Apple Renews MURDERBOT for Season 2 — More Existential Angst and Futuristic Soap Operas on the Way — GeekTyrant

Before Murderbot has even wrapped its first season, Apple TV+ has already given the green light for more. Season 2 is officially happening, and fans can expect even more sardonic AI introspection, awkward human interactions, and binge-worthy space dramas (yes, we're talking about Sanctuary Moon). Based on Martha Wells' Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novella All Systems Red , the show follows a rogue security unit voiced and played by Alexander Skarsgård that's hacked its own governor module, gained sentience, and would honestly just rather be left alone to stream intergalactic soap operas than deal with humans. Unfortunately, humans keep needing saving. Apple announced the renewal ahead of the Season 1 finale on July 11. The series, a mix of biting humor and poignant sci-fi existentialism, was created by Chris and Paul Weitz, who serve as showrunners and directors. They also executive produce alongside Skarsgård, and David S. Goyer. In a joint statement, the Weitz brothers said: 'We're so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received, and delighted that we're getting to go back to Martha Wells' world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team.' Apple's head of programming, Matt Cherniss, added: 'Chris, Paul, Alexander and the entire Murderbot team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere. We can't wait to unveil what's next for Murderbot and, of course, 'Sanctuary Moon' in Season 2.' The cast also includes Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski. Season 2 is set to dive even deeper into the strange space between cold machine logic and the emotional messiness of being… well, human-adjacent. So if you've been rooting for a misanthropic robot with a heart it refuses to acknowledge, Murderbot will be back to serve up more deadpan existential dread and space drama next season. MURDERBOT Recap: (S01E08) Foreign Object

Murderbot Season 1 Episode 8, 'Foreign Object,' delivers a handful of narrative revelations, from confirmation of Gurathin's love for Mensah (although, let's be real, this was evident from the get-go) to SecUnit slaughtering 57 miners. That last one is a doozy. We finally have context regarding those violent flashbacks. Additionally, our resident throuple attempts to call it quits, and the alien remnants are back in the conversation. Oh, and Leebeebee's employer? A shady mining company. It's a lot . But damn, is it fun. I love this show. RELATED: Read our recap of the previous Murderbot episode, 'Complementary Species' Murderbot, 'Foreign Object' We open with a scene from The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon . The lieutenant (Clark Gregg) is now the captain after the Navigation Unit (DeWanda Wise) decapitated the former captain (John Cho). However, he wiped the Nav Bot's memories, so she won't go all homicidal again. He tries to reassure the crew of this, but the Navigation Officer (Jack McBrayer) isn't so certain. The captain urges the crew to forge ahead (Boldness is all, right?). He tells the Nav Bot to smile, which she does — creepily. Instead of sending the ship through the wormhole, the Navigation Unit has them skirting the event horizon. So, they're stuck … forever. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 8, 'Foreign Object' — Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Plot Twist Then, the Nav Bot proceeds to kill the crew. She zeroes in on the captain, though, and we learn that she didn't kill the former captain/her lover — he did. So, the Navigation Unit pops his head like a zit. DeWanda Wise is amazing in this few-minute scene. She kills it (literally). RELATED: Alexander Skarsgård Goes Rogue in Murderbot Trailer Unfortunately, Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård) can't finish the episode to see how it all plays out. Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) interrupts it. We see our PresAux gang has parked the hopper a safe distance from the habitat. Gurathin (David Dastmalchian) isn't doing so well. He needs the med bay now. Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) offers to scour the area for any hostiles. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 8, 'Foreign Object' — Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ However, SecUnit remarks that it doesn't see any vehicles. It grabs the camera it installed nearby that collects footage from the habitat. Mensah, Ratthi and Murderbot rejoin Arada (Tattiawna Jones), Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu), Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) and Gurathin inside the hopper. They watch the footage. GrayCris In it, a few SecUnits, much like the rogue ones who attacked our crew, enter the habitat, followed by real humans. Pin-Lee researches the insignia on their clothing. They're from GrayCris, a mining company. Their leader (Amanda Brugel) addresses the gang. She admits to dismantling PresAux and DeltFall's beacons. However, they killed Leebeebee, so she declares they should call it a wash. RELATED: David Dastmalchian Joins Apple TV+ Murderbot Adaptation If our heroes want to get off the planet, the GrayCris leader states they must cooperate. She sends them a designated meeting location and time where they can hash this out. She insists this is a misunderstanding. As a gesture of good faith, GrayCris will depart their habitat. 