Silchar: Sribhumi police seized 870g of suspected heroin valued around Rs 6 crore and arrested three persons in this connection from the Nilambazar area on Tuesday.
The seized vehicle was allegedly operated by a private telecom company.
One of the accused, Iftiar Ahmed Laskar (20), works as an engineer for the company. The other arrested persons have been identified as Sahel Alom Laskar (19) of Joshnapar, Hailakandi and Sabbir Ahmed (24) of Defolala, Sribhumi.
Iftiar hails from Hati Sijubari in Hatigaon.
The seizure was made during a special operation led by Sribhumi SP Partha Pratim Das.
Acting on intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle and discovered the contraband packed in 76 soap boxes concealed within a specially designed chamber of the car.
The vehicle was reportedly en route from Mizoram's Champhai district, known to be a hotspot in the drug trafficking corridor.
SP Das said legal procedures are underway to identify others linked to the narcotics network. "Efforts are on to dismantle the entire supply chain," he added.
Reacting to the development, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the police team in a post on X, calling it another "significant step" in Assam Police's relentless war against drug trafficking.
