Two arrested for Rs 67L land fraud
Berhampur: Two persons, including a 70-year-old woman, were arrested Friday for allegedly cheating a man of around Rs 67 lakh on the pretext of selling a piece of land in Nilakanthapur mouza in Berhampur tehsil by providing false documents.
The accused have been identified as Rita Dalai of Gandhi Nagar and Sanjeev Ratan (42) of Shastri Nagar. Two others allegedly involved in the case would be arrested soon, police sources said. The accused persons allegedly sold 0.042 decimal of land to Milan Kumar Sahu (42) of Padma Nagar in Dec last year.
Sahu complained about the land scam at Berhampur town police station on Friday. He alleged he bought the land and also received the record of rights (RoR) in Dec last year.
The total cost of the land was Rs 64,96,500. He paid an additional Rs 2 lakh for deed writing and registration. Out of this, he paid Rs 21.8 lakh in the account of the seller, Jalandhar Dalai, and the rest amount in cash in the presence of his wife, Rita Dalai, mediator Sanjeev, and another accused.
But later, he learnt that such a piece of land never existed. While a portion of such land was owned by another man, the other portion was a public road.
When the complainant asked about the cheating, they avoided him and threatened to kill him if he demanded his money.
"During investigation, it was ascertained that all the accused, conspired and cheated the complainant to the tune of around Rs 67 lakh," said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M. He said police have seized several documents, including an e-stamp slip of a non-judicial certificate, sale deeds, RoR fee receipts, trace map, e-registration slip, etc. Police said Rita Dalai was earlier arrested by police in a land fraud case and she is now out on bail.
