Wiser, sharper and hungrier: Shafali Verma's next chapter as India player set to begin in England
New Delhi: In September 2019, a teenager with a jaw-dropping bat swing and a fearless attitude lit up Indian cricket. Shafali Verma, then just 15, exploded onto the international scene with a power game that left many opposition bowlers rattled. But in sports, evolution is inevitable, and in Shafali's case, it became essential. As India kick off its five-match T20I series against England in Nottingham, Shafali, now 21, returns to the national fold with the same aggression, but now layered with wisdom, sharpness in the game and a desire to get bigger scores at the international level. Dropped from the national set-up for almost eight months after last year's T20 World Cup and lean scores in subsequent ODI series against New Zealand, Shafali's tough times deepened as her father Sanjeev suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital. With the domestic season looming and Sanjeev pushing her through practice despite his own recovery needs, Shafali rigorously trained, improving fitness and honing her skills to now be back in national reckoning. The results have been there to see: Shafali was the leading run-scorer in the 2024/25 Senior Women's One-Day Trophy via 527 runs coming at an average of 75.29 and strike rate of 152.31. The Senior Women's One-Day Challenger Trophy was the next tournament to bring up big runs - 414 runs, at an average of 82.8 and strike rate of 145.26. A steady showing for Delhi Capitals in the 2025 Women's Premier League (WPL) - Shafali amassed 304 runs from nine innings with a strike rate of 152.76 – to be the side's leading run-getter. All of this was enough for Shafali to get back into the Indian team, albeit for the T20I tour. 'Everyone here is feeling good with her return to the Indian team and hopefully, she will do well. Our HCA camps, trainers, coaches - all of us had a role to play. Whenever she came to the academy, she spent time working on her game with us.' 'As they say in Bollywood terms, the superb first show on a film's release day, her entry in the Indian team was very much in that way. But as compared to the explosion she made suddenly in 2019, she is now back in the team with maturity and is keen on taking full responsibility in terms of how a senior player should play, and this is kind of hope everyone has from her now,' said Ashwani Kumar, Shafali's coach at the Shri Ram Narain Cricket Club in Rohtak, to IANS. Expanding on Shafali's development, Ashwani, a former Ranji Trophy player, highlighted her focus on shot selection. 'It happens many times that early shot selection wouldn't let her carry forward in the innings. But if you are against good bowling which is more aggressive all of a sudden, then how would you tackle that mentally - we chatted around these things and she took it very seriously.' Though Shafali continued to play her swashbuckling big hits, there was a visible restraint - an effort to value her wicket and bat deeper into the innings. According to Milap Mewada, fielding coach at Delhi Capitals in WPL 2025, this is precisely the next step in her evolution as an opening batter. 'No doubt in T20, you look to hit almost every ball and if you play 50 T20 games, there are 2-3 opportunities where you will bat for at least 20 overs as an opener. So I would love to see if she plays 65 balls at least in these T20 games. I want to see her play long first, and put a tag on her wicket, and don't give her wicket easily.' 'When a player gets dropped once or twice, then they realise the value of the India comeback. So I feel whatever happened was good, and I always believe that she will take learnings of last few months very far in her career. So the India T20I comeback has been very timely.' 'I feel her return to Indian team has happened at the right time because in WPL, she was scoring high. No doubt, 2-3 times she got out on 40s, but if she understands how to pass through that event, where she would often lost her wicket, then she can go for another 40-50 runs,' Mewada told IANS. Another important factor Mewada, who came off a stint with Afghanistan senior and emerging teams as their batting coach, noticed about Shafali was her putting in hard yards to counter her issues against short balls. 'While at DC, she was working on facing short balls and the ones going above abdomen height, as facing them was a little difficult for her previously.' 'But at the same time, she didn't get out that much of it. In T20s, even the bowler has limited overs and balls to bowl. So she was trying to elevate herself and optimise this situation - so that was a good sign.' That ability to play a longer innings - along with the importance of strike rotation to build her innings - could be Shafali's ticket to India's ODI team, especially in a World Cup year. Though Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol are in India's top order alongside Smriti Mandhana, Ashwani agrees the T20I series against England could shape Shafali's path for coming back into ODIs. 'The performances in this series hold huge importance in terms of her coming back to the ODI team. When people are tasked with making a comeback to the national team, a lot of them will say that something wrong happened with them due to this or that. But she understood it well why she got dropped and credit goes to her.' 'Here, the biggest principle of coaching is when a child knows what mistake she is making, then she has a chance to improve. If the children or anyone else does not know what mistake was made or is not ready to accept it, then the scope of improvement and comeback ends there,' says Ashwani. Mewada too expressed a similar sentiment. 