She said, 'When I came to Mumbai from Chennai as a newcomer, I was sixteen years old, Guru Dutt ji called me to sign a contract. My mother also came with me. My mother and father gave me this name – who are you to tell me it's not good?' Waheeda concluded while saying, 'I refused to change it. Waheeda Rehman can appear on screen, and you can call me Waheeda while working. It does not matter whether it is long or not.' She further mentioned that Guru Dutt tried hard to convince her to change her name, but she did not do so. She said, 'He gave examples of Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Meena Kumari and many others.
