DRDO inaugurates Quantum Technology Research Centre at Metcalfe House

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) inaugurated the Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) at Metcalfe House, Delhi, on Tuesday. The facility was inaugurated by the Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, to further strengthen Indigenous quantum capabilities for strategic and defence applications. QRTC is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental setups designed to propel research and development in critical quantum domains. The key capabilities of this centre include Characterisation of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers and Distributed Feedback Lasers; Test-beds for evaluating single-photon sources; Set-up for characterisation of Micro-Fabricated Alkali Vapour Cell; and Experimental platforms for developing and validating Quantum Key Distribution techniques to enable ultra-secure communication and safeguard national security in the post-quantum era, spearheaded by Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), DRDO. Spearheaded by the Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), QTRC also focuses on foundational technologies, including an ultra-small atomic clock based on Coherent Population Trapping for highly precise timekeeping in Global Navigation Satellite System-denied environments, an atomic magnetometer using optically pumped magnetometry for ultra-sensitive magnetic field detection, and Cutting-edge solid-state quantum devices and materials. DRDO continues to lead India's quantum initiatives across verticals such as quantum sensing, secure communications, and post-quantum cryptography. As a key stakeholder in the National Quantum Mission, DRDO is committed to fostering indigenous innovation and developing sovereign quantum technologies to secure India's strategic future. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Director General (Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems & Cyber Systems) Suma Varughese, whose vision and leadership were instrumental in conceptualising this cutting-edge facility. DG (Resource & Management), Dr Manu Korulla, and the Directors of SSPL and SAG, senior scientists, and other dignitaries attended the function.

Alexander-Arnold's tearful farewell after 20 years at Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold was cheered by a celebratory Anfield on his final Liverpool appearance on Sunday, with the player dubbed 'the Scouser in our team' bowing out in tears after two decades at his boyhood club. The Liverpool vice-captain was booed by some Reds fans earlier this month in his first game after confirming that he was leaving at the end of this season, amid many reports that a move to Real Madrid was a done deal. But the 26-year-old was staunchly defended by teammates including Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, while former manager Juergen Klopp — who gave Alexander-Arnold his debut in 2016 — said he turned off his television when he heard the boos. It's been a rollercoaster for Trent 🥹🔴 #SSPL | #LIVCRY — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 25, 2025 The manner of Alexander-Arnold's departure, as a free agent and after some arguably mixed messages about his future, will still rankle with Liverpool supporters and he admitted to some trepidation. 'I didn't know what to expect stepping out at Anfield after what happened a few weeks ago, but I wanted to play for the club one more time,' he told Sky Sports. Alexander-Arnold's introduction at half time was met with excitement, though, and his desperation to sign off in style was evident. Had it not been for a poor effort by Darwin Nunez, he would have added another superb assist to his collection. Trent x Robbo They've scaled football's heights together 🤝🔴 #SSPL | #LIVCRY — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 25, 2025 He was in tears at the final whistle and seemed relieved to get yet more cheers when receiving his Premier League winners' medal, before he raised his arms aloft and thumped the Liverpool badge on what he said was 'the best day for me in my life'. 'The reception I got means the world to me, I have played hundreds of games but have never felt so loved and cared for,' Alexander-Arnold said. 'From the bottom of my heart I hope that one day the fans and supporters will recognise what I did for the team.' Liverpool boss Arne Slot was in agreement and hailed the fans' reception for Alexander-Arnold 'Maybe it also helped what an unbelievable half he played,' he said with a smile.

Arsenal relief as Declan Rice secures narrow win over Newcastle

Arsenal snapped a season-long jinx against Newcastle United with a nervy 1-0 win in their last Premier League home game on Sunday all but securing runners-up spot and a place in next season's Champions League. Three defeats against Eddie Howe's side during the campaign could easily have become four had the visitors converted a flurry of early chances, but Declan Rice calmed the nerves. Rice punished Newcastle for their first-half profligacy when he connected sweetly with Martin Odegaard's pass to rifle a curling effort past Nick Pope in the 55th minute. Arsenal, winless in their last three league games, were indebted to keeper David Raya in the first half as he made saves from Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Dan Burn as the visitors dominated. Whatever was said at halftime appeared to wake them from their lethargy though and with an away game to finish at bottom club Southampton next weekend a third successive second-placed finish looks guaranteed, albeit this time a distant one. The Gunners are not ready to give up that second spot 👀🔝 📺 Stream #ARSNEW on DStv: — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 18, 2025 Arsenal have 71 points from 37 games and only sixth-placed Manchester City, who have two games remaining, can match that. Newcastle remain in third place with 66 points but only one point separates them from seventh-placed Nottingham Forest as the battle for the other three Champions League spots will go down to the wire next Sunday. Arsenal's season promised so much but a League Cup semifinal defeat by Newcastle, a flimsy attempt to chase Liverpool in the title race and a Champions League semifinal exit against Paris St Germain meant their campaign fizzled out. They went into Sunday's game knowing victory would guarantee them a top-five finish and Champions League spot. Yet on the flipside one win in their last six league games had raised the unthinkable spectre of finishing sixth in what for most of the season looked like a two-horse title race. The Gunners all but seal a third straight second-place finish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🥈 #SSPL | #ARSNEW — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 18, 2025 The absence of Newcastle's prolific striker Alexander Isak because of a groin injury was a boost for Arsenal but they looked edgy, understandably considering they had not scored a goal in three games against Eddie Howe's side this season. Newcastle were all over them in the opening stages and only Raya prevented the visitors taking the lead. First the Spaniard denied Guimaraes and then Livramento should have done much better but shot too close to Raya. Arsenal invited Newcastle pressure and Barnes was allowed to run through unchallenged before his low shot was turned around the upright by the unsighted Raya. The pick of his first-half saves though was a reflex effort to palm away a towering header by Burn. Arsenal's attack lacked fluency and Nick Pope was not seriously tested in the opening period but the tension around the Emirates was lifted 10 minutes after the break. Martin Odegaard played the ball towards the midfielder and he swept a sublime first-time shot past Pope. It was Arsenal's 52nd shot against Newcastle this season and the first one that found the net. Newcastle were less threatening after the break but former Arsenal player Joe Willock did wriggle through but smashed an angled shot over the bar. Reuters