'For how long did all the in-form openers in IPL 2025 lasted in their innings? They played nearly till the end or few lasted till the 20th over. If Shafali plays 15 or 16 overs in T20Is, she can even score a hundred.' 'She can capitalise on the powerplay and then play for long, which in turn will get her a chance to play in ODIs. I believe if she gets a start, then she should take it forward. When at DC, I would see her batting and thank God for making a very good player like her,' he added. While Shafali's batting is outstanding, Mewada notes that her fitness and fielding remain areas of further improvement. 'Suppose if I want to improve my fitness, I have to sweat out. If someone else sweats out, I cannot improve my fitness, and so I will have to work hard for that.' 'In the next 2-3 years, if her fitness improves, then her fielding will improve. For that, she has to conceive a pro-level thought process. But at the same time, she has a very good pair of safe hands. No matter how fast a batter hits a shot, she catches it easily because she is not afraid of catching it. But the only thing is her movement part which depends on her fitness.' 'Like going from point A to point B, how much time does she take to go? So that time if she can minimise, through improved fitness and speed, she will be the number one fielder. Then her running between wickets will be good and speed of reaching the ball will increase in fielding.' 'She can be a wonderful fielder because her pair of hands are safe. But she has to push herself for a lot of fitness training and have that mentality of 'I should be the fittest in the Indian team'. Shafali is like a jet engine who needs jet fuel to run her plane – and then only she can soar higher in all aspects of the game,' he elaborated. Shafali's strong performances in the T20I series against England could lead to her return to the Indian ODI team, a decision the Neetu David-led selection committee will then have to make before the World Cup takes centrestage. It's because no other female cricketer in India can rival Shafali's extraordinary abilities with the bat. The fireworks with the bat are still there - but now, there's a spark of something steadier, as England might witness the start of a new and mature chapter of Shafali's career as an Indian cricketer.

Victoria records highest number of arrests in 172 years as crime rate soars
627,268 criminal offences were recorded in Victoria in the 12 months to the end of March 2025 — an increase of 91,692 offences compared to the previous year. Victoria Police says officers have removed an average of 44 blades from the hands of offenders every day this year. Youth crime remains at its highest level since electronic records began in 1993. "I woke up shocked when I received a call from Victoria Police in the middle of the night telling me that my cars had been stolen and they were coming to my house," recalls Sanjeev, a resident of Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs. Sanjeev, an Indian-origin man, says the break-in—which occurred while his wife and two children were asleep—left his children traumatised. Following the incident, the family eventually sold their home. However, this is not an isolated case. Aggravated residential burglaries are 'at a historic high' in Victoria, according to the latest data revealed by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA). Overall, crimes in Victoria have increased by 17.1 per cent in the past 12 months up to March 2025, the data has revealed. One of the fastest-growing offence types was motor vehicle theft, with 31,551 offences recorded—an increase of 47.1 per cent compared to the previous year. While the CSA does not report specific data on knife-related crimes, Victoria Police says knife crime remains "an ongoing concern". 'Knife crime is another area of intense focus for Victoria Police, with officers removing an average of 44 blades from the hands of criminals every day this year," Acting Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations David Clayton said in an official statement . Child crime—defined as offences committed by individuals aged 10 to 17—remains at its highest level since electronic records began. The comedy duo can't wait to celebrate Scotland's unsung heroes at our People's oscars. With just one day to go until the Pride of Scotland Awards, hosts Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohli are getting ready to "gie it laldy" for the nation's unsung heroes. The comedy duo are taking the helm again at our People's Oscars and can't wait to give our inspirational 2025 winners a night they will remember forever. Despite being two of the biggest names in Scottish showbiz both admit when it comes to Pride's incredible unsung heroes, they are the ones who are left starstruck. Sanjeev, who is one of the standout stars of new Netflix hit Department Q, said: 'The Pride of Scotland Awards are massive and the number of big names who turn out to celebrate our nation's most inspiring people is phenomenal. 'But what the unsung heroes don't realise is that they are the ones who leave the celebrities starstruck because their selfless achievements are far greater. 'As a judge I already know their jaw-dropping stories of bravery and compassion so when you meet them in real life you can't help but be affected. 'They may have eyes like saucers when they see all the stars on the red carpet tomorrow night but mine will be the size of dinner plates when the winners join me and Elaine on stage.' The Still Game star added: 'This will be my third year as host and it's the most fantastic and heart-warming and uplifting event in my calendar. 