'This doesn't have to end in violence,' the GrayCris leader says, causing our titular bot to scoff in disbelief. Mensah insists they get Gurathin down to the habitat now. Everyone debates whether they can trust GrayCris to leave, or if they're lying in wait to attack. Murderbot decides to survey the area itself. (Sorry, Ratthi.) MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 8, 'Foreign Object' — Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Dangerous Procedure After concluding that the habitat is safe, the PresAux crew returns with Gurathin. They set him up in the med bay. Bharadwaj informs the group that Gurathin has gas gangrene — a projectile from the skirmish with the rogue SecUnit embedded itself in Gurathin's leg wound. However, Bharadwaj can remove it. RELATED: New TV Shows This Week (June 22 – 28) Gurathin insists on no painkillers because he's a recovering addict. Mensah honors this. Murderbot believes it can block Gurathin's central nervous system to prevent pain. After all, Gurathin is an augmented human. SecUnit insists it only needs to plug into Gurathin. It's done this before. Mensah hopes it didn't get this idea from a Sanctuary Moon episode. (Okay, it was episode 502 of Medcenter Argala .) SecUnit and Gurathin connect via hardwire. Now, Murderbot has access to Gurathin's database, as it were. We finally get confirmation that Gurathin carries a torch for Mensah. And it's unrequited. Ouch. Murderbot finds itself saying 'I love you,' echoing one of Gurathin's memories. It's quite emotional. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 8, 'Foreign Object' — Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ A Revelation Thankfully, Bharadwaj works quickly, removing the projectile in no time. She urges Gurathin and SecUnit to unlink. However, Gurathin decides to do a little snooping. That's when he taps into SecUnit's violent history. Those flashbacks Murderbot keeps having throughout the series? A memory of it killing 57 miners during a mining expedition. RELATED: On Location: The Lighterman in Apple TV+'s Slow Horses Gurathin tells the others what he saw. He adds that SecUnit calls itself 'Murderbot.' Naturally, the PresAux crew is horrified. SecUnit tries to explain itself. It has killed before, yes, but only to protect its clients. To it, that's not murder. 'It's debatable,' Pin-Lee remarks. SecUnit claims it's not a certainty that it murdered those 57 people. Gurathin pours salt in the wound, declaring that perhaps Murderbot is a faulty sentient construct. A malfunctioning machine that will inevitably turn on them. This moment mirrors the scene from Sanctuary Moon at the beginning of the episode. Murderbot storms out. Aliens and Throuples The team debates whether they need Murderbot. Can they go on without it? Should they still plan to meet GrayCris at the rendezvous point? Meanwhile, SecUnit goes for a walk to clear its head, playing clips from its favorite shows to alleviate its anxiety. It realizes it needs its clients to get off this planet. RELATED: On Location: The Phoenicia Diner on Apple TV+'s Severance At the same time, Pin-Lee explains why the Company wouldn't be involved in something like this. The DeltFall massacre reflects poorly on them. Dead people are bad for business. So, what does GrayCris want? Ratthi mentions the alien remnants that Mensah discovered. That could be enough to kill over. Next, Pin-Lee and Arada believe it's time to end the throuple arrangement. Ratthi enters their bedroom and voices the same sentiment, much to their relief. He claims it's because he's fallen in love with Pin-Lee. Of course, we know Arada has a crush on Ratthi. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 8, 'Foreign Object' — Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ I Have a Plan Regardless, these feelings certainly muddy the relationship waters a bit. Pin-Lee asks Arada if she doesn't find them attractive. She seems to be incredulous that Ratthi would be smitten with Pin-Lee. Ratthi insists they can all talk about this. Not now, though, because they might die. RELATED: Read our Murderbot recaps Suddenly, it dawns on Murderbot that it doesn't have to die. Sure, its clients might bite the dust, but that doesn't mean it has to. It's the author of its own story. Meanwhile, Gurathin and Bharadwaj insist everyone gather their supplies and flee. Mensah offers to meet with the GrayCris leader. Murderbot returns to the habitat to inform the PresAux crew of its plan. Does it involve murder? Who knows. Murderbot – Season 1 Episode 8 Recap & Review

Foreign Object Episode 8 of Murderbot begins with more Sanctuary Moon, as Nav Seven is under the command of the new Captain… or is it? The bot goes mad, sabotaging the ship, getting them stuck in an event horizon and killing everybody onboard. Murderbot is snapped back to reality when we learn Gurathin is not doing well. His temperature is spiking and even worse, when they check the surveillance logs, they find three SecUnits at their habitat. Doing some research, they find out that the bots actually originate from a Mining Company called GrayCris. They're the ones who destroyed the beacon and they also happen to be working with LeeBeeBee. The leader speaks to them via video, explaining that all of this has been one big misunderstanding and they do intend to leave their habitat. She sends over a rendezvous point and the group are pretty confident they can survive this, but given how they fared in their last bout, that's far