Raut claims Sena min seen with ‘cash bag' in video; it's just clothes, says Shirsat

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut Friday posted a video on X purportedly showing social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat of Shiv Sena sitting in a room with a partially opened bag containing what look like bundles of currency notes. Raut said Union home minister Amit Shah should take note. Shirsat rubbished the claim, report Chittaranjan Tembhekar & Chaitanya Marpakwar. The allegation came a day after it emerged that Shirsat had received a notice from the income tax department seeking an explanation for increase in his financial worth between the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections from Rs 3.3 crore to Rs 35 crore. Last month, Shirsat and his son withdrew from a hotel deal after an opposition outcry. Shirsat said, "The house seen in the video is my home. It shows I am sitting (clad in a vest) in my bedroom. My pet dog and a bag are also seen. This means I have just returned from travel and removed my clothes. If I have to keep such a big bag of money, is there a dearth of cupboards?" Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said sarcastically that Mahayuti legislators were showing disregard for the rule framed by the Modi govt that a person should not handle cash beyond Rs 2 lakh on a given day. Raut and Thackeray expressed their apprehensions about whether action would be taken against Shirsat and Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad (who assaulted MLA hostel canteen staffers) when their videos, they said, were "good enough to prove their crime. " Aaditya said, "Many Sanjays are in the news these days. One Sanjay was seen fighting in the canteen wearing shorts and a vest. Another Sanjay was seen sitting in shorts and a vest with a bag full of money. It seems that all the MLAs are advertising wearing vests. That is why (Dy CM Eknath) Shinde must have visited Delhi on Guru Purnima to touch the feet of his guru." Aaditya further alleged, "We saw one of the 50 'khoke' (cash bags) that he took to join the Shinde-led Sena… He himself is a minister, there were allegations against him that there was an attempt to grab a hotel, an attempt to grab land, and CM Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry. But the question is, will Shinde, the boss of these MLAs, take action against them?" Shirsat said, "Such claims won't affect my (political) career." Shirsat had told the media on Thursday that he had sought more time to reply to the I-T department's notice asking for an explanation for the increase in his financial worth. However, he had to backtrack on his remark that Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde had also received a similar notice and later clarified that he had no knowledge of Shrikant Shinde receiving any I-T notice. Shirsat, an MLA from Sambhajinagar West, had declared Rs 44.78 crore in cash and liabilities of Rs 26.45 crore in loans from multiple banks in his election affidavit in Oct 2024. His declared holdings included agricultural land valued at Rs 4.37 crore and flats in Mumbai and Sambhajinagar collectively worth Rs 4.7 crore. Shirsat has been the target of AIMIM's former Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel and leader of opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve over the assets issue.

Bag had clothes, not money, says Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat after video goes viral

A day after the news of IT notice against Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat, a fresh controversy erupted about him. A video of Mr. Shirsat sitting in a room along with a partially opened bag containing what look like bundles of notes went viral on Friday (July 11, 2025). The Shiv Sena Minister disputed the claim that it was a money bag and insisted that it contained only clothes. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who posted the video on X, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah should take note. 'I feel pity for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis! How many more times will he just sit and watch his reputation being torn to shreds? Helplessness has another name: Fadnavis!' Mr. Raut posted on X. 'I had travelled and had reached home. The bag had clothes, and not money,' Mr. Shirsat said. Talking to reporters in Mumbai, Mr. Shirsat said, 'The house seen in the video is my home. It shows I am sitting (clad in a Banyan) in my bedroom. My pet dog and a bag are also seen. This means that I have just returned from travel and removed my clothes. If I have to keep such a big bag of money, is there a dearth of cupboards? ' 'But they see (currency) notes even in a cloth bag,' Mr. Shirsat said. 'Had there been money, I would have kept it in the cupboard,' he said. Asked if there were only clothes in the bag, the Minister said, 'Of course. There were clothes in it.' 'Such claims won't affect my (political) career,' he added. The video surfaced a day after reports emerged of Mr. Shirsat facing scrutiny from the Income Tax Department regarding a significant increase in his declared assets, which surged from ₹3.3 crore in 2019 to ₹35 crore in 2024. The IT department has requested an explanation for this significant increase in his financial worth between the 2019 and 2024 Assembly elections. Mr. Shirsat told the media on Thursday (July 10, 2025) that he has sought more time to reply to the notice. (With PTI inputs)

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Shirsat Seen With Suspicious Bag Day After Tax Notice

