Indonesia: Classical Indian dance drama 'Shiva Tandava' steals the show at Bali Festival

Jakarta: Over 400 people attended the screening of powerful Indian classical dance drama 'Shiva Tandava' at the 47th Bali Art Festival in Indonesia, on Friday. Organised by the Consulate General of India (CGI) and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) in Bali in collaboration with Sangamam Global Academy, the event also saw attendance of several Indonesians, including top ministers. Addressing the audience, Indian Consul General in Bali Shashank Vikram spoke about the significance of cultural exchanges and the legacy of traditional arts. "With enthusiastic attendance of over 400 audience including government officials, academicians, members of Indian diaspora, artists, students, and business personalities, the programme concluded with the distribution of certificates of appreciation to all talented Indian troupes and Balinese artists performed that evening," the Consulate General of India in Bali posted on X. The programme on Friday was inaugurated by the SVCC Director of SVCC, Naveen Meghwal, and graced by the presence of Padma Shri recipient I Wayan Dibia, representing the Bali Provincial Department of Culture. The event was followed by the first performance, the energised and vibrant fusion of Kathak and Balinese dance 'Gaaye Jaa'. Following this, the most awaited collaboration of Bharatnatyam and Kathak dance was magnificently performed, leaving the audience deeply moved. The 47th Bali Arts Festival at Taman Werdhi Budaya Art Centre in Denpasar was officially opened on June 21 by Indonesia's Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, representing Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The festival is scheduled to run until July 19. "This is not only an annual agenda, but an important milestone in the journey of advancing culture in the country. Since it was first held in 1979, the Bali Arts Festival has become proof of Bali's consistency in maintaining its cultural ties," said Fadli. India and Indonesia share millennia-old close cultural and commercial contacts. The Hindu, Buddhist, and later Muslim faiths travelled to Indonesia from the shores of India. The stories from the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata form a source of Indonesian folk art and drama. The shared culture, colonial history, and post-independence goals of political sovereignty, economic self-sufficiency, and independent foreign policy are unifying factors in the bilateral relationship.

Sri Lankan ministers, cricketers join yoga enthusiasts for IDY celebrations

Colombo: On the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), various Sri Lankan Ministers, Parliamentarians, cricket legends, cultural icons, and several locals gathered at the iconic Independence Square in Colombo to practice yoga, highlighting its significance in promoting a healthy lifestyle. The event was organised by the Indian High Commission in Colombo, in collaboration with Sri Lanka's Health Ministry, and witnessed more than 100 yoga instructors from across the island nation, demonstrating yoga to participants, including the country's tri forces, police, students, and yoga enthusiasts. Several senior ministers of the Lankan government, including Anil Jayantha and Chrishantha Abeysena, Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih and several industry members, joined the event. Meanwhile, several events were also held at Galle, Kandy and Jaffna, organised by the diplomatic offices in Sri Lanka. The 2025 theme, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health,' has emphasised the connection between personal well-being and planetary health, aligning with India's broader vision of global harmony through traditional wisdom. Earlier on Thursday, the Department of Ayurveda, under the Ministry of Health of the Government of Sri Lanka and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), the cultural arm of the High Commission of India in Colombo, jointly organised IDY celebrations across the island. In a historic first, this IDY event was simultaneously held in 113 Ayurveda hospitals, including teaching and research institutions across all nine provinces of the South Asian nation, along with four universities. This collaborative celebration with SVCC marks the first time that the entire network of Ayurveda institutions in Sri Lanka participated in the IDY in a unified manner. The SVCC extended support by providing yoga mats, instructional books, and curated video content to all participating centres to facilitate the event. This island-wide event underscored the growing global recognition of yoga as a powerful tool for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, while also strengthening the traditional healthcare ties between Sri Lanka and India.

