Brace from Amond helps dominant Waterford to win over Galway United
SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Galway Utd 2 (Walsh 59', McGuinness 74') Waterford 4 (Noonan 31', Amond 47', 77' (P), Leahy 72') On a night of consequence at the bottom of the table, Waterford asserted their dominance. After beating Cork in the RSC, they dispatched Galway United on their own turf, putting four past a once mean defence. The critical blow came after the restart. A routine ball over the top caused paralysis in the United defence. Pádraig Amond glided through and finished with coolness and class. In the past, United dictated the terms against Waterford and impose their physicality. This time, Waterford went on the front foot, encouraging Conan Noonan, Amond and Tommy Lonergan forward at every chance. The interplay of the three allowed for Noonan to fashion some space and drill home from the edge of the box in the 30th minute. Their positivity yielded other big chances in the first. Waterford were quick and crafty on the break. Amond was played clean through at one point, but Evan Watts saved brightly. The 'keeper had earlier spilled a cross, but the Blues couldn't convert. There was some drama at the Clubhouse End too as United got to grips with the game. Stephen McMullan scrambled to save an Aaron Bolger lob. There was a decent penalty shout too waved away. The 'keeper saved a Rob Slevin header comfortably too. A couple of substitutions at half-time indicated that all wasn't well on the home front. David Hurley and Dara McGuinness made some impact, but it was veteran striker Stephen Walsh who hauled them back into the contest. There was then a flurry of goals, three in six minutes. Bolger turned one into his own net after a Noonan cross. Debutant McGuiness pulled one back at the other end. The decisive intervention came when Alan Patchell gave a debatable penalty to the visitors. Amond scored to restore order. It was little more than his side deserved and sufficient for them to see it out.

Rampant Derry put seven past Waterford
SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Derry City 7 (Boyce 5', 24', 57' Diallo 36', Connolly 41', Duffy 52', Whyte 73') Waterford 2 (Amond 49', 79') LIAM Boyce netted a hat-trick as a rampant Derry City thumped seven past a stunned Waterford United at Brandywell. The 34-year-old former Hearts man took his season tally to eight goals with his contribution on a night Derry closed the gap on leaders Shamrock Rovers to eight points with a game in hand. Boyce became the first Derry player to score a hat-trick since Pat Hoban's treble against Waterford in March 2024. The Belfast man netted twice in the opening 24 minutes but his brace was overshadowed by Sadou Diallo's goal of the season contender which crashed off the underside of the crossbar before nestling into the net. Skipper Mark Connolly headed in a fourth just before half-time and while Padraig Amond scored twice in the second half, a third goal from Boyce, and a goal apiece from the sensational Michael Duffy and equally impressive Gavin Whyte sealed Derry's biggest win of the season. Derry hit the front after five minutes following a sweeping move finished by Liam Boyce who rifled his shot into the middle of the goal. Another swift attack from Derry opened up the Waterford defence as White and Ronan Boyce linked up on the right and the latter crossed towards the front post where Liam Boyce's strike was turned behind by a timely tackle from Andy Boyle. The Candystripes doubled their advantage on 25 minutes when Duffy raced down the left wing and found Liam Boyce lurking on the penalty spot. The striker fired into the net despite the best efforts of Wade. Derry were threatening to run riot and added a third with a thunderbolt from Diallo. The midfielder's strike from 30 yards crashed off the underside of the crossbar and nestled into the net. Wade again saved from Duffy's long range effort before skipper Connolly's glancing header which beat Wade at the back post - the Monaghan man's first goal since victory over Waterford in June last season. The small band of travelling support at last had something to cheer about five minutes into the second half when Amond dribbled into the penalty area and slotted clinically past Maher for his ninth goal of the season. Whyte's inch perfect crossfield pass found the run of Duffy who turned Darragh Leahy before firing past Wade with his left foot. Derry's sixth came on 57 minutes as he picked out the run of Liam Boyce who poked the ball home at the front post for his hat-trick. Whyte's sensational performance was just lacking a goal and it arrived on 73 minutes when Duffy found him lurking on the edge of the box and he fired the ball into the bottom corner. Amond netted his second and a consolation strike for Waterford who capitalised from a quick throw-in with 10 minutes to go.

