Suits star reveals surprise lesson after filming BBC series about Lockerbie bombing

Glimpsing the real-life intricacies of the UK's deadliest terrorist attack was far more daunting than any fictional courtroom dramas. SUITS star Patrick J Adams admits he was humbled by the enormity of the Lockerbie bombing investigation. The Canadian actor, 43, made his name as college dropout turned genius lawyer Mike Ross in the popular drama series — alongside on-screen missus Rachel Zane, played by Meghan Markle. Patrick, who plays retired FBI Special Agent Dick Marquise in new BBC series The Bombing of Pan Am 103, said: 'What surprised me the most was how complicated the investigation was. 'Before knowing the details I'd have assumed the FBI would be welcomed into any investigation — maybe that's my North American bias. "Of course, that wasn't the case — this was an attack that happened on Scottish soil, belonged to the Scots, and they had to be up front.' He added: 'I'd never imagined how complicated an investigation like that would be. 'Even though everyone wants the same thing — to get to the answer of who did this, how did they do it and how we hold them account-able, you have different people with different agendas, different ways of going about that. "You have egos involved, we're human beings and it's an imperfect thing trying to solve an unimaginable crime. I've been amazed at all the details of these people who all want the same thing struggling to get on the same page, I'm sure that's something that still happens to this day.' The terror atrocity killed 259 passengers - plus 11 locals in the Dumfriesshire town of Lockerbie - when the London-New York flight exploded in mid-air on December 21, 1988. The late Libyan spy Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was the only person ever convicted over the attack and was jailed for life in 2001 on 270 counts of murder at a 72-day trial at a special Scots court convened in The Netherlands. Scottish ministers released him back to his homeland eight years later on compassionate grounds after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and he then survived for another three years. I found a girl's body in my hedge after bombed plane nearly took out my home in Lockerbie - months later her mum knocked on my door Alleged spy Abu Agila Masud is still to stand trial in Washington DC accused of assembling the Lockerbie bomb after the case was initially due to be heard this month. The BBC drama The Bombing of Pan Am 103 follows the untold story of the Scots-US investigation into the attack and the devastating effect it had on the small town and the families who lost loved ones. Patrick, married to Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario, added: 'I think I take for granted, as someone who doesn't know a tonne about law enforcement or didn't until doing this, that everybody would just roll up their sleeves and work together and it would be easy. 'I was also so surprised by the details of the investigation, the fact that this was an enormous 850 square mile crime scene and ultimately the evidence that led to al-Megrahi's conviction is this tiny piece of plastic from a motherboard that would fit on the end of your finger. 'Just the scale of that with this tiny thing that comes out of this enormous, unimaginable, horrible event stretched over hundreds of square miles. 'There is something profoundly amazing about that and the fact human beings have the capacity to find that piece of evidence that leads to the arrest and conviction.' Sex Education star Connor Swindells, 28, plays Glaswegian Detective Sergeant Ed McCusker in the new show, while Ozark actor Peter Mullan, 65, portrays Detective Chief Superintendent John Orr and Grey's Anatomy hunk Kevin McKidd, 51, is Detective Chief Inspector Harry Bell. Outlander's Lauren Lyle, 31 and Downton Abbey's Phyllis Logan, 69, and Ray Donovan's Eddie Marsan, 56, are also part of the ensemble cast. Lauren, who wasn't born when the bomb exploded, was touched by the horrific reality of the attack after speaking with the real DS McCusker - as she plays his wife June. The actress, from Glasgow, said: 'It's something people don't really talk about. Everyone sort of grimaces and Lockerbie is known really as that place that that happened. 'I had a couple of quite long phone calls with Ed McCusker. And I think it just put into perspective the emotional reality. I think the women of the story put into the emotional reality of what happened. 'And he told me that June, he was sort of doing it for her, because they had this amazing romantic story of their life and their love together. And about five years ago, she died of cancer. 'And the last thing that she said to him was, you have to tell your Lockerbie story. So it was sort of an honour to be a part of something that I've always known about and to do it for her as well, because she'll never see it come to fruition. 'I don't think I realised the depth of the horror of how gruesome and how many people were affected.' Eddie, who plays Tom Thurman, FBI bomb investigator, added: 'The overall story was what I thought was so beautiful about it. It was the story of a collective response to a trauma. 'The way the women of Lockerbie washed the clothes, the way the team solved it. It's not a story about one hero. It's about a community, a collective of people having a heroic response, which I loved.' One of the big talking points on set was the variety of Scots accents. Eddie said: 'I have worked in Scotland before. I did a film with Pavel Pavlovský called The Restraint of Beasts that never got finished, and I spent a month fence-building in Ayrshire. But that was about 20 years ago. 'I was a really good fence-builder. Me and Rhys Ifans. I remember doing a Scottish accent once for Peter Mullen and he said to me, 'why are you speaking to me in a Swedish accent?'.' And Connor Swindells had even more reason to get his Scots accent right - as his model wife Amber Anderson grew up in Forres. He added: 'It's been a dream, the people have been so brilliant and welcoming to me. 'I love Scotland and I spend a lot of time up here, my partner is from here. It's a place that's familiar to me and a place I feel at home.' The Bombing of Pan Am 103 is on BBC iPlayer and BBC One from 9pm on Sunday (May 18) and will be on Netflix globally at a later date. ends