Meenaakshi Chaudhary becomes south cinema's rising star, bags major projects back-to-back

Actress Meenaakshi Chaudhary is fast becoming one of the most sought-after names in South Indian cinema, with her recent casting in two high-profile films creating waves in the industry. After receiving acclaim for her performances in Lucky Bhaskar opposite Dulquer Salmaan and The GOAT alongside Thalapathy Vijay, Meenaakshi has clearly positioned herself as a director's favourite in the South. Her impressive rise has been marked by her entry into two much-talked-about films. First, she was brought on board to play the lead opposite Naga Chaitanya in an upcoming untitled project directed by Karthik Dandu under the SVCC banner. Industry sources reveal that Meenaakshi was always the top contender for the role, and the decision to cast her reflects the makers' confidence in her aligning perfectly with the film's vision. Soon after, Meenaakshi was also confirmed as the new lead in Anaganaga Oka Raju, a romantic comedy starring Naveen Polishetty. Initially, the film featured a different lead, but changes due to scheduling conflicts paved the way for Meenaakshi to take the spotlight. The film's second teaser, released in December 2024, showcased her sparkling chemistry with Naveen and generated a positive response from audiences. What sets Meenaakshi apart is not just her screen presence but her strategic approach to role selection. She is reportedly reviewing both Telugu and Tamil scripts with pan-India potential, showing a keen interest in building a wider cinematic footprint. With two big films already in her kitty and more speculated on the horizon, Meenaakshi Chaudhary is not just replacing anyone—she's carving a space for herself as one of the brightest rising stars in Indian cinema. Directors and trade analysts alike are closely watching her journey, anticipating a big 2026 ahead.

Future uncertain for Sauk Valley Community College's TRIO program

May 15—DIXON — A program supporting some of the Sauk Valley's most vulnerable college students for more than 25 years is facing uncertainty amid looming federal funding cuts. Sauk Valley Community College's (SVCC) TRIO Student Support Services is a nationwide federally funded initiative serving first-generation college students, individuals from low-income backgrounds and students with documented disabilities. TRIO provides more than 200 SVCC students with individual academic advising, tutoring, textbook and technology lending, financial literacy and skills workshops, assistance with transferring to four-year universities and more. SVCC's TRIO Project Director Stephanie Jacobs said the program is funded through competitive grants from the United States Department of Education, which schools must reapply for every five years. In its Fiscal Year 2026 budget, the Trump administration is proposing eliminating funding for all TRIO programs, calling them "a relic of the past." The President's budget proposal outlines recommended spending and priorities for the next fiscal year, but Congress controls the actual process. Lawmakers use the proposal as a guide to create their own budget and pass 12 appropriations bills, which must be approved by both chambers and signed by the President to fund the government. If the proposed TRIO cuts are part of the final bill, SVCC stands to lose $1.5 million over the next five years to support those students. SVCC's Vice President of Academics and Student Services Jon Madrell said that loss would be devastating. "You'd have to re-strategize everything on your own dollars, and that's tough to come by right now," Mandrell said. "To absorb those resources would be daunting. I don't know that we would be able to put as much on the table as we do now." To be eligible for the program, students must meet one of three criteria: * Be a first-generation college student, meaning neither of their parents has a Bachelor's degree. * Meet income guidelines based on federal standards, determined by FAFSA eligibility * Have a documented disability According to SVCC's Vice President of Advancement Lori Cortez, 84% of SVCC students qualify as low-income and 90% are first-generation college students. Without TRIO's support, she said qualifying students statistically do not make it past their first semester of college. "Our TRIO program has retention and graduation rates at triple the national community college norm for those students," Cortez said. "So, when you take a look at our trio program and how effective it is compared to students at any other college or university, you'll see that what we're doing here, it actually works, and not just here at Sauk, but TRIO programs nationally." The SVCC administration has been reaching out to state politicians to fight for the program. Congressman Eric Sorensen provided Shaw Local with the following comments regarding the TRIO program. "TRIO programs open the doors of opportunity for students who might not otherwise see college as an option—especially in rural communities like Dixon. As a member of the TRIO Caucus, I am focused on improving higher education access for low-income, first-generation, and disabled students," Sorensen said. "Our district has one of the highest TRIO participation rates in the country and cutting that program would mean eliminating critical support systems that help students stay on track, graduate, and reach their full potential. I strongly oppose any attempt to pull the rug out from under these students. We should be investing in their futures not turning our backs on them." For more information on the TRIO program or to apply, students can visit the TRIO office on campus or visit
