HRL Laboratories Unveils SPARES: A Revolutionary Approach to Structural Reliability Assessment
MALIBU, Calif., June 10, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HRL Laboratories is introducing SPARES (Surrogate‐accelerated, Physics‐guided Assessment for the Reliability of Structures), a breakthrough project that leverages the layer-by-layer nature of additive manufacturing to deliver faster, smarter and more efficient structural reliability analysis for metal parts, providing fatigue performance data without destructive testing. About SPARES SPARES combines physics-based modeling with machine learning-driven surrogate models to dramatically reduce the time and computational effort required to evaluate structural integrity, without sacrificing accuracy. SPARES is a DARPA-funded effort under the SURGE (Structures Uniquely Resolved to Guarantee Endurance) program, recognizing HRL's leadership in advancing structural reliability assessment. SPARES is developed in collaboration with: Boeing, Purdue University and the University of Utah. SPARES leverages Fringe Inspection™, a real-time, layer-by-layer topology inspection product from Phase3D, that provides objective data of the additive manufacturing process. What you need to know Reliability assessments are critical for industries like aerospace, automotive and civil engineering, where materials and structures must withstand extreme conditions over time. Traditional methods rely on complex simulations or large-scale physical testing, both of which can be slow and expensive. SPARES tackles this challenge by: Collecting sensor data and in-situ monitoring during the additive manufacturing process. Using surrogate models, which are streamlined, AI-assisted versions of full-scale simulations, to rapidly predict how structures will perform under stress. These models are informed by real physics to ensure that results remain reliable even as computational effort is reduced. "SPARES is about efficiency without compromise," said Eric Clough, Principal Investigator at HRL Laboratories. "By embedding advanced physics principles into AI-driven models, we're able to speed up the reliability assessment process while maintaining the accuracy engineers need to make critical decisions." Dig deeper This hybrid approach makes it possible to assess failure risks, predict material performance and optimize designs in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods. Whether evaluating aircraft components, vehicle frames or infrastructure items, SPARES provides engineers with fast, physics and data-driven insights to enhance safety and durability. HRL Laboratories, alongside its esteemed partners, is committed to developing innovative solutions that address real-world engineering challenges. SPARES is a testament to that mission, pushing the boundaries of structural reliability research and paving the way for smarter, more resilient designs. HRL Laboratories, LLC, California ( pioneers the next frontiers of physical and information science. Delivering transformative technologies in automotive, aerospace and defense, HRL advances the critical missions of its customers. As a private company owned jointly by Boeing and GM, HRL is a source of innovations that advance the state of the art in profound and far-reaching ways. Ex-NFL star Donald Driver becomes chief motivation officer to help empower girls to stay in sports
Donald Driver was a four-time Pro Bowler with the Green Bay Packers during his 14-year career. He built a lasting legacy on the field, and he is looking to grow it off the field as the first chief motivation officer for SURGE by BSN Sports. He will help lead a program dedicated to empowering girls to stay in sports as the company provides tools for coaches to help female athletes. "We really want to bring awareness and strength to women in sports because, right now, we all know that 72% of coaches in youth sports are males. There's not a lot of females that do this," Driver said in an interview with Fox News Digital. "What we want to do is say, how do we bring awareness but then also give coaches the tools that they need to be successful in coaching young women in sports." Driver explained that his children are different in the way they need to be coached and properly motivated. He said he can yell at his son about the things he does, who can move on from it, but his daughter is different. "I have to go into more of that heart-to-heart conversation with them, like, 'Hey, let's work together to address the issue. I understand this must be a frustrating situation.' I really have to talk to them different ... than I talk to my son. "With this program, we really want to just continue to aim to empower women to play sports and never stop." Driver was named the chief motivation officer last week. He helped the Packers to a Super Bowl title in 2010. He had 743 catches for 10,137 yards and 61 touchdowns during his career. Adams Center woman among people convicted for role in drug trafficking ring
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WWTI) – An Adams Center woman is among a group of 30 people that were convicted for their parts in two major drug trafficking networks that were operating in Central and Northern New York. The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James made the announcement on Thursday of the convictions. The drug rings operated in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. Two CNY drug trafficking rings indicted by New York Attorney General The Attorney General's Office said that Terrah Frederick pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The sentence will be four years in prison plus two years of post-release supervision. Frederick was part of a group of 31 people charged with 192 crimes and were originally indicted in November 2023. Devine Mobley, who was arrested in 2023 after a traffic stop at a Watertown hotel, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years plus two years post-release supervision. According to the AG's office, the year-long investigation into the two drug trafficking rings led to the seizure of more than 150,000 envelopes of fentanyl or fentanyl mixed with heroin. Roughly one pound of methamphetamine was recovered, along with one-quarter kilogram of cocaine, three illegal firearms, two vehicles used to transport and sell drugs, and $16,500 connected to drug activity. The takedown marked another major drug bust in the Attorney General's Suburban and Upstate Response to the Growing Epidemic (S.U.R.G.E.) Initiative, a law enforcement effort that brings together state and local law enforcement to target New York's growing – and often violent – heroin, fentanyl, opioid, and narcotics trafficking networks. Since launching in 2017, SURGE has taken 991 alleged traffickers off the streets. The investigation brought together the resources of more than a dozen state, local, and federal enforcement agencies, including the SPD, Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, Oswego County Sheriff's Office, City of Oswego Police Department, City of Fulton Police Department, New York State Police, New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Cortland County Sheriff's Office, the Metro-Jefferson Drug Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Border Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Onondaga County Probation Department.
