Rath Yatra passes peacefully, pays tribute to plane crash victims
Vadodara: A sea of devotees turned up to attend the Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra in the city on Friday afternoon. Police had deployed tight security along the yatra's route, which began from Sayajigunj and passed through Kothi Crossroads, Raopura and Nyay Mandir before ending near the Polo Ground. Thousands of policemen, including senior police officers, ensured that the procession went off smoothly. City police commissioner Narasimha Komar was also present at the procession. This year, the ISKCON Temple tempered down the celebrations due to the Ahmedabad plane crash. No firecrackers were burst, and the usual elaborate procession was reduced to a few vehicles. Additionally, devotees observed two minutes of silence to pay tribute to the victims. Apart from the body-worn cameras that were recording all the happenings, drones were also deployed on the route of the yatra. - Cop dies of heart attack on duty A 38-year-old policeman deployed for Rath Yatra security reportedly died of a heart attack on Friday. Naresh Rathwa, who was from Chhota Udepur, had been posted at Harni police station. He was deployed for the yatra's security in Raopura on Friday, when he suddenly complained of restlessness and started vomiting. He was rushed to SSG Hospital, where he died during treatment.

Drunk man runs over villager with tractor in Panchmahal; booked for murder
Vadodara: A 42-year-old man died and two others were injured after a tractor driven by an allegedly inebriated man ran over them in Dhamai village of Shehra taluka on Thursday night. The accused, Dilipsinh Patel, was arrested after a case of murder was registered against him at Shehra police station. A ccording to the complaint filed by Pravin Baria, a sarpanch candidate in the upcoming village election, the incident was not related to any political conflict. Pravin stated that he was sitting with several men outside his uncle Laxmansinh Baria's residence when Dilipsinh arrived on a tractor. Though known to the group and belonging to the same locality, Dilipsinh unexpectedly accelerated the tractor instead of dismounting to join them. While most managed to get out of the way, three people were caught in the vehicle's path. Hasmukh Patel (42) was critically injured after being run over by the tractor, while Gulabsinh Patel and Kirit Patel sustained minor injuries. Hasmukh was rushed first to a hospital in Godhra and then shifted to SSG Hospital in Vadodara, where he succumbed to his injuries later that night. Police registered a murder case against Dilipsinh, who was subsequently taken into custody.

4-year-old killed in toy train accident at Kamatibaug
Vadodara: A four-year-old girl died after being run over by the toy train at the Sayajibaug garden — better known as Kamatibaug — here on Saturday evening. The girl's parents, residents of Jambusar in Bharuch district, had taken her to the garden to spend time there. The accident occurred at about 5.30pm when the train was near its 'station'. The girl, Khatija Parvez Pathan, came under the wheels of the train and is believed to have died on the spot. She was rushed to SSG Hospital where she was declared dead. The garden is managed by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), which has given a contract to a private company, Khodal Corporation, to run the toy train, also called the Joy Train. The train runs on a 3.5km track inside the garden. "The girl moved towards the train and came under it," he said. He added that CCTV footage will reveal further details. City police officers, including deputy commissioner of police Julie Kothiya, rushed to the garden after the accident. Kothiya said Sayajigunj police will investigate the matter. She said CCTV footage was being examined, and police are trying to find eyewitnesses. On allegations of the train being driven recklessly, she said these will also be investigated. This is the second time the train has injured a visitor to the garden in two years. In Oct 2023, a woman was injured when her burqa got entangled in the guard of the train's engine. She fell and her arm came under the train wheels. Her hand was amputated a couple of days later.

Key appointments made in Gujarat's medical colleges
Ahmedabad: The health department has announced key appointments in state's medical colleges and hospitals. Dr Meenakshi Parikh, director of postgraduate (PG) studies, has been given additional responsibility of dean, BJ Medical College. Dr Dharmesh Patel, professor of forensic medicine and additional dean at the college, has been given the additional charge of PG director. The current administrative structure reveals a pattern of managing essential positions through temporary arrangements instead of permanent postings. Reports indicate this practice extends to medical colleges and hospitals in Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and other cities. At Vadodara, Dr R G Iyer, the current dean at SSG Hospital, has been given the additional duty of the hospital's medical superintendent. Similar interim arrangements are in place for Paraplegia Institute and Civil Hospital. Healthcare professionals have raised concerns regarding temporary appointments in crucial positions, noting their potential impact on administrative decisions. Meanwhile, Dr Haribhai R Kataria, dean of the faculty of science at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has been appointed the vice-chancellor of Shri Guru Gobind University, Godhra. His five-year tenure commences from his joining date, as specified in the Gujarat Public Universities Act, 2023. This follows the one-year extension granted to former vice-chancellor, Pratapsinh Chauhan.