‘Suits LA': David Costabile To Return As Daniel Hardman

SUITS — "He's Back" Episode 214 — Pictured: David Costabile as Daniel Hardman — (Photo by: Shane ... More Mahood/USA Network/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images) Another day, another actor from Suits to guest star on spinoff Suits LA. David Costabile, who had the recurring role of the former Pearson Hardman partner Daniel Hardman on the long-running Suits, will reprise his role in an upcoming episode of the recently launched spinoff Suits LA. Costabile is now the third actor from Suits to pop into the fictional Black Lane Law Firm following Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter and Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt. But will it help the struggling new legal-themed entry on NBC? Based on the Live+Same day ratings from Nielsen, the arrival of the first of three episodes with Gabriel Macht on Suits LA last Sunday had no impact. Suits LA on March 16 scored a paltry 1.59 million viewers in the Sunday 9 p.m. ET hour on NBC, which placed it a distant third in the time period behind competing Watson on CBS (5.15 million) and the second hour of American Idol on ABC (4.60 million). Particularly alarming for Suits LA was a loss of 57 percent in viewers from the lead-in, nature documentary series The Americas (3.65 million at 8 p.m. ET), and a drop in the 9:30 p.m. ET half-hour of 23 percent (1.79 to 1.38 million). Demographically, Suits LA scored a paper thin 0.2 rating in key adults 18-49, not to mention dismal results across the board. Note: These results do not include delayed viewing. Mirroring any spinoff television series, the stunt casting of former cast members can ignite initial interest. But the potential success of any show is dependent on standing on its own, which may require a great deal of patience from NBC. As it stands, the first bit of stunt casting for Suits LA did not work. Earlier this week, NBC announced it was moving newbie Grosse Pointe Garden Society, which airs following Suits LA in the Sunday 10 p.m. ET hour, to Friday at 8 p.m. ET starting on April 4. Veteran newsmagazine Dateline will move into the Suits LA lead-out spot.

MSU Texas team chosen to compete in NASA challenge

A team of students from Midwestern State University was one of 10 university groups chosen to compete in an elite competition hosted by NASA, according to an MSU Texas media release. The Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students — NASA SUITS — is a design challenge in which college students nationwide help design user interface solutions for future spaceflight needs. The MSU Texas team, Team Selene, submitted a project proposal to NASA to develop and test an interface for a space suit and an interface for the lunar rover. The announcement was made by NASA with a video. Students held a watch party and were excited to hear Team Selene announced along with teams from Columbia, Purdue, Indiana State, Brown and Rice universities, the University of Michigan, and the University of Texas at Austin. Team Selene members include Zachary Barrentine, Rykir Evans, Zachary Lewis, Kerry Manolagas, Ryan Mathews, Mierhamza Sly Rahimi, Adrian Robledo and Jack Tsui. Robledo is the team leader. Kyle Garcia, Jarett Green, Victoria Heredia, Carlos Polanco and Ethan Saenz are alternates. 'It's truly surreal and an incredible honor to have been selected among so many universities,' Robledo said in the media release. 'Knowing that we're going up against such big schools is both exciting and intimidating, but it also fuels our determination. I feel proud to represent our institution on this stage, and I can't wait to rise to the challenge.' The MSU Texas team is paired with Team Space from the University of California, Irvine. Faculty adviser Tina Johnson, professor of computer science, said that UC Irvine will work on the spacesuit display, and Team Selene will work on the rover interface. 'The students will work on the project throughout the spring semester and then travel to Johnson Space Center in Houston May 18-22 for testing," Johnson said in the media release. Testing for the lunar mission will be at night at the Johnson Space Center rock yard to simulate the low lighting levels at the lunar south pole. The team received an intramural grant through the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research at MSU Texas to fund equipment purchases and the travel to NASA in May. 'The Department of Computer Science is proud to be represented by Team Selene in the NASA SUITS challenge. Given the importance of the project, it should be something to celebrate as these types of accomplishments set MSU Texas apart from other small colleges," Johnson said. "This remarkable achievement highlights not only the talent and hard work of our students but also the strength of our university's STEM programs," she said. "Despite being a smaller institution, our team's success in this competitive challenge emphasizes that size does not define impact — passion and dedication do.' NASA's Artemis missions seek to land the first woman and first person of color on the moon and build a sustained human presence on the moon and ultimately, Mars. This is the eighth year of the SUITS program.
