Podanur Station to be developed as second terminal over the next three years: Southern Railway General Manager
Development of Podanur Station as a second terminal will be carried out over the next three years, Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh said on Tuesday. A sum of ₹100 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose. The project at Podanur Station envisages start and stoppage of trains, as in Coimbatore Junction Railway Station, Mr. Singh said, after inspecting the works in progress under the Amrit Bharat Station Development Scheme at the station, where the works for improving passenger conveniences were initiated at a cost of ₹ 24 crore in 2023. Mr. Singh took stock of the progress in the works on installation of lifts, re-laying of platforms and other passenger conveniences. Accompanied by Panna Lal, Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division, and N. Ganga Raju, Chief Project Manager, Mr. Singh proceeded to Coimbatore North after a stopover at the Coimbatore Junction Railway Station. At Coimbatore North, the senior officials inspected the works on lifts, waiting rooms, extension of platforms, and other modernisation works for passenger convenience and comfort. The officials will also be inspecting the Mettupalayam, Coonoor and Ooty railway stations that are also being modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Development Scheme on Wednesday and Thursday, sources added. Earlier, the officials inspected the Tiruppur Railway Station to take stock of the pace of works under way at a cost of ₹ 15 crore. Works on re-laying of platforms, construction of retiring rooms, air-conditioned waiting rooms, escalators, lifts and passenger reservation centre are in progress. The officials exuded hope that the works will be completed over the next six months.

Development works at Erode Railway Junction inspected
Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh on Tuesday inspected various development works under way at Erode Junction railway station. He was accompanied by Panna Lal, Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division and N. Ganga Raju, Chief Project Manager. Mr. Singh reviewed ongoing works, including platform shelter installation, platform renovation, construction of toilets on platforms 1 and 2, the newly established two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking stands, the improved circulating area, upgrades to waiting rooms, seating arrangements, drinking water facilities, and the extension of the portico. Officials briefed him on the status of each project, and the General Manager instructed them to ensure timely completion as per schedule. Erode Junction is among the stations being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme of Indian Railways, which focuses on modernisation and enhanced passenger amenities.

Over 15,500 students to write NEET in Salem and Namakkal districts
A total of 15,738 students are going to write the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in Salem and Namakkal districts on Sunday. A preparatory meeting on NEET was held at the Salem Collectorate on Saturday. At the meeting, District Collector R. Brindha Devi said a total of 9,731 candidates would write the exams in 22 centres in the district. Students should reach the examination centre before the time mentioned in the admit card. District-level officials were appointed to monitor the exam centres. Instructions were given to officials of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Salem Division, to run special buses based on requirements on Sunday. Similarly, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board had been directed to ensure uninterrupted power supply to exam centres and question paper centres. Instructions were given to police to provide protection for the exam centres and question paper centres. The Fire and Rescue Services had also been instructed to keep fire engines ready wherever required. Officials were instructed to ensure basic amenities like drinking water in the exam centres, Ms. Brindha Devi added. In the meeting, District Revenue Officer R. Ravikumar and officials from departments concerned participated. In Namakkal district, 6,007 students will write NEET in 14 exam centres. Two invigilators were provided to each hall and every exam centres would be monitored by Tahsildars. For three exam centres each, an official in the rank of DRO was appointed an 24 candidates would be allowed to write exams in each hall. Apart from this, two officials from the National Testing Agency would monitor each centre.
