Rural police use anti-drone guns to pull down illegally flown drones during palkhi processions

Pune: The Pune Rural police have deployed two anti-drone guns to take down unauthorised drones during the palkhi processions of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj. So far, police have shot down six drones operated by photographers without obtaining the necessary permissions. Confirming, superintendent of police, Pune Rural, Sandeep Singh Gill, said, "We will not tolerate this nuisance. Our teams are keeping an eye on the drones illegally flown during the processions. We are using anti-drone guns to pull them down." The police have registered six FIRs against the drone users and operators under Section 223 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of BNS with various police stations. "We have issued notices to these drone operators asking them to cooperate with the investigation," Gill said. The Pune city police have also filed four cases against drone operators and seized the devices. The Pune Rural police acquired two anti-drone guns last year after repeated complaints from villagers in areas like Ambegaon, Maval and Junnar about mysterious lights in the night sky, particularly near water bodies. Though police patrols found no evidence, they suspected unauthorised drone use might be causing the concern among locals. As per DGCA guidelines, drone operators or owners need to get prior permission from local police for video shoots. Centre has banned the use of drones near sensitive installations and other important offices.

Families, friends and dindis make way to Dive Ghat for Sunday pilgrimage

Pune: Thousands of Pune residents turned out in large numbers to witness the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi procession climb up Dive Ghat despite thecloudy weather. People from across the city joined the procession since dawn on Sunday, either walking or commuting directly to Dive Ghat to experience the annual pilgrimage. Even before the sun rose over Dive Ghat on Sunday, the hillside was already aglow with devotion. A stream of white-clad warkaris flowed past the ghat, singing abhangs and chanting 'Gyanba Tukaram' and 'Jai Hari Vitthal' in unison. Residents participated in the age-old tradition with family, friends, and neighbours, with many going beyond viewing it just as a religious obligation to become a communal act of joy, heritage, and devotion. "This is not just a religious event, it's an experience. We don't come every year, but this time, we all wanted to feel the energy. You don't get this kind of collective joy often," said Amruta Deshmukh, who booked a cab at 4am with her husband and two teenage sons. The Deshmukhs, like many others, braved intermittent showers and muddy roads, clutching umbrellas and plastic-wrapped tiffins. Some carried flasks of tea, while sometook alongpackets of pohe and bananas, all determined to witness the palanquin procession wind its way toward Pandharpur. Showers and long queues did not dampen the sense of unity and spiritual rhythm as chants and cymbals echoed through the hills. "This is my first palkhi experience," said Shilpa Nair, a 28-year-old software engineer from Kerala who recently shifted to Pune for work. She stood with her colleagues from an IT firm in Hinjewadi, all sporting rain jackets over traditional attire. "I did notknow what to expect, but when everyone started singing in sync, even strangers, it gave me goosebumps," said Nair. Their colleague, Abhijit Gokhale, who organised the office outing, said, "We wanted our teammates who aren't from Maharashtra to see and experience the wari. It's not about religion, it's about community —people sharing food, wiping benches for each other —this is who we are," said Gokhale. Children, seniors and newcomers walked side by side with seasoned warkaris, many forming their own dindis. Several housing societies turned the day into a mini-yatra of their own. Agroup from a housing society in Pimpri hired a bus for 30 residents. "We left at 4.30am and packed tea, snacks, umbrellas and a lot of excitement. My granddaughter and her friends saw many old reels of warkaris at Dive Ghat and were fascinated. They urged us to arrange a trip to witness it. On Sunday, when we reached, they sang 'Gyanba Tukaram' with the crowd," said Ashok Bhide, who coordinated the trip for his housing society residents.

CM orders scrapping of proposed abattoir in Pune's Alandi area

Jun 22, 2025 06:40 AM IST Putting a stop to controversies, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the cancellation of the proposed slaughterhouse reservation in Moshi near the pilgrimage town of Alandi. Residents, farmers, and warkaris (devotees) have welcomed the decision. Fadnavis made the announcement during his visit to Pune on Ashadhi Wari — the annual pilgrimage of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj's palkhi processions. (HT FILE) The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in its revised development plan had proposed a slaughterhouse on a four-acre plot in Moshi. Residents, warkaris and several religious organisations objected to the plan as the site is 4km from the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Temple in Alandi. Fadnavis made the announcement during his visit to Pune on Ashadhi Wari — the annual pilgrimage of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj's palkhi processions. After offering prayers and interacting with warkaris, the chief minister assured that no compromise will be made when it comes to the faith of devotees, especially in a spiritual and culturally significant region like Alandi. Two days prior to the announcement, Fadnavis had received formal representations from villagers, farmers, and BJP MLA Mahesh Landge during the inauguration of various development works in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Landge urged Fadnavis and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh to cancel the proposed reservation. 'The reservation for a slaughterhouse in such a holy area had triggered outrage among all sections of society,' said Landge. Fadnavis said, 'I have already given orders to drop the proposed slaughter house in this area from the plan.' The chief minister also reiterated the government's commitment to ban on cow slaughter.

Beed man arrested for snatching gold chains

Pune: The Dighi police arrested Siddharth Jadhav (24) of Shirur in Beed district for snatching gold chains from women and men, all warkaris, during the palkhi procession of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj around 9am on Friday on Pune-Alandi Road. The Dighi police recovered 10 gold chains worth Rs9 lakh from his possession. Police said that a 60-year-old warkari from Panvel raised an alarm after Jadhav snatched his gold chain. Police personnel on bandobast duty as well as people apprehended Jadhav on the spot. "After apprehending Jadhav, we found 10 gold chains with him. We took him to the police station and waited for complaints from the people. Within a few minutes, eight women and a man walked into the police station with their complaints stating that someone snatched their gold chains taking advantage of the crowded situation. Our team showed them the recovery, and all of them identified their jewellery," an officer from Dighi police said. "Jadhav came to Pune from Beed to snatch chains from the warkaris during the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. We suspect that he might have snatched more chains. We are questioning him on this," the officer said.
