SALTA, Argentina — Argentina sent Santiago Cordero and Francisco Gomez Kodela into retirement as winners after beating up Uruguay 52-17 on Saturday. Cordero and Gomez Kodela retire as Pumas winners after thumping Uruguay
SALTA, Argentina (AP) — Argentina sent Santiago Cordero and Francisco Gomez Kodela into retirement as winners after beating up Uruguay 52-17 on Saturday. Cordero, 12 years after his test debut, came off the bench and scored a try just moments after tighthead prop Gomez Kodela walked off in his last professional match at age 41, the oldest to ever play for the Pumas. They contributed to an eight-try victory to uphold the Pumas' unbeaten record against Uruguay — now 31-0 — and rebound from a humbling two-series loss at home to England. The Pumas started with a second-minute penalty try then bombed at least three more chances before 92-cap center Matias Moroni, the only backline starter with more than nine caps, broke a couple of tackles to score in injury time and break a 7-7 deadlock. Argentina reset at halftime and dominated the second half. Captain Julian Montoya plunged for a try off a ruck and that was Gomez Kodela's moment to leave to applause, then vice-captain Cordero touched down after seven minutes on the field. The move was begun by first-time starting flyhalf Nicolas Roger, who impressed. Winger Rodrigo Isgro had a try disallowed because lock Pedro Rubiolo was yellow-carded for shoulder-to-head contact in a ruck. It was upgraded on review to a 20-minute red card. Scrumhalf Santiago Alvarez's converted try narrowed the gap to seven near the hour mark, but the Pumas backs blew away Uruguay the rest of the way. Isgro scored, along with Justo Piccardo, Agustin Moyano, and Roger, who also slotted five of seven goalkicks. Argentina has the Rugby Championship next month, while Uruguay plays Paraguay next weekend to begin qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. ___ AP rugby:

Steve Borthwick reveals one key for England to beat Argentina this summer
England will need to show that they cope with Argentina' s transition game if they are to succeed away to Los Pumas, according to head coach Steve Borthwick. Borthwick and his team have flown out to South America for a two-Test series against the world's fifth-ranked side before travelling onto Washington DC to take on the USA. And any danger that they might take the task lightly was quickly extinguished on Friday night when Argentina ran in three tries in a historic 28-24 win over the British and Irish Lions in Dublin in their opening fixture. Even without some key players based in France, including future Harlequins second row Guido Petti and Toulouse duo Juan Cruz Mallia and Santiago Chocobares, Argentina were lethal off turnover ball. Former Exeter winger Santiago Cordero scored the winning try from a move that started in his own half, while Gloucester's Santiago Carreras was heavily involved in another long-range try finished by Tomas Albornoz. That ability to strike from nowhere did not go unnoticed by Borthwick, whose England side warmed up for their tour with a narrow home defeat to a France XV at Allianz Stadium. He said: 'Argentina are an enthusiastic, committed team who score fast in transition. They changed their strategy in a couple of areas against the Lions and ultimately, they got some opportunities and took them really well and took them quickly. 'It's a great challenge; it's one we are looking forward to and this group of players are really enthused by the chance to go to Argentina and go up against a really good team.' In the non-capped match against France, England bounced back from an early 12-0 deficit to get back in front 24-12, even after winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso was shown a 20-minute red card for a high tackle. That looked as though it would be enough to claim the win, but France came back strongly in the last 10 minutes with two tries to snatch the win. Despite that, Borthwick was pleased at the way his team – featuring five uncapped players in the matchday squad – were able to seize control of the encounter. He said: 'The response after a couple of scores against us, the response then and to get back control of the game. Tactically then, for about 55-60 minutes, I thought the team were very good and we looked very dangerous. 'If you look at the 22 entries and the number of penalties the opposition conceded close to their line, that told us there was a lot of good in our game. That was the pleasing aspect to it. 'While we are disappointed by the scoreboard at the end and the last 10 minutes, I think that's going to be positive in the development of this young group.'

Farrell adamant Lions 'won't suger-coat' Argentina loss
The Lions lost after their second-half fightback on Friday was cut short by Santiago Cordero's match-winning try for the Pumas in the 59th minute. Farrell's squad, comprised of leading players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, travel to Australia on Saturday before facing the Perth-based Western Force a week later in the first of several warm-up games ahead of a three-Test series with the Wallabies. Argentina, ranked fifth in the world, had already defeated France, New Zealand, Australia and world champions South Africa in the past 12 months, with the Pumas tough opponents for a 'scratch' Lions side playing their first match of the tour. But Lions head coach Farrell, seconded to the combined side from his 'day job' as Ireland boss, refused to cite a lack of cohesion as the reason for his side's error-strewn display in front of a sold-out Aviva Stadium. "We made it a tough game," he said. "Congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win the match. I'm sure that's a big moment in Argentinean rugby history. "We had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better to convert them, but the whole story of the game is that we compounded too many errors." The former England international added: "I wouldn't give familiarity as an excuse. We need to be better than that. The Lions are good players coming together. "We won't sugar-coat this. We need to be honest because if we're not honest, how do we gain trust with each other? "Losing hurts, especially in this jersey. We need to find the solutions pretty quickly and be honest with ourselves because some good has to come from this." Farrell, reflecting on what had gone wrong against the Pumas, said: "The amount of balls that we threw blindly either on to the floor or to the opposition was a standout. "The scraps on the floor always seemed to go to Argentina, so there was a bit more fight and hunger from them that we can't accept." Maro Itoje criticised the Lions' lack of precision as the lock's first outing as their captain ended in the tourists' first defeat by Argentina in eight matches. "We gave ourselves numerous opportunities but we weren't accurate enough at times and weren't consistent enough in piling pressure on to Argentina," he said. Friday's reverse was the first time the Lions had lost their opening tour match since 1971. But that 15-11 defeat by Queensland in Brisbane was a prelude to one of the Lions' most celebrated triumphs -- a 2-1 Test series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand.
