Mahershala Ali Gives Unfortunate Update On MCU ‘Blade' Delay

Luke Cage A Blade movie starring Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali seemed like as much of a slam dunk as anything in the MCU. But after delays and departures and tests of the star's patience, it still seems to be nowhere. Six years after Ali was brought out on stage at San Diego Comic-Con to announce his role in a Blade film, the actor has given an update that suggests the movie remains stuck, despite him still being up for playing the part. Ali is now starring in Jurassic World Rebirth and was asked on the red carpet a few times about Blade: 'Call Marvel,' he told Variety. 'I'm ready. Let them know I'm ready.' 'I would love for it to happen, we'll see, I don't know where Marvel is at right now,' he told THR. (Photo by JC Olivera/FilmMagic) The fact that the star does not appear to be looped into whatever is going on with the film is not promising. Blade is not slated for any release date, and the film has now lost two directors since 2022. Years ago, the movie was supposed to be out in November 2023. Then it was pushed to November 2025. Now it's been pushed off a cliff, seemingly. Another bit of news was made this week with writer of the original Blade, David S. Goyer commented on the delay, even saying he tried to help Marvel out himself, but was rebuffed. "In my mind, I think Blade is a relatively simple story," Goyer said on Happy Sad Confused. "It's not complicated. And I always think when you embark on a movie like this, you have to distill down what is the promise of the movie." "It should have insane ass-kicking," he said. "It should be pretty scary. Might be R-rated. And it doesn't have to be, it should not be complicated." Blade And speaking to Variety: 'I had my agent call Marvel and say, 'Do you guys need any help?' And they said, 'We love you, but we think we've cracked it now, and we're in a good place.' And then the latest thing happened. And so no, they haven't contacted me.' Goyer was a writer on all three Wesley Snipes Blade films and directed Trinity. The first being released in 1998, the modern superhero landscape owes a lot to those films, as that was pre-Spider-Man, even pre-X-Men, and way, way predating the MCU that can now not figure out how to make this work despite a 'simple story' and an Oscar-winner waiting for them to get it together. It seems like they never will at this point. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

San Diego Comic-Con 2025 panels include Space Command and Apex Comics exclusives

While the full schedule for San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2025 will officially drop between July 10–13, early announcements from studios, publishers, and creators have already begun trickling in. The annual pop culture event returns this July, and fans are keeping close tabs on which properties will appear during the convention. A regularly updated master list of confirmed panels was shared by Kerry Dixon via the SDCC Blog, compiling all known details so far. The convention kicks off with Preview Night on Wednesday, July 23, though no specific panels have been announced yet for that day. With Preview Night typically limited in scope, the bulk of programming begins Thursday with a variety of confirmed panels across television, comics, and books. The television slate includes a confirmed panel for Space Command, scheduled at 10:00 a.m. in the Neil Morgan Auditorium. In the comics and books category, Apex Comics Group is hosting a major session from 4:00–5:00 p.m. in Room 23ABC. Publisher Mariano Nicieza will be joined by creators including S.G. Blaise, Jessica Court, Ariel Olivetti, and Scott Hanna, among others. The session will feature exclusive premieres of titles like Phazer: Time Force, Seven Galaxies, and The R.I.G.H.T. Project, as well as retro-inspired revivals such as ColecoVision Air Raiders and Cosmic Avenger. Collectible action figures tied to these properties will also be showcased. Later that evening, horror fans can look forward to Creeping It Real: How Horror Comics Heal and Connect Us at 6:00 p.m. in Room 29AB. Notable guests include Philip Kobylanski (The Walking Dead), BJ McDonnell (Studio 666), and Sean Sobczak, with Jim Ousley moderating. Marvel Skipping Comic-Con's Hall H This Year

Marvel will not need a spot in San Diego Comic-Con's cavernous Hall H this year, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes as Disney and Marvel last week pushed the release date of its next big Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, to a December 2026 release, meaning the studio will have Comic-Con 2026 to rev up fans. Sources said that led to the decision to sit out this year's event, which runs July 24-27. More from Deadline Disney Pushes Next Two 'Avengers' Movies; Dates 'The Dog Stars' & 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' How to Watch the Marvel Movies in Chronological Order Ex-'Doctor Odyssey' Crew Members Sue Disney, 20th TV Claiming Sexual Harassment And Wrongful Termination Marvel will still have a presence at the fan confab, we understand, with its usual panels around the brand's comics and games. There are also plans for booth promoting the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the franchise reboot that hits theaters that Friday. It was at last year's Comic-Con during its traditional Saturday night Hall H presentation where Marvel revealed two new Avengers movies — Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars — and revealed that Robert Downey Jr would play Doctor Doom. Avengers: Doomsday now has a December 18, 2026 release date, while Secret Wars is set for December 17, 2027. Marvel's most recent movie, the May 1-released Thunderbolts*, has grossed $359.3 million to date. If a no-Avengers-no-Hall-H scenario sounds familiar, it is: Marvel skipped its Hall H slot in 2011 because the original The Avengers was still in production, and passed again in 2015 and 2018. It also skipped 2020 and 2021 because of Covid and 2023 because of the Hollywood strikes. Next up on the fan confab for Marvel is Team Fantastic Four showing up at CCXP Mexico on Saturday.
