Not Jasprit Bumrah, Sanjay Manjrekar picks THIS 33-year-old as player India need badly in second Test vs England

Jasprit Bumrah. New Delhi: India lost the first test of the five matches series against England by five wickets and their bowling line looked like a blunt tool throughout the match. But Jasprit Bumrah was again on top of the world, bowling as well as he can and claiming five first-innings wickets. The new Test captain, Shubman Gill, too made an impression with a spectacular 147 to become the youngest Indian after Virat Kohli to record a century on his debut as a captain of the Test team. Irrespective of these personal feats, ex-Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar reckons that it might be KL Rahul at this moment that India needs the most. KL Rahul was India's highest scorer in the second innings of the first Test match by making a good 137. Sanjay Manjrekar in his interview with ESPN Cricinfo stated that Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder and has to continue his good form through the series. Manjrekar had also said that he had hopes that Rishabh Pant might have a good run throughout the rest of the games. 'Rishabh Pant enjoys Test matches. He has not got enough runs. So he is hungry. I see Pant carrying his form, but there is another senior batter in the team, who now has got no choice but to carry his form right through the series. Indian cricket needs him badly, and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer,' Manjrekar said. Exceptional talent in Test cricket India has Rishabh Pant, who crackled during the first Test with a 134 and a 118 and became the first-ever wicketkeeper-batter to score centuries on both innings of a Test match. Hail his performance, Sanjay Manjrekar commented that scoring two hundreds in 48 hours is a feature of a very great talent. 'Any batter who gets two hundreds in a Test match, it takes a lot out of you mentally, not so much physically, getting a hundred in the first innings, and 48 hours later, you have the same kind of reserve to get another hundred. So that is a hallmark of an exceptional player,' he added

'Hate To Bring Kohli As Comparison But...': Manjrekar Points Out Gill's Flaws

Last Updated: Sanjay Manjrekar has criticised Shubman Gill's defensive captaincy as India lost to England. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said that although the ball was not doing a lot, Shubman Gill and his team pre-empted the conditions and set up a very defensive field against England, which made it easier for the hosts to attack and keep scoring runs. England defeated India by five wickets in the series opener as they chased down the huge score of 371 on Day 5 of the game. As a result, Gill became the sixth Indian Test skipper to start his leadership tenure with a defeat. 'Overcast conditions, I know the ball wasn't doing too much, but they pre-empted the English approach and had a far too defensive field. I hate to bring Virat Kohli as a comparison because it's unfair on the young man, but you can just imagine Virat Kohli in that situation," Manjrekar said while speaking on Star Sports. 'Whether they would have got wickets or not, Kohli would have shown the opposition that he's trying to get them out. Gill is not that kind of personality, nor that kind of captain," Manjrekar added. On the personal front, Gill began his leadership tenure silencing his critics with a brilliant knock of 147 in the first innings and became just the fifth India skipper to score a hundred on captaincy debut. India have never won a Test at Edgbaston, having lost seven out of eight games played. India lost the opening Test despite five of their batters scoring hundreds, as England chased down 371 in the fourth innings to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Gill scored 147 in India's first innings total of 471 and 8 in the second essay. India collapsed from 430/3 in the first innings to 471, losing seven wickets for 41 runs and in the second, they crumbled to 364 all-out from 333/ 4, losing six wickets for 31 runs. 'It was a brilliant Test. We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough, but proud of the team and overall a good effort. Yesterday, we were thinking around 430 odd and declared, but we lost six wickets for 25 runs (31)," Gill said while speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony. Sanjay Manjrekar Criticises Ravindra Jadeja After India's Loss To England: "Didn't Use The..."

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has come out in support of India's seamers following team's five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Leeds but did not hold back when it came to assessing Ravindra Jadeja's performance. While India's pacers toiled without much assistance from the surface, Manjrekar felt Jadeja missed a real opportunity to make a bigger impact, especially on the Day 5 pitch that could have offered help through the rough. "It's not fair to be overly critical of younger players like Prasidh Krishna -- there are obvious areas for improvement," Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said on the show 'Match Centre Live' in JioHotstar. "I am going to be critical of Ravindra Jadeja. This was a final-day pitch with rough patches for him to exploit. And while there were a couple of chances, we have to expect more from someone of his experience," he added. Jadeja, India's lead spinner in the absence of Ravichandran Ashwin, struggled to create pressure through long spells and failed to extract consistent turn despite visible rough outside the left-hander's off stump. He ended the match with just one wicket, that of England captain Ben Stokes, finishing with figures of 1/104 in 24 overs in the second innings. He remained wicketless in the first innings. "These weren't typical English conditions where the pitch offers nothing," Manjrekar continued. "I felt he didn't use the rough nearly enough -- especially against Ben Duckett. Against Ben Stokes, yes, he did make an effort. But it was only much later in Duckett's innings that Jadeja started using the rough properly. When you're dealing with experienced bowlers and seasoned batters, you expect a higher level of tactical awareness. Somewhere, I felt Jadeja was disappointing," he said. "The seamers had no help from the surface -- but Jadeja at least had something in the pitch working in his favour," he added. The left-arm spinner did produce a few quality deliveries. The final day saw England produce a successful run chase. Led by Ben Duckett's impressive 149 and key contributions from Zak Crawley, Joe Root and Jamie Smith, the hosts reached the target in 82 overs, finishing at 373/5 to clinch a five-wicket win. India now trail 0-1 in the five-match Test series. With the series wide open and the next Test offering a different surface and conditions, the spotlight will remain on Jadeja to lift his game.

Promising Sai Sudharsan will not have leg stump weakness for long: Sanjay Manjrekar

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised youngster Sai Sudharsan despite an ordinary Test debut in Leeds. Sudharsan was trapped twice on the leg side by the England fast bowlers in the opening Test scored 0 and 30 in either innings of the game, despite batting on a good batting track at the venue. However, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised the batter and said that he has a very high ceiling and would get over his technical issues in no vs IND, 1st Test Day 4: Updates Manjrekar's praise came amidst his overall praise of the young Indian batting line-up, which has held its own against Ben Stokes' team. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar said that India should aim for a 370–375 run target against the English side and then unleash Bumrah on the final day of the Test match."This young batting line-up just amazes me. I am already a very happy Indian cricket supporter with the way these people have played the first Test. I am imagining a scenario where India bat well again in the second innings and England are set a target of 370–375 runs. If England try hard to get there, and with the kind of bowling issues that India have, England will try to get there. And then you can throw in Bumrah, and then you can think that India are favourites to win. So, all possibilities open," Sanjay Manjrekar said at the start of Day Sudharsan looked compact. He has a very old-fashioned technique. In a proper Test match, he has no trigger movement, very much like the 70s and 80s. Unfortunate that he got out on the leg side twice. But I do not think that it will be a weakness that you have to worry about for a long time," he added on Sai started Day 4 at 90/2 with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease. While Shubman chopped on Brydon Carse's rising delivery on the off stump, KL played superbly to survive a terrific spell from Carse and Chris Reel
