Resident complains as neighbour turns shoe rack into Shopee collection point
A Bedok resident has lodged a complaint after his neighbour converted a shared corridor space into a parcel collection point, allowing members of the public to pick up Shopee deliveries at all hours. These collections extend late into the night, causing repeated disturbances and raising safety concerns, said the resident. Kelvin Chen, 45, who has lived at Block 522 along Bedok North Avenue 1 for seven years, told Shin Min Daily News that he began having issues with his neighbour last year. "It used to be peaceful. But after one of their children moved out early last year, the situation began to change. They started placing more and more items outside their flat - even plants were placed on both sides of my doorway. I spoke to the lady of the house, and she eventually removed some of them," he said. Collections late into the night According to Mr Chen, the neighbour later repurposed a shoe cabinet outside their unit as a parcel collection station for Shopee deliveries, allowing members of the public to collect their packages. Photos provided by Mr Chen show a four-tier shoe rack that appears to be holding more than 20 parcels. "She mentioned it to me when she first started. As a neighbor, I agreed - as long as it didn't block access to my home or create any obstruction." However, the situation has escalated. Mr Chen said that people come by every day to pick up parcels, with collections extending late into the evening. He eventually reported the issue to the STOMP community platform. He said: "For Shopee parcels collections, it should be personally handed over, not by using a shoe rack as pigeonholes." Netizens weigh in On STOMP's website, some netizens agreed that the neighbour's actions were uncalled for: "My opinion is that this collection point owner is irresponsible to place the Shopee items outside the unit. Anyone can easily take these items and walk away." However, others suggested that the resident's reactions were exaggerated: "Is it really true that collection of parcels creates noise disturbance? Singaporeans complain too much about mundane matters that fall out of line." Others empathised with Mr Chen, acknowledging that the disturbance stems from the daily presence of strangers at his doorstep. Shopee: Temporarily paused operations at collection point In response to STOMP's queries, a Shopee spokesperson said on July 11: "We value the feedback and have temporarily paused operations at the collection point while we review the current set-up. "We are actively engaging the operator to explore improvements aligned with Shopee's guidelines, ensuring that parcel collections are managed safely and with due consideration for neighbouring residents. "Shopee remains committed to upholding responsible practices across all residential collection points." Town council: Items blocking corridor have been removed Addressing the issue of corridor obstructions, the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council confirmed that they have spoken to the resident involved. "The items blocking the corridor have been cleared," said a spokesman, adding that the town council continues to educate residents and conducts regular inspections to maintain cleanliness in common areas and prevent the buildup of clutter.

Resident counting down to town council's deadline for unclaimed PMDs at Segar Road void deck
A man is eagerly awaiting the day the personal mobility devices (PMDs) who park indiscriminately will be punished. PHOTO: STOMP Resident counting down to town council's deadline for unclaimed PMDs at Segar Road void deck A man is eagerly awaiting the day when personal mobility devices (PMD) users who park indiscriminately will be punished. Stomper W shared his grievances with dusty and abandoned PMDs cluttering the lift lobby of Block 470 Segar Road. Snapping photos and a video of the various PMDs at 2.29pm on June 26, he said: "This one was parked in the middle of everyone's access to the lift lobby for minutes. Your grandfather's corridor? "Look at the dust accumulated. More bicycles will be dumped as well." W hopes the PMD owners will be held accountable, saying: "We are finally coming to the final countdown of PMD public nuisance and public safety for everyone. Let's count together for safety." He also gave his advice to the PMD owners: "Sincerely and honestly, I do hope they get a more stable job, regarding their daily driving safety to themselves and for the sake of families or loved ones. "Yes, of course they have less income but at least the family will be less worried and have security in a stable job with medical welfare and coverage. "Personal safety cannot be compromised because you have a loving family behind you. "Furthermore, a secure job at least has CPF contributions permanently to control their finances, and they can't use the money to spend unwisely or instead to drink, smoke, gamble off." In response to a Stomp query, Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council said it is "aware of the situation and has been actively monitoring and addressing it." "Our property team previously issued advisories to the owner of a PMD (marked with purple and green patterns) that was obstructing the void deck. "While the device was initially relocated following our intervention, it has unfortunately reappeared in the same area. "In light of this, the town council will issue fresh advisories to the owners of all derelict items and PMDs left at the void deck, as these obstructions pose public safety and accessibility concerns for residents. "Unclaimed items will be removed by the town council on July 16. "Additionally, we will enhance our public education efforts, particularly targeting food delivery riders. "They will be reminded to dismount and park their devices in designated areas and to avoid leaving PMDs at lift lobbies, which hinder resident access and create safety hazards. "We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our residents as we work together to maintain a clean, safe, and pleasant living environment for all." Stomper W added: "Rest in peace, PMDs." View more photos in the gallery. Click here to contribute a story or submit it to our WhatsApp Get more of Stomp's latest updates by following us on:

Yishun resident finds tiny bat lying motionless in her kitchen balcony: 'Is it dead already?'
Yishun resident finds tiny bat lying motionless in her kitchen balcony: 'Is it dead already?' A woman was shocked to find a tiny motionless bat lying on the kitchen balcony railing of her Housing Board flat at Yishun Avenue 6. Fearful and unsure what to do, Stomper Susan contacted Nee Soon Town Council for help. "Scary," she said. When the town council staff member arrived and saw the grounded bat, he asked: "Is it dead already?" Susan explained that it was alive and had crawled across the railing. PHOTOS: STOMP This was the first time Susan had ever encountered a bat, and although she was afraid, she couldn't help but feel bad for it as she thought it was a baby. She told Stomp on May 21: "I hope the bat's mother can find it and get it back." According to Wildlife Rescue Centre Acres, there were more bat groundings reported in areas like Punggol, Sembawang, and Yishun in 2024. Stomp asked Ms Nicole Dorville, a PhD student from the Asian School of the Environment at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and co-founder of NTU Grounded Bat Surveys study. She confirmed that the bat was a Javan Pipistrelle, a common, small bat species. So although it looked like a baby, like Susan thought it was, it could have been an adult. The town council staff member used a plastic bag and a towel to pick it up gently. PHOTO: STOMP Ms Dorville explained that the towel helps avoid bites, and the plastic prevents exposure to germs. She advised the public against touching bats, even when encountering one that is grounded, and to call Acres' Wildlife Rescue Hotline (9783 7782) or NParks' Animal Response Centre (1800 476 1600) when encountering a grounded bat. She said: "It's not that the bat is angry or aggressive, it's more that people are not usually very careful." If you encounter a bat in your home, Acres' bat advisory notice advises turning off the lights and ceiling fans, and open windows and doors so it can exit safely.