Life after Duff begins for Shels as Woods brace ensures share of the spoils with Waterford
SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Waterford 2 (Horton 8', Amond 48') Shelbourne (Wood 3', 49') Harry Wood scored a brace as life after Damien Duff began with a share of the spoils for Shelbourne after a titanic battle with Waterford FC in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division at the RSC. The man who gave Duff his finest moment at Shels with the winner that won them the league title against Derry last season popped up with an equalising goal seconds after Padraig Amond had put the hosts in front early in the second-half. A whirlwind 36 hours for the Tolka Park club saw Joey O'Brien take over as interim manager and he was on the edge of the touchline like his predecessor, dishing out the orders as a dramatic start to both halves was the tale of this encounter, but he could have been celebrating seven minutes into added time. O'Brien proclaimed in his post-match interview that it was a 'mad 24 hours' and that the players were 'shocked' by Duff's departure early on Sunday morning, but that his players were 'paid professionals', and it was Daniel Kelly who nearly won him his first game in the hotseat only to rattle the bar. Life after their former manager was only three minutes old when they struck the front. Tyreke Wilson found space for himself down the left before putting in a ball that saw Mipo Adubeko get the slightest of touches that took the ball into the path of Wood at the back post, and he squeezed the ball past keeper Stephen McMullan. The madness continued on the field of play five minutes later as Shels gifted their hosts an equalising goal. McMullan's long clearance was touched back to Kameron Ledwidge, who was on his knees when leaving a header back to Conor Kearns short as Grant Horton nipped in between defender and keeper to finish to an empty net. An incredible start to the first-half was bettered by a kamikaze start to the second. Within three minutes, the champions were the cause of their own downfall again as they fell behind. Paddy Barrett's clearance off Conan Noonan saw his shot parried by Conor Kearns, but Padraig Amond was on hand to finish the rebound from close-range. Sixty seconds later, and Joey O'Brien was celebrating an equaliser. Mark Coyle raced through the heart of the Waterford middle unchallenged before spraying the ball out for Ali Coote, who put in a teasing delivery, and Wood was on hand to touch home. There was time for more drama in the seventh added minute of five as the impressive Wood burst from midfield to slip the ball out wide right for Daniel Kelly, who let fly with a thunderous strike, but his effort came crashing back off the crossbar with McMullan beaten to the sound of the final whistle. Waterford FC: McMullan; Horton (McCormack 84), McDonald (White 84), Leahy, Burke, Dempsey (Boyle 62); Lonergan, Olayinka, Glenfield (McMenamy 72), Noonan; Amond. Shelbourne FC: Kearns; Gannon, Barrett, Wilson (Norris 62), Ledwidge; Lunney, Wood, Coyle (Chapman 74), Coote (Boyd 74); Adubeko (Martin 86), Caffrey (Kelly 62). Referee: Declan Toland (Athlone)

Late Daniels goal rescues point for Cork City against Drogheda
SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Cork City 1 (Daniels 90+6') Drogheda 1 (Farrell 12') Djenairo Daniels rescued a 96th-minute point for relegation-threatened Cork City as Drogheda United failed to hold out at Turner's Cross. But Seani Maguire headed over from four yards in the eighth added minute as Ger Nash's side couldn't snap their 10-game winless streak. Sligo Rovers' win saw them fall four points away from the relegation play-off berth in front of 1,815 fans. A week since their expulsion from the UEFA Conference League was confirmed, Drogs hoped to rebuild their European dreams with back-to-back wins. But Shane Farrell's fantastic free-kick wasn't enough as they dropped to third. Earlier on Monday, City announced the signing of Rory Feely from Crawley Town for an undisclosed fee. Like Colchester United recruit Fiacre Kelleher, the ex-Bohs defender will be available to play from the start of July. That duo are urgently required as City failed again to keep a first clean sheet of the season. Nash made four changes from Friday's 4-1 defeat to Shamrock Rovers. He recalled captain Charlie Lyons, Maguire, Seán Murray, and Matthew Kiernan, who recently completed his Leaving Cert. Cathal O'Sullivan, Evan McLaughlin, Malik Dijksteel, and Josh Fitzpatrick dropped to the bench. City mirrored Drogs' 3-5-2 formation and started in spirited fashion. But it was the visitors celebrating in the 12th minute. Milan Mbeng wasn't happy as referee Alan Patchell penalised him for fouling Ryan Brennan under a dropping ball. Shane Farrell stepped up and unleashed a sublime 25-yard curler over the wall, which clipped off the post on its way to the net. City are quickly becoming the 24-year-old's favourite opposition as both his goals this season have come against the Leesiders. That would be Drogs' only shot of the half. In their customary style, Doherty's side were happy to soak up pressure as City held 74% of possession. Djenairo Daniels had a header in front of goal, but didn't connect properly. Greg Bolger's corners led to a couple more aerial attempts. Darragh Crowley couldn't turn the ball back towards the target, while Lyons didn't threaten with his effort. In between, Crowley's brilliant floated pass over the cover found Maguire, who guided his looping header wide. Nash called on O'Sullivan at half-time in an attack-minded move. The teenage talent fired high and wide with his first attempt. City continued to struggle to translate control into shots on target. From a botched Drogheda clearance, Maguire got the ball stuck in his feet, and Daniels couldn't generate power on the eventual header. When a defensive mix-up handed Drogs a counter-attack opportunity, Kitt Nelson raced back to foil Douglas James-Taylor. The No.10 got another bite of the cherry moments later from Freddie Anderson's poor touch. Tein Troost reacted sharply to save his defender's blushes by parrying over the crossbar. O'Sullivan had a pair of shots blocked before teeing up Rio Shipston, who sidefooted over with the best chance of the half. Shipston's quality cross invited a Maguire header straight at Luke Dennison. It looked like City had run out of time until Fitzpatrick's cross was met by Daniels' bullet header for his fifth goal of the season. Then, Mbeng fizzed a ball across for Maguire, who diverted over the bar. CORK CITY: Troost; Crowley (O'Sullivan 46), Anderson, Lyons; Mbeng, S Murray (Shipston 64), Nelson (Dijksteel 77), Bolger (McLaughlin 68), Kiernan (Fitzpatrick 68); Maguire, Daniels. DROGHEDA UNITED: Dennison; Cooper (Harper-Bailey 8), Keeley, Quinn; Lambe, Brennan (Markey 67), Farrell, Heeney, Kane; James-Taylor, Davis (Oluwa 78). Referee: A Patchell (Dublin).
