NHS to get technology fast lane to roll out new equipment more quickly after it passes trials
THE NHS will get a technology fast lane to roll out new equipment more quickly after it passes trials. The 'innovator passport' is part of Health Secretary Wes Streeting 's bid to cut red tape and modernise the service. 1 He said: 'For too long, Britain 's leading scientific minds have been held back by needless admin. 'Suppliers are repeatedly asked for the same data in different formats by different trusts. 'These innovator passports will save time and reduce duplication, meaning our life sciences sector can work hand in hand with the health service and make Britain a powerhouse for medical technology." Under the new system, sign-off from one central office after a pilot trial will be enough for something to be funded and used nationwide. Examples of kit not yet being widely used despite successful trials include better wound dressings and rapid flu tests. Mr Streeting added 'Frustrated patients will no longer have to face a postcode lottery for lifesaving products.' Sam Roberts, chief of spending watchdog the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, said: 'Access to life-changing technologies that address the most urgent needs will no longer be a case of a postcode lottery. 'Patients will get access wherever they live, the NHS will get better value by buying at scale, and we can stop relying on outdated tools that lead to poorer outcomes.'

What's happening in Calgary on Canada Day 2025
The City of Calgary says this year's Canada Day celebrations will be bigger and more interactive than in years past, featuring fun for all ages. Calgary's 2025 Canada Day celebrations will take place at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (formerly Fort Calgary), St. Patrick's Island and the Municipal Building, and include everything from a performance by Sam Roberts Band to a powwow – and, of course, fireworks. Main Stage Show The Confluence will be the site of the Sam Roberts performance. The Main Stage, which is free, offers an all-Canadian lineup of musicians. Performances start at 3:20 p.m., with Roberts taking the stage at 9:45 p.m. The Confluence will also be home to a powwow, food vendors and an Indigenous artisans market. St. Patrick's Island There will be three stages set up on St. Patrick's Island to showcase live music. In addition, attendees can get airbrush tattoos or have their face painted. There's a playground and spots to have a picnic, plus there will be food vendors. Municipal Building Calgary's downtown Municipal Building will be home to a spotlight on cultural clothing, giving attendees a chance to try them on and capture the moment in a photo booth. Fireworks Calgary's Canada Day celebrations will wrap up with a fireworks display launched from Stampede Park at 11 p.m. The city says the best viewing will be from the Confluence, or anywhere where you can typically see Stampede fireworks. Onsite viewing at Stampede will not be available. For a complete schedule of Canada Day events, you can visit the City of Calgary's website. Officials say Canada Day serves as the kickoff to the downtown summer festival season. 'Festivals are powerful drivers for tourism, creating opportunities for visitors to connect, explore and extend their stay,' said Alisha Reynolds, Tourism Calgary president and CEO, in a Tuesday news release. 'Festivals and events are key to a vibrant downtown,' added Mark Garner, executive director of the Calgary Downtown Association. 'More people in the area will lead to increased economic activity for businesses.' More information on Calgary's summer festival season is available online.

Residents react as busy Wrexham road to close for two months
The Leader recently reported that Dean Road was set to close for a period of 61 days from June 16. That is because Wales & West Utilities is working to replace the gas mains underneath the carriageway. The road is now closed from the Greyhound Roundabout in a northerly direction towards Jeffreys Road. The alternative route for vehicles affected by the closure is via Borras Road, Rhosnesni Lane, A5152 Chester Road/Powell Road/Bodhyfryd and A534 Holt Road. And, although pedestrian access is being maintained throughout the period of closure, residents have still been left frustrated by the move. Many of them have been getting in touch with us to share their views. Dean Road, Wrexham (Image: Google Streetview) Sue Breese described it as a 'nightmare' for residents living in Borras, while Sam Roberts added; "It's a nightmare when using the scout hut and I'm sure it will affect the shop too!" Lynn Alison told us; "I've never known a road to have as many road closures as this one." Charlotte Powell added: "And part of the Holt Road is one way. Absolute chaos." Barry Turnbull said: "Why can't they wait for the schools to end first?" Michelle Bee added: "It was a nightmare the last time they shut that road. I'm glad my son has finished school and I won't be having to drive that route! Good luck, and my deepest sympathy for the residents and other road users." Wales & West Utilities began the £260,000 project on Holt Road back in April and, barring any engineering difficulties, it will finish by the end of September. The gas emergency and pipeline service has liaised with Wrexham Council to plan the project, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place throughout. TOP STORIES Wales & West Utilities Adam Smith is managing this work and said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. "We'll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum. "While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the wider Wrexham area. Whether it's heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it." Their customer service team is ready to take your call if you have any questions about the work via 0800 912 2999.

Two men shot outside Gary truck stop
Gary Police are searching for the suspect or suspects who shot two other men at a Gary truck stop Monday night. Officers were dispatched around 9:31 pm June 16 to the Pilot Travel Center, 2501 Burr St., for two shooting victims, Gary Police spokesman Cpt. Sam Roberts said in a press release. One of the victims told police that several men in a dark SUV started shooting at them as the two walked across the parking lot, and he ran into the business and hid in the Pilot bathroom, Roberts said in the release. The other victim, however, refused to give police information; officers recovered a handgun from one of the victims, Roberts said. A local business gave officers video footage, which a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee speeding away from the area at the time of the shooting, Roberts said in the release.