from the truth. Murderbot realizes that there's no talking them out of this, so he decides to survey the area before they head to the habitat. Inside, the group work together to try and fix up Gurathin. He refuses painkillers and both he and Murderbot come up with the same solution at once. They deduce they can block the central nervous system of an augmented human to stop the pain. This would involve Murderbot plugging into Gurathin this time. Murderbot is confused by the 'organic goo of feelings' that Gurathin has and begins saying 'why don't you love me back,' out loud. This is, of course, Gurathin's subconscious talking to Mensah. It's pretty awkward, especially when that connection goes the other way and Gurathin sees the bloodshed and chaos in Murderbot's past with the mining colony. Even worse, Gurathin reveals that this SecUnit calls itself Murderbot because of this incident. As they go over the reasons for Murderbot thinking this way, it believes it may be one thought away from killing them all and going defective. As a result, it decides to walk away from the Preservation Society. Murderbot wanders around aimlessly, while the Preservation Society contemplate whether to bring it back, knowing that they both need each other at the moment. Murderbot has an idea, and decides to create a new story to usurp the company. When it heads back to base, the others are pretty spooked to see it. The Episode Review We hit a turning point this week as Murderbot decides to step it up a gear and branch out into unknown territory. It's very clearly going to be working with the Preservation Society going forward to hit back against the company. We still don't know what's happened with this mining colony though, nor do we actually know whether Murderbot killed those miners willingly or whether it's part of a bigger conspiracy. What we do know however, is that Murderbot – despite initially claiming to dislike these guys – clearly wants to protect the Preservation Society and likes them. Overall, this has been another good episode, leaving everything wide open for where it may go next. Previous Episode Next Episode Expect A Full Season Write-Up When This Season Concludes!

MURDERBOT Recap: (S01E06) Command Feed

Murderbot Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed,' is wall-to-wall narrative action. Not a minute is wasted. The outing also deftly balances that story movement with character development, particularly for Mensah. I love her burgeoning bond with SecUnit and how that takes shape this week. Anna Konkle also proves her versatility, doing quite the heel turn as Leebeebee's true motivations come to the fore. RELATED: Read our recap of the previous Murderbot episode, 'Rogue War Tracker Infinite' Murderbot, 'Command Feed' We open with a scene from episode 356 of The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon , featuring Flight Captain Hossein (John Cho) and Navigation Unit (DeWanda Wise). They're stranded on a planet. SecUnit (Alexander Skarsgård) tells us this is a crucial turning point in their romance. Hossein tells Navigation Unit a joke, causing her to laugh awkwardly. It's a love story for the (space) ages. In real life, SecUnit and Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) narrowly evaded death by explosion after a mysterious someone took out the emergency beacon. Unfortunately, the hopper is out of commission. Sure, it's structurally sound, but it can't fly at the moment. Mensah remarks that SecUnit has something protruding from its abdomen — a piece of the printer. Eh, it's fine. Make Room for TV Mensah asks if our titular bot has copies of the repair manual in its system. Murderbot admits it cleared said copies to make room for Season 19 of Sanctuary Moon . Mensah is incredulous. How could it shirk its responsibilities in favor of binge-watching a crappy show? Hey, Sanctuary Moon is quality entertainment. Mensah decides to fix the hopper herself. SecUnit removes the printer fragment from its abdomen; unfortunately, it starts to leak lubricant. Uh-oh. RELATED: Alexander Skarsgård Goes Rogue in Murderbot Trailer Meanwhile, back at the PresAux habitat, everyone scrambles to pack their belongings while Gurathin (David Dastmalchian) tries to ping Mensah. Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) asks Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu) and Arada (Tattiawna Jones) if they need assistance, but our fave couple assures him they're fine. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Leebeebee (Konkle) thanks Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) for allowing her to help after Gurathin rejected her. They chat about Bharadwaj's scar from the two-headed monster that attacked her. It's clearly still a traumatic memory for her. Leebeebee kisses her hand, where the scar is. Leebeebee wonders if that was too weird, but Bharadwaj reassures her that it was a sweet gesture. Just Breathe After this, Bharadwaj asks Gurathin for an update. So far, it's all radio silence. Leebeebee believes Mensah is fine — she has that cute SecUnit with her. The conversation pivots to ownership of sentient constructs and how the Corporation Rim believes they don't have rights. However, Bharadwaj thinks consent and autonomy are important. And she's right. RELATED: David Dastmalchian Joins Apple TV+ Murderbot Adaptation Then, SecUnit realizes the wires are the issue. Mensah starts having a panic attack, which she mistakes for a heart attack. SecUnit is used to protecting