THOOTHUKUDI: A two-day joint coastal security exercise, Sagar Kavach, commenced in Thoothukudi on Wednesday exercise aimed at enhancing the preparedness of the security agencies to counter potential maritime threats. The exercise is scheduled to conclude at 4 pm on Thursday. Personnel from the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Security Group, CISF, state police, and the Gulf of Mannar Forest Department took part in the exercise. As part of the drill, participants were divided into two groups- the Blue Force, comprising actual security personnel, and the Red Force, representing mock intruders. The objective was for the Blue Force to detect, intercept, and neutralise threats posed by the Red Force. During the exercise, residents along the coastal stretch were alerted and encouraged to report any suspicious movement or presence of outsiders. According to officials, the mock operation led to the successful 'capture' of 12 Red Force operatives who attempted to infiltrate vital locations. 'A team of six intruders was apprehended at the Thoothukudi fishing harbour, while four more were intercepted onboard a country boat about one nautical mile from Trespuram fishing jetty,' said a police officer. 'Two others were detained at old harbour bus stop.'

Trichy: Coastal Security Group, armed forces, and law enforcement agencies participated in the two-day 'Sagar Kavach' drill organised by the Indian Coast Guard along the delta coastline to test their preparedness against potential infiltration. Around 12 'intruders' were detained near Nagapattinam during the drill on Wednesday. Personnel from Tamil Nadu Commandos, Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy, and Central Industrial Security Force acted as 'red force' infiltrators while personnel from Tamil Nadu Police and Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group engaged them as the 'blue force' responders. The blue force responders patrolled in their fast interceptor boats and looked out for suspicious movements along the coastline of Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts. The red force targeted landings at places such as CPCL oil jetty (Nagore), Nagapattinam bus stand, Velankanni church, Arukatuthurai fishing harbour, and Kodiyakarai lighthouse in Nagapattinam district. In Mayiladuthurai, they targeted PPN power plant (Pillaiperumalnallur), Danish fort (Tharangambadi), Poompuhar lighthouse, Poompuhar harbour, Pazhaiyar harbour, and Thirumullaivasal fish landing centre. In Karaikal, they targeted the Adani port. On the first day, the blue force responders apprehended six red force members around four nautical miles east of Velankanni and six members at the CPCL oil jetty. The responders also seized the dummy explosives from the infiltrators.

A two-day coastal security exercise — 'Sagar Kavach' — began in the coastal areas of Cuddalore district on Wednesday to assess alertness and preparedness of stakeholders involved in coastal security and in thwarting possible terrorist intrusion through sea. Police sources said the Coastal Security Group (CSG) and the district police took part in the exercise. Checks were intensified in the coastal villages where surveillance was also stepped up to trace movement of any suspicious persons. The CSG personnel also carried out boat patrolling in the sea waters. The exercise was carried out to assess the swiftness on the part of the stakeholders in dealing with emergency situations.

A two-day coastal security exercise, 'Sagar Kavach', commenced in the coastal districts of central region in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday to assess the level of preparedness and alertness of stakeholders involved in coastal security. The exercise, which concludes on Thursday, is being carried out in Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts. Surveillance was stepped up along the coastal areas as part of the exercise. The Coast Guard, Indian Navy, district police, Coastal Security Group of the Tamil Nadu Police and other stakeholders are involved in the joint exercise that started in the early hours. One of the objectives of the drill is to review the preparedness of the stakeholders to thwart intrusion of terrorists through the sea route. Police personnel deployed at check posts in the coastal areas in the five districts carried out intensive vehicle checks. The Coastal Security Group personnel carried out patrolling in the sea using their patrol boats checking the boats of fishermen in the sea and those anchored at the fishing harbours. The coastal villages were brought under the scope of heightened surveillance with CSG personnel looking out for any suspicious movements and sensitising the fishermen. Vigil was also mounted at high value targets situated in the coastal areas. Police sources said the exercise was mainly aimed at assessing the level of preparedness and alertness of the stakeholders involved in coastal security while dealing with maritime threats. As part of the exercise, a couple of Red Force teams comprising security personnel were sent as dummies in Nagapattinam district to act as aggressor force. The Red Force teams were 'secured' by the CSG personnel at Velankanni and Nagore.