'I feel we owe it to all the winners to give them as good a night as possible - it's the least we can do after what they do so selflessly for others." Sanjeev, who starred in BBC hit comedy Dinosaur, admitted he has lost count of all the stand-out moments over the years. He said: 'Last year it was Wilson the miniature Shetland pony in a kilt that really got me. He was wearing two wee pairs of shoes from Build-A-Bear. I truly never thought I would see a pony wearing Converse. 'His adorable outfit aside - the work Wilson and his owners Elaine and John Sangster do at Therapy Ponies Scotland is incredible. 'Elaine said their wee horses sense when someone needs a boost. I think we should send a whole herd of horses into war zones as everyone would instantly drop their weapons.' The former River City actor added: 'Another of the 2024 winners who struck a chord with me was John Aitchison, the firefighter who has helped set up the first fire service on Mount Everest. 'The world is getting more insular and intolerant. Just look at Trump deporting anyone who isn't American and then you have Scots guys like John going around the world saying humans are humans and it doesn't matter about the colour of your skin or DNA. That really speaks to me as the son of an immigrant.' From acts of kindness and selfless bravery to raising millions for charity the Daily Record Pride of Scotland Awards with P&O Cruises will salute the nation's unsung heroes. A host of stars from the worlds of TV, film, music, sport and politics will descend on The Hilton Glasgow tomorrow night to honour the winners. Rob C Nesbitt legend Elaine agrees with Sanjeev about it being one of the most uplifting nights of the year and an antidote to what is going on in the world right now. The gran-of-two, who was given the Freedom of Glasgow earlier this year, said: 'Pride of Scotland brings the light in dark times. 'There are so many horrific and heartbreaking events happening in the world just now from the situation in the Middle East to the terrible aeroplane crash in India. 'These awards are a reminder to everyone that there is still so much good in the world with folk looking out for their neighbours and going above and beyond to help others in their communities. 'I did a Sunday Mail column for many years and I used to include an 'Angel of the Week' section to highlight the ordinary Scots who are doing extraordinary things. 'The room tomorrow night will be full to the rafters with 'angels' who are quietly making a massive difference to the world which gladdens my soul and lifts my heart.' She added: 'This is my fifth Pride and like Sanjeev said there have been so many magical moments but one of my all time favourites was in 2023 when the hard man of football Graeme Souness started crying on stage while talking about his hero – Isla Grist. "The teenager has epidermolysis bullosa – a rare and painful skin disorder which causes her skin to burn and blister at the slightest touch. She inspired the football legend to swim the channel and raise £4.5million for drug trials – just incredible. 'Another standout came in 2022 when I spotted Lulu in the audience and started belting out the first few notes of Shout as a gag. Next thing I knew she was on stage singing her hit and getting everyone to join in - to this day I believe she only did it to stop me singing. 'Last year seeing wee Wilson trotting along the red carpet in his kilt will be something I will never forget - they really are awards like no other.' Elaine, who became a gran for the second time last year, admitted the Children of Courage get her every year and paid tribute to 2022 winner Zac Gunn who passed away a few weeks ago. She said: 'I have to gird my loins every year to stop myself from greetin.' The kids just melt my heart especially wee Zac who passed away this month just weeks after having a long-awaited lung transplant. I will never forget his huge grin when Paw Patrol came on stage and presented him with his award. 'That wee child fought so hard to live and his death is heartbreaking. My love goes out to his dad Gordon, mum Ashley and brother Jacob.' Dad-of-three Sanjeev added: 'As a daddy the kids' stories have me in bits every time. Picking the winners from a shortlist is so tough and I feel so guilty - it's like someone telling me I have to pick a favourite child from my own three. 'It's truly astonishing what the Children and Teenagers of Courage bring to this world - such huge altruism from such little people. 'Maybe if adults channelled their less jaded and cynical attitude to life the world would be a better place. Most of these kids are suffering yet they still strive to support and raise funds for others. They are truly remarkable.' We launched our search for our local heroes of 2025 back in January and were inundated with thousands of nominations from across the nation. Categories include The Emergency Services Award, Teenager of Courage, Young Fundraiser, Outstanding Bravery, The King's Trust Young Achiever, Special Recognition and The P&O Cruises Inspiration Award. One of the biggest names attending tomorrow night's glittering ceremony is Succession legend Brian Cox, who is getting ready to take the stage at the Dundee Rep in new play Make It Happen about the Bank of Scotland's role in the 2008 financial crash. Other stars who will be honouring the winners include Sheli McCoy aka Sabre, singer Susan Boyle, Star Wars actor Denis Lawson, singers Nathan Evans, Calum Bowie and Cammy Barnes and Strictly's JJ Chalmers and Dr Punam Krishan. Love Island's Paige Turley and Saint Phnx's Stevie Jukes will be going live from the red carpet and presenter Laura Anderson will be manning the Pride of Scotland bar. Workwise, Sanjeev Seth and Lataa Saberwal were seen playing the role of Hina Khan's character Akshara in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. Lataa played Rajshri Goyel Maheshwari, whereas Sanjeev played Vishambharnath. They were part of this daily soap since its inception.
