STRABAG wins contracts to modernise Czech railway infrastructure

STRABAG Rail has secured contracts worth around €360m ($421.7m), co-financed by the EU, to modernise select Czech railway infrastructure. The first awarded project involves upgrading a 10km section between Nezamyslice and Kojetín on the Brno-Přerov line for high-speed trains. The STRABAG subsidiary leads the consortium that is responsible for the upgrade, which includes double tracking and doubling line speed. The contract, valued at €110m, began this May and is set for completion by January 2029. A key feature of this project is a 744m-long twin-track tunnel near Němčice, being constructed using open-cut methods. A new junction at Hruška will increase line capacity, and two stops, Měrovice nad Hanou and Němčice nad Hanou, will be upgraded to barrier-free standards. The latter will include a new bus terminal. Along this route, 2,300m of noise barriers and new bridges will also be installed, with train movements monitored by European Train Control System and Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway systems. The second project focuses on modernising the Česká Třebová railway junction. This project includes 72km of track, overhead lines, and 30 bridge structures. Said to be the largest tender by the Czech Railway Administration, it will rebuild tracks for passenger and freight traffic and modernise platforms with new canopies and a pedestrian bridge. This project is anticipated to conclude in early 2032, and preparatory works will be conducted throughout this year. These include temporary signalling systems, the new Potok junction, and initial rail network sections. Main works at the passenger station are planned for 2028, with a new connecting line in Třebovice underway. STRABAG SE South + East Segment management board member Alfred Watzl said: 'These two prestigious projects allow STRABAG Rail to contribute its full expertise and longstanding experience in railway construction. 'Both play a strategic role in creating a modern, sustainable Czech railway infrastructure and in linking it to the trans-European transport network. Travellers can already look forward to greater comfort and shorter journey times.' Last month, the company reported a 38.7% increase in order intake for its transportation infrastructure construction segment. STRABAG finalises deal to acquireWTE Wassertechnik

European technology group STRABAG has finalised transaction documents and signed a purchase agreement to acquire WTE Wassertechnik. WTE Wassertechnik is an environmental service provider engaged in planning, financing, construction and operation of projects related to water supply, wastewater disposal, sustainable sewage sludge treatment and energy recovery. This move follows the December 2024 agreement between Strabag and EVN to acquire WTE. The acquisition is set to expand Strabag's water technology capabilities and aligns with its Strategy 2030 objectives. The purchase price for WTE shares totals €100m ($114.9m), with additional shareholder loans being assumed. The acquisition will enhance Strabag's portfolio in integrated water management, with the combined business expected to generate an annual output of €400m. Strabag SE's Supervisory Board has approved the acquisition, which is currently awaiting various regulatory clearances, including antitrust approval. The closing of the transaction is anticipated within the next six months. Strabag engages in planning, design, construction, operation and facility management, and demolition. With 86,000 employees and a network of subsidiaries across Europe and other continents, the company has already made notable progress in water technology this year. Projects include a water treatment plant in Croatia and the preferred bidder status for the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme in the UK. In a related development, Cologne-based subsidiary Strabag AG has acquired Sandkamp Tiefbau, a German pipeline construction company. This acquisition includes the integration of all 25 Sandkamp Tiefbau employees into the Strabag team in Nordhorn and Gronau. STRABAG AG acquires German pipeline construction company Sandkamp Tiefbau

Cologne-based STRABAG AG (Strabag) has announced the acquisition of Sandkamp Tiefbau, a pipeline construction company from Gronau, Germany. Financial specifics of the transaction, which has been in effect retroactively from 1 January 2025, were not shared. Strabag is a key player in Germany's construction industry and part of Austria's STRABAG SE. The company is known for its comprehensive services in the construction of transport infrastructure. This move is set to bolster Strabag's competitive stance in the pipeline construction sector for public utility providers. The acquisition is aimed at strengthening the company's regional market presence and customer relationships in Westmünsterland. According to a press release, the addition of Sandkamp Tiefbau, a certified family business with over a century of expertise in pipeline, cable, and sewer construction, will extend Strabag's team of specialists. In addition, the integration of Sandkamp's workforce is expected to facilitate closer collaboration with other units within STRABAG SE. All 25 Sandkamp Tiefbau employees will be integrated into the Strabag team, operating in Nordhorn and Gronau. Strabag's Nordhorn division has long been a specialist partner for public utilities. Strabag Nordhorn business unit commercial manager Dirk Jacobs said: "There is a lot to do in the region, so we are all the more pleased that we can further expand our business area with this acquisition and welcome new, highly committed colleagues to our ranks." Sandkamp Tiefbau owner Johannes Sandkamp said: "After many generations of ownership, it was essential to us to develop a long-term perspective for our company and our valued employees. I am delighted that we have found the ideal partner in the Nordhorn unit of Strabag and that our team is in safe hands for the future." ZÜBLIN acquires BAUER Spezialtiefbau's Austrian unit

STRABAG subsidiary ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau has acquired BAUER Spezialtiefbau (Austria) for an undisclosed amount. The deal enhances ZÜBLIN's foothold in the Austrian market. BAUER Spezialtiefbau (Austria) is the Austrian unit of Germany's BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, which forms part of the BAUER Group's Geotechnical Solutions segment. ZÜBLIN management board member Reinhard Kerschner said: "This acquisition is an important step in our growth strategy. By merging with BAUER Spezialtiefbau Austria, we can deepen our expertise in the field of pile construction and we are very pleased to welcome the new team to our ranks." This move is set to bolster ZÜBLIN's expertise in specialised deep foundation services, combining strengths in diaphragm walls, grouting, groundwater drainage, and piles. The integration with BAUER Spezialtiefbau's pile-focused expertise is expected to provide a more comprehensive range of services to meet diverse customer needs, from regional endeavours to large-scale construction sites. The full integration under is anticipated to be completed by 2026. This development follows a stable year for Ed. ZÜBLIN, which reported a construction output of approximately €4.6bn ($5.2bn) in 2024, a slight decrease from €4.7bn in the previous year. The company's output share in Germany increased from 84% to 86%, with an order backlog of €8.6bn as of 31 December. Despite a drop in order intake from around €6bn in 2023 to approximately €4.2bn, partly due to the acquisition of three major projects in 2023, ZÜBLIN maintains a positive outlook for this financial year. ZÜBLIN management board member Stephan von der Heyde said: "We expect stable business development in the current year. Our course for the future is set: planning and building in a resource-conserving and climate-neutral way - across all business areas. "Thanks to our wide range of services, we have a broad base and assume that orders in infrastructure and industrial construction will continue to cushion the current sometimes challenging building construction sector."