clients physically, so this is the first time it has observed what's transpiring internally. It reassures her that she's not having a heart attack. It pulls up an episode of Sanctuary Moon that alleviates anxiety. Mensah sits beside it and notices it quoting the episode verbatim. Mensah finds her heart rate slowing and her breathing more regulated. She smiles at SecUnit and seems to understand why it loves this show so much. This is a sweet scene. Backstory Next, SecUnit rises to its feet as it inexplicably spouts gibberish. Suddenly, it collapses. It has lost too much lubricant from the damage inflicted by the printer fragment. RELATED: New TV Shows This Week (June 8 – 14) Later, Gurathin asks Leebeebee why she joined the DeltFall survey team. She explains that DeltFall purchased her indenture from her previous employer, SysCommSols. She had four years left, but participating in this survey is knocking off time. So, she could be finished in two and a half years. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Then, Leebeebee plans to buy a license for childbirth with her earnings. Bharadwaj is confused. In the Preservation Alliance, you don't need a license to have children. There, the community comes together to help fund childcare, education, medical care, etc. The way it should be. Heel Turn The chat pivots to the gaps in the maps. DeltFall had the same issue. When the team would approach the areas omitted from the maps, the two-headed creatures tried to eat them. Then, when the team returned to the habitat, the rogue SecUnits carried out a massacre. RELATED: On Location: The Lighterman in Apple TV+'s Slow Horses Gurathin and Bharadwaj comfort Leebeebee. Well, until she produces a gun and trains it on them. Leebeebee demands that the pair give her access to their HubSystem. Meanwhile, SecUnit wakes up on the floor of the hopper. Mensah improvised — she hooked SecUnit up to the hopper, utilizing the hopper's lubricant to revive it. She figured both shared a similar lubricant. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ This gives SecUnit an idea. They could use fiber from its spine to repair the hopper. After all, human tissue is used to fuel a lot of things. It instructs Mensah to make the incision in its back, crack open its spinal cord and remove the fiber strand from there. Murderbot reassures Mensah that it turned off its pain sensors, so it won't feel a thing. Procedures and Massages Mensah understandably panics as she conducts this procedure, but she gets it done like the badass she is. At the same time, Ratthi walks in on Pin-Lee giving Arada a shoulder massage. He offers to massage Pin-Lee's shoulders. We've got a massage train here, folks. Ratthi asks Arada and Pin-Lee how they feel about SecUnit being rogue. Arada is fine with it. However, Pin-Lee is in panic mode. RELATED: On Location: The Phoenicia Diner on Apple TV+'s Severance Then, Bharadwaj calls the trio downstairs, where they discover Leebeebee is holding her and Gurathin hostage. Thankfully, SecUnit uses its fiber strand to power up the hopper, so our dynamic duo is on the way home to save the day. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Meanwhile, Leebeebee explains that Gurathin will grant her access to HubSystem, including all the maps. Gurathin claims he can't. Leebeebee shoots him in the knee. Bharadwaj instinctively moves to help him, but Leebeebee reveals that if anyone moves a muscle, she'll kill someone. Bharadwaj starts negotiating. She declares she can help Leebeebee get sanctuary on Preservation Alliance. Heads Will Explode Leebeebee asks Bharadwaj if the latter can get her millions of credits. Gurathin logs into HubSystem. Arada reminds Leebeebee that they saved her life. However, Leebeebee was never in danger. She didn't work for DeltFall. She warns that the group will meet her employer soon. Oh, and more SecUnits (probably rogue) are on the way. RELATED: Apple TV+'s Neuromancer Series Uploads 3 New Cast Members Leebeebee urges the crew to give her what she wants. They could walk away (mostly) unscathed. Then, Leebeebee admits the childbirth thing was a lie before also confessing to orchestrating the emergency beacon explosion. She states that Mensah and SecUnit won't come to the rescue because they're dead. Thankfully, the gang has little time to mourn before Murderbot barges into the habitat, wrist raised. Leebeebee moves behind Gurathin and puts her arm around his neck. She presses the gun against Gurathin's temple. Before she can finish her threat, though, SecUnit explodes her head. Her body hits the floor with a thud. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Feelings Naturally, the group all have different reactions to Murderbot killing Leebeebee. Ratthi vomits. Pin-Lee bursts into uninhibited laughter. Bharadwaj is in shock. SecUnit insists they all get in the hopper before Leebeebee's employer arrives. Mensah agrees with it. RELATED: Read our Murderbot recaps However, before they depart, Murderbot needs to repair itself. We see more footage from Sanctuary Moon as our bot explains that feelings are, well, strange. The humans undoubtedly thought that it was close to becoming like them. Outside, Arada comforts Bharadwaj after the latter bursts into tears. Can they trust SecUnit after this? Do they see it as a human-killing machine? As for Murderbot, it might have enjoyed exploding Leebeebee's head a little too much. Murderbot drops new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+.
