Sam Young claims art expo award
Sam Young was presented with the People's Choice winner's certificate by Mark Glanville, representing award sponsor John Rhind Kaiapoi, at the Corcoran French Kaiapoi Art Expo in Kaiapoi. PHOTO: NIKKI PARKER A Canterbury artist's work has won the hearts of visitors to the Corcoran French Kaiapoi Art Expo. Mandeville artist Sam Young's painting Incapable of Change was named the People's Choice award winner. It was the first time Sam - who was the guest artist at the 2023 expo - had won the prestigious award. ''I was runner up a few years ago, so it was great to get the most votes this time around,'' he says. ''I was very pleased with how this piece turned out and I was excited to get it on display to see how people reacted to it and it obviously stood out enough to get the votes.'' Sam always looks forward to the expo. ''It is a well-run event and is a great asset for the Waimakariri art scene.'' This year's event was held upstairs in the Kaiapoi Club. It ''couldn't have gone much better'' for Sam who also sold all of his pieces. ''It is always very satisfying selling out at a show and I really appreciate all the people who come through the doors to either buy art or to just have a look or to laugh at my stupid bio,'' he says. The expo, which was established in 2006, was organised by the Waimakariri Arts Trust and attracted large crowds to the town. ''Kaiapoi was absolutely buzzing,'' said WAT chair Jackie Watson. ''So many people took the opportunity to be inspired by our huge number of talented local artists. Every year the standard improves.'' Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon, who is known for purchasing local art and is a WAT trustee, was a guest speaker on the opening night of the expo last Friday. He said the small group of art lovers got together 19 years ago to see how they could promote art in Waimakariri - but never dreamed the expo would have such longevity. ''We never thought it would last this long or be so successful when we established it,'' he said. However, the popularity of the expo shows how art is very important to the community, too. Next year the expo will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Plans are already under way to hold an art extravaganza even more spectacular than the recent event.

‘Big' Sam Young and partner Grace Chen are opening a Chinese restaurant in Potts Point
If you're not following chef-owner-restaurateur-lobster-enthusiast 'Big' Sam Young on Instagram, what have you been doing? The co-owner of Castlecrag's luxe bistro S'more – known for its top-quality produce, bougie offerings and truffle-on-everything energy – posts non-stop pictures of delicious food and private dinners at multi-million-dollar homes. He's also prolific when it comes to being a hustler, which comes from his lived experience of moving to Australia from Hong Kong at 13 – only to have everything, including his passport and money, stolen days later. Being an immigrant and working hard has shaped his ethos. Now, he and partner Grace Chen are opening their second venue dedicated to that journey: a Chinese restaurant called Young's Palace, opening this August in the excellent former home of Raja and Teddy on Kellett Street in Potts Point. 'We've been sold this outdated image of immigrant-run restaurants as cheap, fast and scrappy. That was survival. But now, we want to tell a new story – one that honours hard work but also values quality, creativity and pride,' Sam says, who has also spent time in the kitchens of Queen Chow and Lotus. Young's Palace is also inspired by the couple's travels – particularly the Chinatowns they've explored in cities like Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Vancouver and Sydney. 'Grace and I always find ourselves hunting down a plate of fried rice or chow mein, no matter where we are in the world. Young's Palace is about recreating that joy – classic Chinese dishes that are simple, comforting and utterly craveable,' says Sam. Sam says don't expect laminated menus with a hundred-plus options, fluorescent lighting or any compromise on quality for convenience. And absolutely no modern Asian-fusion. What you can expect, however, are two menus: one with nostalgic crowd favourites – think sweet and sour pork, honey king prawns, General Tao's chicken and lemon chicken – and the 'Chairman's Menu', which is BSY to a T: luxe dishes like lobster, giant mud crab and claypot abalone rice crowned with truffles and caviar. 'There's no reason a bowl of noodles can't be treated with the same respect and price tag as a plate of pasta. We're not here to follow rules. We're here to create something we're proud of,' adds Sam. See you there later this year!

‘Big' Sam Young set to open old-school Chinese restaurant
Sydney chef 'Big' Sam Young, who operates the attention-grabbing S'more bistro on the north shore and boasts a substantial social media following, is set to open an old-school Chinese restaurant at Potts Point. Young and his long-term partner, talented chef Grace Chen, confirmed the site they've zeroed in on is well-known Sydney dining turf: the current home of Teddy, on leafy Kellett Street. The owners of Ezra restaurant next door opened Teddy last September after briefly operating Raja, an upmarket Indian restaurant, at the site. It's familiar territory for Young, who cut his teeth at nearby Merivale venues Lotus and Ms.G's, before breaking out on their own during the pandemic, segueing into takeaway meals, indulgent pop-ups and their Castlecrag start-up. The venture would be 'old-school Chinese, probably more suburban [in style],' Young said, echoing a job advertisement he recently placed looking to recruit chefs.
