Why a Hong Kong district councillor can't have it all as beauty queen hopeful
Taking part in beauty competitions while serving as a public representative is politically and practically infeasible, a commentator and former contestants have said after the city's youngest district councillor dropped out of this year's Miss Hong Kong Pageant. Advertisement Veteran political commentator Sonny Lo Shiu-hing said that he believed Sai Kung district councillor Angel Chong Nga-ting, 24, had faced pressure from her party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, to withdraw from the contest. Lo said the party was likely to be preparing to mobilise its members for the Legislative Council election in December. 'Having a district council member suddenly run for the Miss Hong Kong Pageant does not look good for the party's image and its preparation for the election,' he said. 'From the perspective of the largest political party [in Hong Kong], it expects party members to stick to party discipline. Advertisement 'By party discipline, it means that once they become a district councillor, it's a full-time job and they should be devoted to dealing with constituency services and residents' concerns.'

District councillor Angel Chong ends Miss HK bid Sai Kung district councillor Angel Chong speaks as a panelist at a key national security forum. File photo: RTHK Hong Kong's youngest district councillor has decided to pull out of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, saying her entry has impacted on perceptions of the local councils. Angel Chong, who represents Sai Kung, also said on Wednesday that her entry was initially aimed at raising public awareness of district council work. The announcement of her withdrawal, made on social media, came just a day after she was spotted among pageant entrants going through the first round of interviews in Tseung Kwan O. "I had hoped to make use of this opportunity to raise public awareness of the work [of district councillors], create a better social media communication platform and attract more people to participate in community building," Chong wrote. But she found, after looking through media reports and comments, that participating in the pageant was an approach that "might not be accepted by everyone". "This incident has had a certain impact on perceptions of district councils, which is something we don't wish to see," she said. "In the end, we think there's a need to protect the image of district councils based on public knowledge, stay true to our aspirations, and follow our heart. "I have decided not to continue in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant." Chong was appointed as a district councillor by the government after the 2023 election, becoming the youngest member in the current term.

Angel Chong may have to end controversial bid to join Miss Hong Kong Pageant
The youngest district councillor in Hong Kong may pull out of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant after her attempt to enter the competition drew criticism for compromising her duty to residents, with the leader of her political party telling the Post she would be reaching a 'thorough decision' soon. Gary Chan Hak-kan, chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), said on Wednesday that the party had called on Sai Kung district councillor Angel Chong Nga-ting, 24, to fulfil her duties. 'DAB has requested Chong to fulfil her duties and not let down the expectations of the residents, the Hong Kong government and everyone. I believe she will make a very carefully considered decision and announce it to everyone soon,' he told the Post. His comments came a day after Chong was spotted at Tseung Kwan O TVB City for the first round of interviews for the beauty contest. Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen said on Tuesday that every district councillor, regardless of their profession, background or sector, must meet the requirements of the performance monitoring system. Asked if Chong could retain her post if she won the pageant, Mak stressed that district councillors must perform their duties conscientiously regardless of the activities or work they want to participate in.
