(Photos: AsiaBasket/FB) Colegio de San Juan de Letran and San Beda University are marching to the semifinals of the Asiabasket 2025 International Invitational after escaping separate foes in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Knights outlasted the Formosa King Tigers with a narrow 104-100 win behind a near double-double outing from big man Kevin Santos, who posted 19 points together with nine rebound, three blocks, one assist, and one steal to power the quarterfinal victory. A Santos layup late in the first quarter sent the Knights to a huge 20-point lead at 35-15, but the visiting club slowly crawled its way back as Tseng Hsiang Weii converted a basket that trimmed their deficit to three, 96-99, in the final 1:11 of the fourth. Santos then provided the timely baskets, sinking a pair of free throws before throwing down a dunk that saw Letran taking a crucial 103-96 lead with 41 ticks left. Luis Tapenio shone as well with 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists while Jimboy Estrada and Deo Cuajao chipped in 10 and nine markers apiece. Meanwhile, San Beda eked out a 68-58 win against United Prep Canada behind the tandem of Bryan Sajonia and Yuki Andrada. Sajonia led the charge with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds laced with four assists, two steals, and one block while the graduating Andrada churned out 16 markers, two boards, one dime, and one block. Letran and San Beda will now cross paths with UAAP teams with the Knights facing Adamson University and the Red Lions squaring off with University of Santo Tomas both on Thursday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

San Beda completes comeback vs. Mapua to snap skid

Zedjay Etulle capped off a mighty San Beda University comeback against Mapua University, 73-72, as the Red Lions broke out of slump in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Saturday. The 6-foot-5 wingman dropped a floater off an offensive rebound and assist from veteran Yukien Andrada, giving San Beda a 73-71 lead with 23 seconds left in the fourth period. Although Etulle wasn't able to sink the free throw, it was enough to salvage the Red Lions as Clint Escamis misfired a desperate three-pointer. The win allowed San Beda to come back from 12 points down, thanks to a masterful fourth quarter that saw the wards of head coach Yuri Escueta unleash 21 points while limiting the reigning NCAA champions to just eight. Andrada led the charge with 16 points laced with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Jomel Puno and Agjanti Miller scattered 14 and 13 markers apiece as they snapped out of two-game slide to improve to 2-3. Etulle, meanwhile, finished with 11 points, two rebounds, and two dimes in just 14 minutes of action. The Cardinals, who absorbed their second straight defeat on the way to a 4-4 card, leaned on Cyril Gonzales, who posted 23 points while Joe Gulapa listed 13. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

(Photo: Filoil EcoOil Sports/FB) Sean Salvador sizzled from downtown to power Jose Rizal University to a 75-74 come-from-behind overtime victory over San Beda University in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday. The young guard made a statement in his tournament debut for the Heavy Bombers, exploding for seven three-pointers en route to 25 points, along with three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. With the former Mapua Red Robin catching fire from beyond the arc, JRU rolled to its second straight win, improving to 3-5, while San Beda absorbed its third loss in four games. The 19-year-old Salvador came to life late in the third quarter, igniting JRU's rally from a 16-point deficit after San Beda big man Bismarck Lina extended the Red Lions to a 56-40 lead. Salvador sparked the fuse with back-to-back triples while Jay Garupil joined the long-range party with one of his own as the Heavy Bombers trimmed the gap to 56-49 entering the final frame. Salvador then fired another pair of triple to tie things up at 66-all and drag the Red Lions to overtime. Jayson Castillo opened the extra period with two free throws before Salvador gave JRU a 71-66 advantage off another basket from beyond the arc. Two more JRU backcourt weapons in Yuri Duque and Shawn Argente delivered the finishing blow, calmly sinking two free throws each to seal the win despite a last-gasp triple from Yukien Andrada with just 0.2 seconds left. Garupil, a former Letran Knight, was steady with his 14-point outing while Argente and Duque chipped in 12 and 11 markers each in the wild comeback victory. Jomel Puno paced San Beda with 23 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal while Andrada flirted with a double-double effort of 10 markers and nine boards. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Kungfu Reyes named new head coach of rebuilding San Beda Lady Red Spikers

NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News From tigers' lair to the lions' den. Kungfu Reyes is bringing his coaching brilliance to Mendiola after being tapped to be the new head coach of San Beda University women's volleyball team. The school announced the development on Saturday as the Lady Red Spikers try to revive their program following years of consecutive Final Four misses in the NCAA. Reyes, who recently dropped his women's coaching duty with University of Santo Tomas to focus on being the program director, now became the fifth head coach of San Beda in the last five seasons. Nemesio Gavino called the shots when the league returned after the pandemic in Season 97 before he was replaced by Ariel Dela Cruz in Season 98. Dela Cruz didn't last long either after San Beda tapped renowned tactician Edgar Barroga in Season 99 until the latter was let go midway through Season 100. Joshua Noda then came in as the interim head coach, leading the Lady Red Spikers to a 4-14 win-loss record finish in the centennial edition. Reyes will inherit a core led by incoming third-year outside spiker Angel Habacon alongside Janelle Bachar, Rianne Bedural, and Patricia Hiponia as San Beda looks to restore its winning ways. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
