2 killed as truck goes on rampage, drags car for 1.5 km in Sitapur

Lucknow: A speeding truck collided with a car on National Highway-30 in Sitapur's Maholi area late Thursday, killing two people and injuring three others. The collision was so intense that the car got wedged under the truck's front bumper and was dragged for 1.5 km. According to inspector Dilip Kumar Chaubey, the car — carrying five people — was heading from Maholi bypass towards Mailani when it was hit by a truck on the way to Shahjahanpur from Sitapur. He said the truck dragged the car for 1.5 km, also striking a 42-year-old cyclist Saroj from Jalalpur village and severely injuring him before finally stopping at the Badagaon overbridge. According to reports, the truck driver continued driving despite attempts by passing motorists in a Thar SUV to stop him, until the badly damaged car got wedged in the truck's wheels. The driver then tried to flee but was caught by the police. The victims were identified as Sunil Mishra (45), a school teacher from Vikas Nagar in Lucknow; Sanjeev Gupta (50), a resident of Awasthi Tola; Ram Autar Singh (50) from Mahsuniya Ganj; and Vipul Mishra alias Lalu (38), also of Awasthi Tola in Sitapur. The injured were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Maholi, where doctors declared Sanjeev Gupta and Ram Autar Singh dead on arrival. The remaining three, including the cyclist, were referred to the district hospital in a critical condition. The accident cast a pall of gloom over Maholi town, especially among the local trader community, as two of the deceased were prominent businessmen. Both the truck and its driver are in police custody.

Australia begins formal sale process for Gupta's Whyalla Steelworks

SYDNEY, June 24 (Reuters) - The Australian government on Tuesday formally opened the sale process for commodity tycoon Sanjeev Gupta's Whyalla Steelworks, which it said has attracted strong interest from global steelmakers looking to expand into low-emission manufacturing. The steel plant in the state of South Australia was placed in administration in February, with its operating company owing tens of millions of dollars to creditors, and forced the state and federal government to come up with an A$1.9 billion ($1.23 billion) bailout package. "Selected prospective buyers have now been granted access to a secure data room - enabling initial due diligence and allowing parties to prepare non-binding indicative offers," Federal Industry Minister Tim Ayres said in a statement. "A range of prospective buyers have already expressed interest in acquiring and transforming the integrated operations." The independent sale process will be led by administrator KordaMentha and sale advisors 333 Capital, Ayres said. Gupta's family conglomerate, GFG Alliance, did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. In March, GFG said it remained the largest creditor in Whyalla Steelworks at A$536 million ($347 million). The privately held conglomerate has been refinancing its global businesses in steel, aluminium and energy since its backer, supply chain finance firm Greensill, filed for insolvency in March 2021. Another subsidiary, Liberty Steel East Europe, was put into administration late last year. ($1 = 1.5444 Australian dollars)

Unions mull over Liberty Steel as two electric arc furnaces in Rotherham stand 'idle' for nearly a year

Liberty Steel's two electric arc furnaces in Rotherham have now been 'idle' for nearly a year – as unions hold talks about its perilous position with billionaire owner Sanjeev Gupta. Liberty's subsidiary Specialty Steel UK faces a winding-up petition, and trade unionists want Gupta to step aside. Community Union leader Roy Rickhuss met Gupta yesterday. Specialty Steel UK (SSUK) employs 1,450 people in the North, Midlands and Scotland. Chris Williamson, union secretary at Rotherham, said: 'We feel like we're being wound down.' Liberty said it had covered wages, maintaining the sites and sustaining the business, costing £200million, adding: 'We're working on all viable solutions to ensure a long-term future for Specialty Steel.' Liberty's owner is being pursued by creditors, led by administrators for Greensill Capital, which collapsed in 2021 having lent Gupta's firms £3.6billion. If wound up on July 16, the Official Receiver would take control of SSUK and seek a buyer.
