Ahn Gyu-back, President Lee Jae Myung's nominee for defense minister, said the change would require "in-depth conversations with the U.S.," with the aim of having the transfer happen during the tenure of Lee, who started his five-year term in June.

South Korea wraps up talks toward potentially biggest-ever defense deal

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in a news release on Wednesday that Hyundai Rotem, a privately owned South Korean company, had concluded talks with Poland to supply K2 tanks. The agency did not disclose the size of the contract, but in a research report, Mirae Asset Securities valued it at $6.7 billion for the provision of 261 tanks.

The Korean War started on June 25, 1950, when Soviet-backed North Korean forces invaded the South. U.S. troops fought alongside the South and combat ceased three years later with the signing of a U.N.-brokered armistice agreement.

South Korea's new president agrees to strengthen ties with Tokyo
STEVEN BOROWIEC SEOUL -- South Korea's new president spoke by phone with his Japanese counterpart on Monday, agreeing to work toward stronger bilateral ties and three-way cooperation with their shared ally, the U.S. The office of President Lee Jae-myung said in a release that Lee had a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba that lasted around 25 minutes. In their talk, Lee and Ishiba agreed to work toward more "mature" bilateral relations "based on mutual respect and trust," Lee's office said.
