to ensure the shooter had been contained. 'He's a joke,' one cop source griped of the mayoral frontrunner. 'He only wants to ban SRG because they are the ones responding to his people's protests.' Advertisement US Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-21) continued to pile on, resurfacing one of Mamdani's defund the police posts. 'Flashback: Kathy Hochul's very own Commie Mamdani. A disgrace and truly unfit to be Mayor of NYC,' she wrote when sharing Mamdani's anti-cop message. 'We don't need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety. What we need is to #DefundTheNYPD,' his post read. Gov. Kathy Hochul – who called for uniform gun laws across all states following the shooting – clapped back at Stefanik's comments in a Tuesday interview with CNN. Advertisement 5 The SRG was among the first NYPD groups to respond to Monday's horrific massacre. Robert Miller 'Seriously going after an unelected official who said something back in 2020?' Hochul quipped. 'Come on, give me a break. Ask her the question. What are you doing to make your constituents safe?' she said. In a separate post on Tuesday morning, Mamdani honored the life of the fallen off-duty police officer, 36-year-old father of two, Didarul Islam. 'When he joined the police department, his mother asked him why he would pursue such a dangerous job. He told her it was to leave behind a legacy that his family could be proud of,' Mamdani's tribute read. 'He's done that and more. I pray for him, his family and honor the legacy of service and sacrifice he leaves behind,' he wrote. 5 Among those killed were off-duty police officer Didarul Islam. NYPD Democratic political operative and longtime police union advisor Ken Frydman slammed his party's mayoral candidate over the 'hypocritical' response. Advertisement 'Mamdani is hypocritical and irony-deficient. He can't say he's 'heartbroken' over the Midtown mass shooting and praise first responders while calling for disbanding the Strategic Response Group,' Frydman argued. New York State Conservative Party chairman Gerard Kassar echoed his concerns and issued a stark warning to New Yorkers about Mamdani's anti-police rhetoric in the wake of Monday's terror. 5 Chilling images show the shooter walking across the plaza of 345 Park Avenue during rush hour. Obtained by NY Post 'New Yorkers need to seriously ponder who their next mayor will be. They need to think long and hard about potentially electing an unabashed anti-cop candidate in Zohran Mamdani,' Kassar said. Advertisement 'If Mr. Mamdani were elected, he would have direct control over the NYPD – an agency he publicly despises,' Kassar added. 'That cannot work in a city like New York.' Other lefty politicians and Mamdani allies have echoed his calls against the SRG including social media maven and Bed-Stuy council member Chi Ossé — who introduced a bill in January that would prohibit the SRG from attending protests or 'first-amendment events.' The bill has garnered support from 24 Dem sponsors on the council, including Brooklyn Councilwoman Crystal Hudson. Mamdani's spokesperson did not respond to multiple requests for comment on whether he stands by his vow to abolish the SRG.

Double victory for Selangor e-sports team
State awards outstanding performance of athletes THE Selangor Red Giants (SRG) e-sports team celebrated a landmark victory at the state's Sports Award ceremony, securing the Best Team accolade. Its co-founder Simon Lim Swee Teck was honoured with the prestigious Jury Award. This dual achievement signified a significant breakthrough for both the team and broader acceptance of e-sports within Selangor's dynamic sporting landscape. In an interview with StarMetro, Lim described the experience as 'surreal'. 'I've always dreamed of being an athlete or a coach, but I knew I didn't have the talent – not on the field, nor on the sidelines. So, to contribute as a leader in management instead means the world to me,' he said. The recognition for SRG, he said, was especially meaningful. 'Seeing the boys crowned Best Sports Team is a recognition of all the blood, sweat and sacrifices we've poured into this journey. 'We have always believed in doing things differently by building structure, instilling discipline and treating e-sports like a real sport. 'Yesterday, that belief was validated,' he said. Looking ahead, Lim said the team's next major goal was to go global. 'My dream has always been to bring the Selangor name to the world stage. Whether it's through international tournaments, exporting talent or forging collaborations, we are setting our sights beyond local dominance. 'We're not just building a winning team, we are laying the blueprint for a lasting legacy.' Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who presented the awards, said the Selangor Sports Awards ceremony was held to honour individuals and teams who have demonstrated commitment, dedication and outstanding performance whether at the state, national or international level. 'We are proud that our female athlete Nor Farah Ain Abdullah was chosen for the national award. 'Tower runner Soh Wai Ching's achievements are not only impressive but also serve as motivation for other athletes.' The 2024 edition of the Selangor Sports Awards took place at Dewan Jubli Perak, Bangunan Sultan Salahudin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam. It featured eight categories: Best Male Athlete, Best Female Athlete, Most Promising Male Athlete, Most Promising Female Athlete, Best Team, Best Coach, Jury Award and the Leadership Icon Award. Winners of the Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete each received a trophy and RM10,000 in prize money. The Most Promising Male and Most Promising Female Athletes received a trophy and RM5,000 each. The Best Team category came with RM10,000, while the Best Coach, Leadership Icon and Jury Award recipients each took home RM5,000. Tey Hong Yu (table tennis) was named Most Promising Male Athlete, while Khew Zi Xian (aquatics) won Most Promising Female Athlete. Mohd Ariffin Abd Ghani (lawn bowls) was awarded Best Coach, and Datuk Haris Kasim received the Leadership Icon Award. Soh, who was named Best Male Athlete, said the award meant a great deal to him. 'I was honestly touched. I didn't expect it. 'I may have missed out on the National Sports Awards, but it's okay, this recognition from the state is something I'll never forget.' Soh is currently preparing for a Guinness World Record attempt in July. 'The target is 1.710km on a stair-climbing machine and it is the equivalent of climbing four PETRONAS Twin Towers stacked on top of each other. The current record is 1.704km.' He will also compete in the SkyRace at Merdeka 118 on Aug 30 – the world's biggest tower running event this year and host of Asian-Oceania Championship. Nor Farah, current world No.1 lawn bowler, was named the state's Best Female Athlete, a win she said came as a surprise. 'It's truly an honour. I didn't expect it, especially with so many top female athletes across other sports.' She has also received the Best National Female Athlete prize at the recent National Sports Award ceremony and is the first lawn bowler to receive such recognition. Also present at the state awards were Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi and Selangor Sports Council executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi.

Investors in SRG Global (ASX:SRG) have seen fantastic returns of 728% over the past five years
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. To wit, the SRG Global Limited (ASX:SRG) share price has soared 554% over five years. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. In more good news, the share price has risen 17% in thirty days. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance! Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns. This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality. While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Over half a decade, SRG Global managed to grow its earnings per share at 35% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 46% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail). We know that SRG Global has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? This free report showing analyst revenue forecasts should help you figure out if the EPS growth can be sustained. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for SRG Global the TSR over the last 5 years was 728%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return. It's nice to see that SRG Global shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 77% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 53% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand SRG Global better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with SRG Global . We will like SRG Global better if we see some big insider buys.
