Safety, education and empowerment of women need support from all, says Women Commission chief

Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja on Wednesday (July 23) highlighted that the safety of women, along with their education and empowerment, must be a collective responsibility of families and society. Addressing the media here, Ms. Sailaja said the Commission was on a brisk tour of the districts with a mission to spread awareness on the issues faced by women. 'The government has launched a number of welfare, empowerment and safety initiatives, but the real change should come from women themselves as they should remain eternally vigilant and utilise all the technology and support systems at their disposal to ensure their safety and progress,' she said. Expressing serious concern at the incidence of online frauds, the panel chief cautioned women against falling victim to stalkers and strangers online. Ms. Sailaja further warned against the negative impact of certain films on students and youth, calling for early intervention and guidance from parents. She reiterated that the problem of child marriages would be sternly dealt with and that the enforcement agencies have been directed to launch awareness drives across vulnerable areas. Ms. Sailaja urged young women and girl students to channel their energy towards education and empowerment. Ms. Sailaja called on the managements of educational institutions and workplaces to constitute internal complaint committees to prevent incidents of sexual harassment and regularly organise orientation for girl students and women. She also unveiled the publicity posters on 'Prevention of Domestic Violence', appealing to the target groups to download and install the Shakti App on their mobile phones.

Women must know their rights: Sailaja

Asserting that the State government had brought several laws for the safety of women, Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission chairperson Dr Rayapati Sailaja said that women should be aware of the laws formulated for them. The Commission is working actively towards creating awareness among women about the legal safeguards provided to them, she said. Ms. Sailaja toured Nandyal and Kurnool districts on Tuesday, where she held awareness sessions on laws and safeguards for women and also interacted with students and visited a one stop centre. Speaking at an awareness session on women empowerment, safety, and laws in Nandyal, Ms Sailaja said that the Commission has taken up several programmes in Rayalaseema to educate women and students about their safety and laws. She added that the Commission received complaints regarding harassment of college students and minors and is conducting campaigns to educate them. She felt that the speedy punishment under POCSO Act will act as a deterrent against crimes involving minors. She added that the increase in crime rate can be attributed to the exposure to social media and addiction to bad habits and that the State government is taking steps to control them. Ms Sailaja said that 156 Shakti Teams are working in the State and they have identified hotspots where there is a possibility of crime against women. At such places precautionary steps are being put in place. In Kurnool, the Chairperson conducted a similar awareness session and also visited the Sakhi One Stop Centre at the Governmetn General Hospital. She also interacted with students of the Ashoka Women's Engineering College at Dupadu during her visit.

Three Krishnagiri school students mop classroom; probe on

KRISHNAGIRI: Three school students of a panchayat union primary school (PUPS) near Shoolagiri were allegedly made to clean a classroom using a mop on Monday. In the video, three school students of the PUPS at U Sinigiripalli were cleaning the classroom using a mop. Following this, parents asked the school education department to take action against the school headmistress, Sailaja, on Wednesday. When TNIE spoke to Shoolagiri Block Education Officer, George, he said, 'The school has 39 students with two school management committee appointed teachers and a headmistress. Last Friday, a BaLA (Building as Learning Aid) painting was done in the school, and the paint was spilled on the floor. On Monday, while the HM and an SMC teacher were cleaning the spillage using a mop, three students allegedly used the mop playfully when the staff were away, and this was recorded by a parent on his phone.' 'We are enquiring. We will take necessary action,' he added. Krishnagiri Chief Education Officer (in-charge) A Muniraj echoed the same sentiment.

Farmers encouraged to opt for oil palm cultivation

Kakinada: The Horticulture Department in the Kakinada district is actively promoting oil palm cultivation this year by offering attractive subsidies and awareness programmes aimed at significantly expanding the crop's cultivation area. Officials are encouraging farmers, especially those relying on borewells for cultivating paddy and certain horticultural crops in upland regions, to switch to oil palm as a sustainable and profitable alternative. Currently, crops such as paddy, vegetables, mulberry, and cotton dominate the district's agricultural landscape. However, from this year, the department has set ambitious targets to expand oil palm cultivation: 3,050 hectares in Pithapuram, 2,193.50 hectares in Peddapuram, 2,222.40 hectares in Tuni, 1,825 hectares in Sankhavaram, 2,347 hectares in Jaggampeta, and 2,128 hectares in Prathipadu. Officials have begun educating farmers about the long-term benefits of oil palm, especially in the backdrop of India's continued reliance on imported palm oil. Expanding domestic cultivation could significantly benefit local farmers. The government is offering robust incentives to promote the crop. Farmers will receive free planting material worth RS 20,000 per hectare (approximately 57 plants per hectare). In addition, they will get RS 5,200 per year for four years to cover fertilizer and maintenance costs. An additional RS 5,200 per year is available if intercropping is undertaken. Subsidy amounts will be directly credited to farmers' accounts under the MGNREGS. Pithapuram Horticulture Officer Sailaja said awareness programmes on oil palm cultivation and government subsidies have generated considerable interest among farmers. She added that many currently growing paddy face recurring losses due to floods and pests. In this context, the department is encouraging farmers to adopt oil palm as a viable, long-term alternative.

Spl action plan to educate rural women on laws: Women's panel chief

Vijayawada: The Women's Commission is working effectively with the goal of increasing respect for women. Due to the previous government's inaction, the Women's Commission became inactive in addressing attacks, harassment and injustices against women, leading to a loss of public trust in the commission, said Rayapati Sailaja, chairperson of State Women's Commission. She said in a statement here on Monday that since assuming charge as the chairperson of the Women's Commission, she had prepared plans to raise awareness and prevent atrocities against women and girls. When heinous acts occurred, the commission immediately spoke with the victims and stood by them, ensuring that perpetrators are punished. The commission is also reviewing with officials to prevent rapes and atrocities against women in the State. The Commission is working to instill confidence in women, assuring them that the Women's Commission will not stand by if even one woman faces injustice. The Women's Commission plays a crucial role in confronting injustices against women in society. Unlike in the past, this time the Women's Commission is free from political pressure, maintaining political neutrality and operating with a focus on justice. 'Our aim is to provide immediate assistance to victimised women, regardless of their affiliation with ruling or opposition parties,' she said. The Women's Commission will always be at the forefront of implementing women's legal rights and protections. From receiving complaints from victims to ensuring investigative authorities take action, the commission operates with unwavering oversight. The commission will raise awareness about legal protections under IPC sections, POCSO, domestic violence and POSH Acts among young women and working women in rural areas. 'Additionally, we are planning to conduct awareness sessions on laws and justice for girls in schools and colleges,' she said. The commission will introduce a new and effective Women's Commission to the public, unlike anything seen before. The commission will reassure women and stand by victims. It is essential for the Women's Commission, which works for women's rights, protection and welfare, to remain impartial and independent, free from political pressure, Sailaja said.
