Salem City Police to install ANPR cameras on national highways to detect speeding vehicles
The Salem City Police will soon install eight Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at Erumapalayam Junction on the Salem-Ulundurpet National Highway, and at Ariyanoor on the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway to detect speeding vehicles. Apart from the traffic signals at 31 places, the police have installed 24 ANPR cameras at 12 locations at Five Roads Junction, including the two-tier flyover, to identify and fine motorists violating helmet and seat belt rules. Now, steps are being taken to prevent accidents on the national highways passing through the city police limits. The police have placed barricades to ensure vehicles move only at a permitted speed. However, accidents are common, especially during nights, on the Salem-Ulundurpet National Highway and the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway. In a move to prevent accidents, the city police have decided to install ANPR cameras at two locations. Salem City Police officials said four ANPR cameras will be installed at Erumapalayam Junction near Seelanaickenpatti, and four cameras at Ariyanoor at a total cost of ₹10 lakh. The cameras will be installed by the second week of August. According to the police, 700 to 800 vehicles pass through these highways every day over the permitted speed level of 80 kmph. After the installation of these ANPR cameras, the speeding vehicles will be tracked and fined, they said.
