Sabah Karate Association returns with five gold medals

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) finished sixth overall in the 4th Shureido International Karate Cup championship concluded at Gelanggang Olahraga Ciracas in West Jakarta, Indonesia on Sunday. They took home five golds, two silvers and 14 bronzes in the three-day competition which attracted more than 2,000 participants. The gold medal winners were Lennon Klopp Whoyleon (U10 kumite male -30kg), Christopher Chrisvly Shalven (kumite male -40kg), Iona Siew Lin Maria Fernandez King (U14 kumite female +52kg), Nur Rasyiqah Fariah Razmi (cadet kumite female -54kg) and Nur Farhabatrisya Ershan Jr (U12 kumite female +30kg). The silver medals came from Marinus Zanna Mae (U12 kumite female -30kg) and Dafne Henry Saimpon (U10 kumite +25kg), while the bronze medals were contributed by Cresentia Collin Gahis Calsey (U8 kata female, kumite -20kg), Qaish Basyeer Alrajhi Tsabbit Aqdamana (U8 kumite male +25kg), Dafne Henry Saimpon (U10 individual kata female), Whoyleon Lennon Klopp (U10 kata male), Amber Alley Walter Glen (U10 kumite female +25kg), Under-12 team kata male, U14 team kata female, Putra Ray Nazwa Heryzuan (kumite male -45kg), Qaish Mokhtar Albukhary Tsabbit Aqdamana (cadet kumite male -70kg), Ivan Nicholas Chai (cadet kumite male +70kg), Shawanda Dania Sharul (cadet kumite female -47kg), junior team kata male and Muhammad Irfan Shah Mohd Fadli Shah (junior kumite male -76kg). The contingent represented by 83 athletes accompanied by nine coaches was making a return to the competition after one-year lapse. They last participated in Pasay City, Philippines two years ago and managed to win 12 golds, 14 silvers and 16 bronzes. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) is making a return to the 4th Shureido International Karate Cup championship to be held at Gelanggang Olahraga Ciracas in West Jakarta, Indonesia starting on July 4. SKA secretary general Julian Chin said on Tuesday that they will be represented by 83 athletes accompanied by nine coaches. 'The organisers are expecting more than 2,000 participants in the three-day competition. This will be a good opportunity for our athletes to gain experience against strong foreign opponents and hopefully they can give their best,' he said. SKA did not take part in the meet last year. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) returned with two golds and one bronze at the Thailand Karate Open Championship which concluded at the CU Sports Complex in Bangkok on Sunday. Muhd Rayyan Razdsha Razali captured the first gold on the opening day in the U14 male kata followed by the bronze from Muhd Farish Danish Mohd Saidin in the male kumite junior -61kg on the second day before the final gold delivered by Anna Qaisara Mohd Nazri in the cadet female kumite -61kg on Sunday. The contingent aged 12-16 led by coach Mahfudz Azeem Ag Hashim consisted of five athletes. The other two members are Ag Muhd Arif Iman Ahzim and Rombituon Mary-Ann Anthony Abah Rodriguez. SKA secretary Julian Chin congratulated the athletes and praised them for giving their best. 'It was a very good outing and I congratulate the athletes and coach for the outstanding result as there was no target and the trip was meant for exposure and to gain experience. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) finished seventh at the 24th Milo Open Karate Championship 2025 which concluded in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Despite being represented by only 10 athletes, they managed to win five gold and four bronze medals in the competition. The gold medals were captured by Nur Radhiah Fathiah Razimi (female junior kumite 16-17, -48kg), Danish Rayyan Rajis (cadet male kata and male individual cadet kumite 14-15, -57kg), Ivy Catrinaz Zurizal (individual female kumite 12-13) and Al Zovainz Zurizal (male individual cadet 14-15, -63kg). The bronzes were delivered by Putri Izz Dini Imtiaz Ali (girls kumite 8-9, +25kg G1), Abra Eiiyah Isabelle Mohd Asmawi (girls kumite 8-9, +25kg G2), Nur Shaheen Izazi Imtiaz Ali (female individual kata junior 16-17 G1) and Harris Qusyairi Helmy (individual male kata 12-13). SKA dominated the event last year by taking home the overall title with 17 golds, nine silvers and 27 bronzes as well as topping the non-sanction medal tally with 16 golds, 12 silvers and 12 bronzes. Secretary general Julian Chin congratulated the team led by coach Frederick Farlin with Abd Rahim Mohd Asmawi as team official. Cyril Oh, who was promoted to judge A, received his full licence. Meanwhile, Anney Henry gained promotion to kumite referee B status, Christy Gaibin to kumite judge A, Rayner Subinon to kumite judge B and kata judge B, while Choo Vui Leong retained his kata judge B and kumite referee A status. Sabah Karate Association secretary general Julian Chin congratulated all five for their achievement.
