Rain-hit green gram crop shows signs of nutrient stress in Belagavi
Belagavi: Due to heavy rains and increased moisture, the green gram crop is facing nutrient deficiency in Belagavi district. To date, green gram has been sown in more than 32,000 hectares out of the total 41,000 hectares of land meant for the crop in the district. Farmers are concerned as the leaves of the crop are turning yellow in many places. Agriculture department sources said early sowing of the crop this year is one of the reasons for this effect. According to agricultural officials, this time, the sown crop is suffering from increased moisture. Farmers are worried about leaves turning yellow and preserving the crop. Green gram was sown in a total of 41,066 hectares in the entire district. The highest area of green gram sowing in the district is in Ramdurg taluk, with the crop being grown in 19,610 hectares. There are 18,181 hectares of green gram crop area in Savadatti, 1,936 hectares in Yaragatti, and 260 hectares in Hukkeri taluk. The green gram crop has already sprouted in more than half the area, while heavy rainfall has hindered sowing in the rest. If the crop is less than 20 days old, 2 grams of 19:19:19 fertiliser and 2 grams of 13:0:45 fertiliser should be mixed in 1 litre of water and sprayed on the leaves. In addition, 1 gram of Thiamethoxam insecticide and 1 gram of Carbon Dyzim or (1 gram Carbendazim + Mancozeb) compound fungicide should be sprayed separately to manage the sap-sucking grey disease. The steps recommended by the officials can be followed, but the crop protection methods that farmers have been following through years of experience are the most effective. The initiative aims to establish such shops (angadi) within various gram panchayat limits. On a pilot basis, the Shirva and Katapadi gram panchayats in Kaup taluk were identified as models. Shops were constructed in these two panchayats under the name 'Akka Sanjeevini Angadi' with the aim of introducing products made by the Sanjeevini self-help groups to the public. Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty recently inaugurated the newly built shops in Shirva and Katapadi. Speaking on the occasion, he said that women today are not limited to household duties, but are stepping out as entrepreneurs. With women now representing all fields, society is gradually transitioning from being male-dominated to female-led. Women are emerging as community leaders, not just household heads, through the Sanjeevini initiative. Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP tells officials to execute drinking water projects on priority basis
Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary on Tuesday, May 13, directed officials concerned to execute Rashtriya Jal Jeevan Mission (RJJM) project to provide drinking water in rural areas scientifically and on priority basis. Chairing the District Development Coordination and Monitoring (Disha) Committee meeting at Rajatadri, the district office complex in Manipal, Mr. Poojary asked forest department officials to positively respond whenever there was a requisition to lay pipeline through forest areas for the Jal Jeevan Mission. Even other drinking water projects should be undertaken on priority basis, the MP said. Asking Taluk Panchayat executive officers to monitor the work and resolve issues if any, Mr. Poojary said officials concerned would be held responsible if substandard works were found to have been executed. He said officials concerned should properly implement schemes and programmes brought out by the central government for the benefit of the general public. Mr. Poojary told officials to give special attention to Koraga tribes people living in over 182 settlements on forest fringes. He said housing projects for their benefit should be accelerated and if need be, help from private organisations should be availed of. Government schemes, including ration cards, Aadhaar cards, Ayushman cards etc., should be provided on their doorsteps, he said. The MP asked officials to speed up land acquisition for widening the Malpe-Hebri stretch of National Highway 169A to complete the project at the earliest. In all, the district has received ₹1,412 crore funds for NH projects this year, he said. He wanted speeding up of fishing harbour project at Hejmady and coastal berth projects at Hangarkatta, Gangolli and Maravanthe. Wherever necessary, foot bridges should be built under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Expressing concern over the deteriorated condition of concrete roads built under the Gram Sadak scheme within six to seven years as against 15-year life, Mr. Poojary asked officials to issue notices to contractors concerned and get the affected roads restored. On the occasion, the MP launched Appe Midi pickle produced by Sanjeevini women SHG of Amasebail and artificial ornaments produced by Sanjeevini women SHG of Hallihole. MLAs Yashpal Suvarna, Gurme Suresh Shetty, A Kiran Kumar Kodgi and Gururaj Gantihole, Deputy Commissioner K Vidyakumari, Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Bayal and others were present.

Handicraft by local shepherds to be on display at Belagavi airport in Karnataka
Handicraft items made by the shepherding women of Kadoli village will soon be available for sale at Belagavi airport in Sambra. This was decided after a team of senior officers visited the craft centre run by the Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Kadoli village. Rahul Shinde, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, said that the products include traditional products made by Kadoli women like handbags, shawls and caps, and innovative products like coasters, mouse pads and table top stationary. 'The airport stall is earning up to ₹2 lakh per month. Even if the local handicrafts persons manage to earn a 10% share in that amount, it would be a good beginning,' he said. He pointed out that the ZP will work with the local SHGs in training their women members in art, marketing, and finance management. 'We will also try to provide all the SHGs and artisans from the district an online platform to sell their produce under the Sanjeevini - National Rural Livelihood Mission - Karnataka,' he said. Mr. Shinde was among the senior officers who visited the Kadoli crafts centre, along with Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, and Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S. Guled. They interacted with the women, their trainers and chief mentor G. N. Gopikrishna. They saw various products being made from sheep wool, felt, and vegetable tanned leather. The officers appreciated the skills of Shivaraj Pujeri, a young man from Kadakol village, who has mastered the art of making felt shoes with and without soles. They urged him to produce shoes for men and women in different sizes. Mr. Roshan asked the women to scale up their production capacity, and expand their market. He assured all help in their endeavour. Dr. Guled urged the women to acquire additional skills to introduce finesse in their products, and to improve their overall quality and longevity. Neelakanth Mama, a local community leader, urged the officials to take long-term steps, like preserving community grazing land and vaccination of sheep, to protect the community. He urged the government to train local youth as para-veterinarians to help them identify animal epidemics, isolate affected herds, assist veterinarians in treating them, and vaccinating the rest. Mahesh Jadhav, co-founder of Mahesh Foundation, a Belagavi-based NGO, has worked with the ZP in setting up the airport stall. He said introducing local wool and felt products in the airport stall was a good idea as it would empower women artisans. The foundation's women volunteers are always on the lookout for various handicrafts and other local products to be showcased in the airport. The SHGs promoted by our NGO are now running a craft outlet in the foundation headquarters at Kanabargi. They are also running the Akka Cafe in the Belagavi ZP premises.
