It's just like home

No time to waste: Fergus Tierney training with his new club Sabah. — Sabah FC PETALING JAYA: Football striker Fergus Tierney may be in a new city, but he feels right at home. The 22-year-old Tierney, who recently joined Sabah from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), says life in Kota Kinabalu reminded him a lot of Penang. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but was raised since young at the Pearl of the Orient. 'Kota Kinabalu is great so far, kind of reminds me of home in Penang,' said Fergus, whose father Martin Tierney was a former professional footballer with Penang and Police in the past. 'The people are friendly, the food's familiar, and there's this laid-back coastal vibe that makes it easy to settle in.' Standing at 1.86m, Fergus brings a versatile attacking profile to Martin Stano's side. Primarily a striker or second striker, he is also capable of operating from the flanks, a flexibility Sabah will surely welcome as they seek to build on a promising squad for the coming Super League season. Fergus had been part of the JDT set-up since 2022 but was sent out for valuable first-team experience in Thailand, featuring for Chonburi last year before a short stint at Nakhon Pathom United earlier this season. 'I had a great experience in Thailand playing good football in a good league, but now I'm excited for the project at Sabah and looking forward to the upcoming season,' he said. 'Sabah are building a promising team this year, and I feel like I can contribute positively on the pitch and hopefully have a great season.' Having earned six caps and scored a goal for Malaysia, the young forward is still hungry to improve. And in Sabah, competition upfront would be feisty as they have hired some top-quality attackers such as Darren Lok, Azhad Harraz Arman and Bosnian Ajden Mujagic. 'Competition here is healthy, and I want to learn from the more senior players and coaches to become a better player,' he added. As Sabah aim to climb the table with renewed attacking firepower, Tierney's energy and enthusiasm, both on and off the pitch, could be the spark they need.

Tierney, who has earned six caps and scored one goal for Malaysia's national team Harimau Malaya, previously played for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). He is expected to strengthen Sabah FC's attacking options for the 2025/2026 Malaysia League season. 'We're delighted to welcome Fergus to our family. His experience in Thai football and with JDT, combined with his national team exposure, makes him a valuable addition to our squad,' the club said on their official Facebook page today. Tierney was born in Glasgow, Scotland but holds a Malaysian passport because he was raised in Malaysia, and also played 12 times with Malaysia's Under-23 squad, bagging three goals. Meanwhile, Sabah FC also shared their current 2025/2026 season squad list. Several Harimau Malaya squad members have been retained, including striker Darren Lok, midfielder Stuart Wilkin, defenders Dominic Tan and Daniel Ting, and veteran goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat. The squad's new foreign signings include New Zealand national team defender Dane Ingham, Australian midfielder Dean Pelekanos, and Bosnian forward Ajdin Mujagic, while Spanish midfielder Miguel Cifuentes remains with the club. However, last season's team captain Park Tae-soo, a South Korean defender known affectionately as 'Karim' by the fans, has been released by the Rhinos.

'Even though it was bitter, I swallowed it'

KUALA LUMPUR: The farewell message from Sabah's South Korean footballer, Park Tae Su, was trenchant and poignant. "Thank you, Sabah. Even though it was bitter, I swallowed it because this is the reality of football," he wrote on Instagram yesterday. "I just hope that in the future, clubs can be more professional in treating us as players. We are human too. I joined Sabah in a respectful way in 2019. My hope was to leave in the same way. "Since January, there were promises to sit down with me and talk (about salaries owing to Tae Su by Sabah). Time and again I waited, because I was loyal and loved this team, I didn't look for other clubs or opportunities. But there was no answer, only, 'we'll talk later'. "When the season ended, I asked again. Still silence. As the English saying goes, 'no answer is an answer'." Tae Su's message ended with well wishes for his former teammates. "It's okay. All the best to my beloved team, I'll always be your No. 1 supporter. "I hope that in the future, we all learn that honesty, transparency and respect are not just decorative words in meetings, but essential foundations in building a strong team. Or at the very least, a team that appear to know what they are doing. "Keep going. But maybe this time, with a bit more responsibility and common sense." Tae Su, who arrived in Kota Kinabalu in 2019, quickly became a fan favourite. He made over 100 appearances for Sabah across all competitions, contributing 16 goals (as a defender) and helping Sabah qualify for the AFC Cup for the first time. Sabah FC yesterday confirmed the release of 13 players from their squad, including Tae Su and Indonesia winger Saddil Ramdani. "Some have been with us for years, some for seasons. Regardless, your contributions meant everything to this club. You'll always be part of the Sabah FC family. Selamat maju jaya! Once a Rhino, always a Rhino," wrote the club in a farewell message.

Safawi ready to roar in new position as Harimau Malaya striker

WINGER Muhammad Safawi Rasid is ready to embrace the challenge of playing in a new position as a striker in international matches for Harimau Malaya. Muhammad Safawi stated that the Tier 1 international match against Cape Verde last week was his first experience playing in the striker's position in a national team fixture. However, Muhammad Safawi who has more frequently been deployed on the wing and in central midfield positions previously, had no difficulty adapting to the new role. 'For me, there's no problem with an attacking position because perhaps the coach knows better what I do in training. So I took the responsibility that night to prove something. Alhamdulillah, we got a good result,' he said when met at the national team's training session here today. The 28-year-old player was fielded in the starting eleven, partnering with Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim and Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi in attack when Malaysia drew 1-1 with Cape Verde at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, last Thursday. Meanwhile, Muhammad Safawi considers the presence of heritage players in the national team as beneficial for creating a healthy competitive environment among players. 'I have no problem. Regardless of whether they are local players, naturalized players, or anyone, for me, in training, you have to give 100 percent, no excuses. I have no problem competing in training,' he said. Local media today reported that three new heritage players will arrive in Malaysia ahead of tomorrow night's match against Cape Verde. The three players mentioned are striker Rodrigo Holgado from the United States, Azerbaijan club Sabah FC defender Jon Irazabal, and Olympiacos striker Jefte Betancor, who is currently on loan at Panserraikos. Malaysia will face Cape Verde in a closed door friendly match at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil here, tomorrow before their showdown against Vietnam in a Group F match of the 2027 Asia Cup qualifiers at the National Stadium, next Tuesday. Vietnam and Malaysia share the top spot in the group with three points each after winning their respective opening matches.
