‘Swadeshi' is soul of India: Governor
1 2 Patna: Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Sunday said the concept of "swadeshi" lies at the heart of India's cultural identity. Speaking at the 'Swadeshi Shankhnaad' programme organised by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch at the legislative council auditorium, he said the values of self-reliance and indigenous pride had been deeply embedded in India's civilisational heritage. "The culture of India is a living example of swadeshi. There is swadeshi pride in every structure from the Ramayana and Mahabharata periods. Foreigners came and went, but our swadeshi pride remains alive even today," the governor said. Deputy CM and senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary highlighted Bihar's growing role as a hub for swadeshi production. "Bihari talent is recognised everywhere. Our people are extremely intelligent. Prosperity will only come when there is work in every hand," he said. Referring to economic development under the NDA govt, he added, "When we came to power, Bihar's GDP was Rs 6,000 crore. Today, it has crossed Rs 3 lakh crore." Choudhary, who also holds the finance portfolio, noted that while people from Bihar had historically migrated to other states and enhanced productivity there, the swadeshi movement now aimed to generate employment locally through self-reliance. State industries minister Nitish Mishra said the govt had introduced an incentive policy to promote local product-based manufacturing in every district. "Our govt is committed to investing Rs 1 lakh crore in swadeshi industries by next year. This will create job opportunities within Bihar itself," he said. The programme was conducted by Praveen Patel and attended by several prominent figures, including RSS Kshetra Karyawah Mohan Singh, BJP MLC Devesh Kumar, former Swadeshi Jagran Manch national convener Arun Ojha, regional organiser Ajay Upadhyay, Manch general secretary Mukund Mishra, CAT Bihar president Ashok Verma, Prince Raju, Sangeeta Jha and former MLC Upendra Prasad.

Bihar govt to name new airport after iconic peasant leader — ‘only fitting tribute'
The Bihar government has announced that the upcoming international airport at Bihta near Patna would be named after social reformer and peasant leader Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, an nationalist icon whose efforts to mobilise farmers in Bihar is credited to have led to the abolition of the Zamindari system in India. In a speech at the 75th death anniversary of Saraswati Thursday, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary — a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — said it was the only 'fitting tribute' to the ascetic, whose Shree Sitaram Ashram in Bihta still stands as a symbol of the peasant movements in 1920s and 30s that captured the popular imagination in Bihar. The announcement comes on a day when the family of Saraswati's American biographer Walter Hauser scattered his ashes in the Ganga. 'We will send a proposal to the Centre to ensure it,' the deputy chief minister said. Bihar Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, who also spoke on the occasion, said the state government was willing to help the ashram with digitisation. 'Bihar State Archives has already digitised some rare photographs of farmers' movement led by the Swami,' he said. This comes on a day when the family of the late American historian Walter Hauser, a disciple and biographer of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, scattered his ashes in the Ganga Thursday morning keeping with his last wish. Hauser died in 2019. To mark the occasion, two generations of the family – Hauser's son Michael, his sister Sheela, wife Elizabeth and niece Rosemary – have come down to India. Accompanying this group are two of Hauser's most prominent students, historians William R Pinch and Wendy Singer. 'It is the end of my father's physical journey but his legacies and eternal association with Bihar and Saraswati will remain forever,' his son Michael, a professor at the Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, said. Meanwhile, Janata Dal (United) Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary also acknowledged the growing importance of deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary within the National Democratic Alliance at the event. A Kushwaha OBC leader, Choudhary, a former Bihar BJP chief who was tasked with delivering the 2025 Assembly polls for the party, has, over the years, become one of its strongest leaders in Bihar. 'Samrat Choudhary is number two in our government,' Vijay Kumar Choudhary said at the event. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. "Forming alliance with murderers of democracy": Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary slams RJD over ties with Congress
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 26 (ANI): Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress party on the 50th anniversary of imposition of the Emergency, accusing it of 'killing democracy' and questioned its ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) for siding with those responsible. 'The people of this country watched who killed democracy. The entire nation is understanding who was responsible for destroying democracy. So they took steps to oust them from power,' Choudhary said, referring to the Emergency imposed in 1975 under the Congress-led government. He added, 'The Congress party should answer this, and the RJD should also explain how they are forming their alliance with the murderer of democracy. Lalu Yadav, who started politics under Jayaprakash Narayan's guidance, is now playing into the hands of Congress.' Choudhary's remarks came as the BJP marked June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also slammed the Congress party on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, accusing it of misleading voters in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by falsely claiming that the Constitution was in danger. 'Congress did the work of imposing Emergency in the country. The people of the country are against the Congress party. Congress is not a party with the ideology of democracy. Congress is a 'pariwarvaadi' party,' Maurya said while speaking to reporters. He added, 'What Congress has done is that in Lok Sabha 2024, they misled the public by saying that the Constitution is in danger and took votes, but when the public understood the truth, it filled the BJP's bag with huge number of votes in Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi Assembly and showed Congress its place.' Between 25 June 1975 and 21 March 1977, India was placed under a state of Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution. On 25 June 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. This was the third Emergency in India's history, but the first one declared in peacetime. Earlier proclamations were during wars with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971). Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the 50th anniversary of the Emergency to divert public attention from issues like unemployment, inflation and demonetisation. Kharge said the Modi-led government was trying to cover up its 'failures and repeated lies' by marking the day as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' and focusing on a chapter of history that had ended decades ago.