New Delhi: Maharashtra's Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat is at the center of a political storm after a video surfaced online allegedly showing him smoking in a private room with a bag suspected to be full of cash nearby. The footage emerged just a day after he acknowledged receiving an income tax notice related to a sharp spike in his declared assets between the 2019 and 2024 Assembly elections. The clip was posted on social media by Sanjay Raut, a senior leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, who took a swipe at the ruling alliance. In a scathing post, Raut wrote, "I feel pity for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis! How many more times will he just sit and watch his reputation being torn to shreds? Helplessness has another name - Fadnavis!" Shirsat, a legislator from Aurangabad (West) aligned with the Shiv Sena group led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, defended himself, claiming the bag seen in the video merely contained clothes and not money, as alleged by Raut. He also confirmed that he had been served a notice by the Income Tax Department seeking clarification about the growth in his assets. "Some people had filed a complaint against me with the income tax department, based on which I was issued a notice. I was supposed to respond to it on Wednesday, but I requested more time. I will give a proper response. Nothing wrong has been done," Shirsat stated. Shirsat added, "This is a well-thought-out conspiracy. I am sitting comfortably in my house, and my dog is sitting as well. Someone has recorded a video of this, which suggests they were spying on us... We are such people that anyone who visits our home eats food and drinks tea. It is our responsibility to supervise the workers. There might be an agent among them, but we do not worry about it, nor have we ever seen anything suspicious... Have you seen someone living in the house openly sitting beside money? This is unusual. But we will respond to this conspiracy." #WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: On a purported viral video showing him sitting beside a bag filled with cash, Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat says, "This is a well-thought-out conspiracy. I am sitting comfortably in my house, and my dog is sitting as well. Someone has recorded… — ANI (@ANI) July 11, 2025 Aaditya Thackeray, another prominent leader from the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT), joined the chorus of criticism, calling for swift action from both the tax authorities and Chief Minister Fadnavis. "Today, it's Sanjay Sirsat, sitting in his vest and underwear. We talk about 'Khokhe' (boxes of cash), '50 Khokhe, Ekdum Okay', one is seen in the video. All these antics happening in just vests and undergarments, bags full of cash beside him, where did all this money come from? Who gave it? Can anyone just roam around carrying such wads of notes? And regarding the Income Tax notice that came the day before, will the IT department take any action? Will any action be taken on the orders of the Chief Minister or not? These are important questions that need answers," said Thackeray. Initially, Shirsat also claimed that Shrikant Shinde, Lok Sabha MP and son of Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, had received a similar income tax notice. However, he later walked back the comment. "Someone asked me a leading question... My response was presented as if I were confirming a notice to Shrikant Shinde. I want to clarify that I have no information about that," he said. In a separate development earlier this week, another video of Shirsat speaking at a public event in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar sparked fresh controversy. In it, the minister jokingly remarked, "Now, black money is not going to be useful. I am speaking for myself." He added that he had already reached out to his chartered accountant and was preparing a detailed response to the tax notice. "It is easy to earn money, but using it has become difficult," he added, drawing laughter from the audience. Shirsat later attempted to minimize the significance of the video, saying his remarks were intended humorously and were not an admission of any wrongdoing.

Minister Shirsat gets I-T notice over 10x rise in wealth from 2019 to '24

Mumbai/Pune: State social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat (Shiv Sena) has received a notice from the income tax department seeking an explanation for the increase in his financial worth between the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections, report Chittaranjan Tembhekar, Chaitanya Marpakwar & Prasad Joshi. Documents submitted to the EC showed the Sambhajinagar West MLA's movable and immovable assets rose tenfold between the two polls — from Rs 3.3 crore in 2019 to Rs 35 crore in 2024, which included Rs 44.8 lakh in cash and liabilities of Rs 26.5 crore in bank loans. Holdings in 2024 included agricultural land valued at Rs 4.4 crore and flats in Mumbai and Sambhajinagar worth Rs 4.7cr. The income tax department has sought an explanation from state minister Sanjay Shirsat over the rise in his wealth from Rs 3.3 crore to Rs 35 crore between the 2019 and 2024 polls. Shirsat told mediapersons on Thursday there was nothing much to read into it and he has sought more time to reply to the notice. "Whether it is the I-T or any other department, they are doing their duty and there is nothing wrong in it. The I-T department sought an explanation for the increase in my wealth," he said. Shirsat, whose 2024 poll affidavit mentions his profession as social worker, farmer, and building and construction contractor, has been the target of AIMIM leader and former Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel and leader of opposition in the council Ambadas Danve for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets. "Some people complained against me to the I-T department. In response, it sent me a notice, returnable on July 9. However, I sought more time," he said, adding, "These notices do not mean there are deliberate attempts to exert pressure on our party. Govt agencies have the right to probe everything. I have furnished all necessary details in my election affidavit while fighting the last assembly polls." A video of Shirsat addressing an event of chartered accountants a couple of days ago has gone viral. In the clip, he says earning money has become easier, but spending it difficult. Shirsat and his son have previously faced allegations in the legislative council regarding a hotel deal. According to Shirsat's own declarations, his wife possesses real estate assets valued at Rs 19.7 crore, including flats and land. He owns gold jewellery, LIC policies and bank deposits totalling over Rs 13.4 crore and a car worth Rs 18 lakh.
